Mike Aviles
Anyone know anything about Aviles? I'm just wondering what his potential is at this point. He's hitting well right now, but obviously scouting reports aren't out on him yet, etc, etc... I know he's older (27), so I'm guessing his ceiling isn't too high.
Also, are the Royals looking for him to be the short stop of the future or is this just a stop gap thing? Is he destined for a util role?

I saw him play
at Concordia. I don’t get Royals games, but at Concordia he was a line drive hitter with good bat speed. He was pretty under-the-radar and I kind of expected him to be a late round pick by the A’s. However he never really got deep in counts and he never had a great feel of the corners of the strike zone.
Aviles doesn’t have the plate discipline to make it as an everyday starter on a contender, however he has enough raw skill to get a lot of time as a utility man for 150-250 PAs annually.

I don't see why he can't be an everyday starter
so far from what I’m hearing is that hes been a pretty good defender. He’ll stick at SS and as long as he can still do what he is doing now he is an all around good player.
Accidentally not thedude925 anymore. I do hate this new name.

The plate discipline
will hold him back - most of the time he’ll hit .280 or .300 but his OBP will be at most around .359, which is around the league average - a rather low ceiling.
He does have very good defensive skills, which is why teams will put him at utility. They don’t need to commit an everyday spot to him and his low OBP, but he’ll be a very good bat off the bench and a very good replacement for an injured player.

Response
Those numbers are not a low statistical ceiling at all for a middle infielder. Teams do not sit players capable of approaching an .800 OPS and playing shortstop.
Frankly, if this guy’s real performance level is anywhere close to the numbers he’s posting, he should be starting for a lot of teams. For a budget-minded team like the Royals, Aviles having a starting slot is a slam dunk.

Aviles
Unless he falls off a cliff, he’ll probably start at short or second next year. I hope it’s short, but the management has a hard on for defense so it might not be.
