DVD Trio

A couple years ago, there was a trio of Texas Ranger pitching prospects that got a lot of people excited. Then, all three of them faced their own unique hardships and then question marks began to form if any of the three would ever live up to their potential.

Now, I am not a Rangers fan, but the people who believed in the DVD trio should get some redemption now.

For those that don't remember, the trio was:

Thomas Diamond

Edinson Volquez

John Danks

Diamond is struggling in his return from injury but the other two are dominating their respective leagues at 23/24 years old.

So the good news? Congrats Ranger fans, your org CAN develop pitching prospects into elite major league pitchers!

The bad news? They are putting up elite numbers for other teams...

i think the development, at least of danks, should be credited a bit more to their current teams.

especially considering danks’ domination is at least in part attributable to the development of a cutter, a specialty of white sox pitching coach don cooper, which may not have occurred if danks stayed in the texas system.

And the Twins have the advantage of being a better team than the Sox. - hitlesswonder

Yep -

With Danks, I think it’s quite clear that the Sox have done as much if not more to develop or maximize his natural ability than the Rangers.
The same may be true of Volquez, though I don’t really know what all went on with Volquez in his trip through the minors last year. Still, he’s looked like a different pitcher this year.

Still, I guess the glimmer of hope here is that we can finally say that it may NOT be a failure to recognize quality pitching that plagues Texas, only a failure in player development.

other pitchers

rangers traded away harang for velarde
duchscherer for vizcaino

not saying they would be the same if the remained w/ rangers, but it would be a solid rotation

Danks

was developed quite well in the rangers organization imo. Having followed his career thoroughly as one of if not my favorite prospect at least while he was here. A lot of that is attributable to danks himself, as he made adjustments with the help of his pitching coaches and routinely got better at every stage of his development.

At first he struggled, but after a little while dominated at every class along the way.

I'm sorry my parents never had me sarcamsized.
