Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Freddie Freeman

This guy has been unbelievable.  For the first third of the year or so, he hit around 270 with few homers but lots of doubles so you know that the power was going to come.  However, the two month surge he is in the middle of right now is just ridiculous.  He is now batting .317 (and over .500 in the last two weeks) along with a huge power surge which has seen his home run total rise to 15.  He also has 28 doubles and 4 sbs.  He brings a solid SO/BB ratio of 52/32 along with him, and oh yeah i forgot, the kid is still freakin 18!!!!!!

Freeman

When will be get a promotion to high A? I’d say it has to come within the next few weeks, he is obviously ready.

When he was drafted

I really loved this pick and thought he was one of the more underrated prospects in the draft. He’s got a sweet swing, makes contact, has good plate discipline, and an incredibly projectable body that should add a lot of power. There is absolutely nothing in his stats that is not incredible for an 18 year old in his first full pro season.

Everything

. . .except for that .191 BA against southpaws. It’s his first year so he gets some slack there, plenty of LH batters struggle in early exposure to quality LHPs. But it’s something to keep an eye on.

oh wow

completely missed that one. Fortunately he isn’t striking out at an enormous rate against them (17.6%) so maybe that is a good sign that some of that is just poor luck.

comp

I got to see him in Spring training and he reminds me a lot of Adam LaRoche except that he has a better frame to add power and a smoother swing with less of an uppercut. The swings are still somewhat similar though, both aren’t that fast but are very good defensive firstbasemen and both have great arms with backgrounds as amateur pitchers.

NO!!!!

I love Freeman! Don’t tell me that. Don’t tell my heart. My achey breaky heart. I just don’t think he’ll understand.

(Sorry, couldn’t resist. I never even heard of Freeman before this post lol)

Based off numbers alone

He should be the Braves #1 prospect. Nobody not even Heyward has put up better numbers.

Heyward plays in the outfield and he also has 15 steals and more BB's

Heyward is getting the Pujols treatment while Freeman is Ryan Ludwick.

Wait

Look again just a few more walks, he also has more K’s. A better comp would be Chase Utley and Ryan Howard since both are LH and hit back to back.

So why is Lars a top 25 prospect

and Freddie Freeman a borderline top 100 prospect?

by bravitos5122 on Jul 17, 2008 5:42 PM EDT reply actions

Freeman is going to be far better than a borderline top 100 prospect if this continues.

He’s 3-4 so far! The kid is amazing!
