arencibia, lucroy, and canham
let's take a look at these three, plus a personal favorite of mine, and get some discussion going about this all important position. all were 2007 college draftees, with arencibia getting the most love, drafted by toronto at 22. canham i think went around 48, while lucroy went in the low 100s. the offensive performances are as follows:
arencibia:
canham:
and lastly, lucroy:
i'll leave the examinations to the comments section, but i still like lucroy a lot, and i think he might be the best of all. canham's plate discipline is better, but if he can't slug .450 in the cal league, he's not likely a star. arencibia's power is best, but a 0:27 BB:K rate just screams sal fasano.
and finally, to relate personal experience, arencibia was drafted in the first round of my simulation league's entry draft. lucroy was taken in the second. canham went undrafted. i took this guy in the third:
tyler flowers.
it's interesting. i liked my selection then (taking lucroy in the supplemental round of the 2007 mock draft), and i still like my selection now (taking tyler flowers in the third round of the NSBL entry draft).

Why the heck hasn’t Canham been promoted?

Agreed
He’s shown he can handle A+ ball quite handily. Maybe the Padres are taking things slowly because of the death of his brother a couple months ago, but that’s just idle speculation.
Of the three, I think Canham has the best shot to have a career as a starter because of his plate discipline.

Look deeper....
I took Lucroy in the second round of our DMB Draft earlier this month (I am in the same league as the original poster), but I was looking at Canham too. When I looker deeper into his numbers, I didn’t like what I saw. A very high BABIP and a low LD%. That just makes it seem like he has been getting lucky. His on base is nice, but he is showing a lack of power. Could be they want him to work on that more.

Why
is Arencibia’s OBP worse than his AVG in New Hampshire?

Flowers
I like the kid, but hasn’t the knock on him always been that he’s not much of a catcher?

that's an interesting point that i don't think any of us can answer.
i think i’ll try to catch a game of his when he goes to wilmington later in august, but to put his performance into perspective, myrtle beach is the most pitcher friendly park in a pitcher friendly league. not only is he getting on base at a rate that leaves him third overall in the league, but he’s also gotten better as the season has gone along, peaking this month at a .317/.429/.571 clip, again, playing in the most pitcher friendly park in a pitcher friendly league.
what i’ve saId in the past is that there are three outcomes for tyler flowers. A) he becomes a very good hitting 1B. 2) he becomes a very good hitting catcher. and 3) he stalls out in the minors. 3 is always a concern, but i think 1 and 2 are much more likely at this point in time.
one more thing:
the reason that flowers played 1B at all in his professional career was because he had surgery on his knee before his first full season. that’s not a good thing, but if it’s near 100%, BA had decent enough things to say about flowers defense in the 2008 handbook, so it’s not a given that he’s moving off the position.

FWIW, I can confirm that Lucroy is one of the four players on the PTBNL list in the Sabathia trade

Hard to get excited about...
22 year old college kids in A-/A+ ball. Until they rake in AA, I’m not buying.
Arencibia’s K/BB rate is terrifying, but a .844 OPS in 117 AB is a lot to work with. Plus, I just trust the competition SEC guys play against a lot more than what Lucroy and Flowers faced. At least Canham played in a major conference.
If we are talking about 22 year old catchers in A+ ball, my man Carlos Santana should definitely be getting some love! He’s blowing all these other guys out of the water!
