Around SBN: Will the Cincinnati Reds Be the Surprise of 2009? Bar-right-arrows

OT: Music Interlude

For some reason, my favorite part of the movie The Wall is this:

Vera Lynn/Bring the Boys Back Home

It always makes me choke up a little bit.

The movie version of The Wall is flawed....brilliant in parts, too over-the-top in others, sometimes way too heavy-handed. When I was in college I thought it was the coolest thing ever, but as I get older I start to see some of the flaws in it and areas where more subtlety would have been useful, which I suppose is actually a flaw with the album itself.

Musically, Dark Side of the Moon is better I think, more universal in approach. There is rather too much rock star self-pity in The Wall.

Wall vs Darkside

I would say there is more range in Darkside. There are many different skills and techniques used which makes it a more interesting album.

But personally, I’d throw em up against the wall anyway.

3. The Wall

Of the Sid Barrett Triology...

....I’d go:
1. Wish You Were Here
2. Dark Side of the Moon
3. The Wall

Though more uneven than these three, “Meddle” and “Animals” are worth a listen for the uninitiated, and merit revisting for the vets. When those two albums are at peak moments, it is with memorable results.

I may have mentioned it before (maybe not) but if you like Floyd, giving a trial to Nektar might be worth your while. Their album “Remember the Future” predates “Dark Side of the Moon” so don’t call it flattery by imitation.

Favorite Floyd Albums

1. Dark Side
2. Obscured by Clouds
3. Meddle
4. Wish You Were Here
5. The Final Cut
6. Piper
7. Animals
8. The Wall

I agree with you about the Wall – the older I get, the less I like it. Something about is very appealing to adolescents.

Also, if they had cut about half the stuff, the Wall would have been much better.

Favorite Pink Floyd

1. Animals
2. Dark Side
3. Wish You Were Here
4. The Wall
5. Meddle

I thought the Gilmour stuff was too soft at times. I like listening to Pulse, but I think the version of Run Like Hell is awful on that album.

Vera Lynn

Like the line in Vera Lynn’s song “When the Lights Go On Again All Over the World” about bringing the boys home from the war:

Pop quiz. One of her songs, We’ll Meet Again, plays at the end of a famous movie. What movie.
