Richard
Why is Richard on this team? Doesn’t seem like he’s much of a prospect. They also mentioned he’s probably going to be on the US Olympic team.
Is that really how you pronounce Gamel?
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that. George Carlin

considering the announcer didn't know which of clayton richard's names came first
i’m gonna have to say that no, they are not pronouncing gamel correctly.
and richard is a hell of a pitcher. he’s not sexy, but he does everything necessary to be a successful major league pitcher. he’s of the same mold as kason gabbard (though with fewer BBs allowed) and aaron laffey.

because he's the kind of guy who will produce in international competition.
this isn’t solely for prospects per se this year. the olympics are a more paramount concern. that’s why you also see a guy like d’antonio, too.
clayton isn’t high upside but, by virtue of his football background, he’s probably a bit of a later bloomer. probably a backend of the rotation guy or a LOOOGY – but he’ll be a major leaguer.

Richard.
Why do you not consider him much of a prospect? He is a big lefty with a 2:1 GB:FB ratio, hardly walks anyone, strikes out a decent amount of batters, his fastball reaches the low 90s and he has a plus curve and works quickly. And he is doing all that in AAA. What’s not to like? Should he be like some of these other guys with ERAs over 5 and about 5 walks per 9 but with a 96MPH fastball in High A? He may not be projectable, but give me the guy who is killing AAA hitters over the guy who is struggling in High A or AA any day.

dude
the game is on ESPN 2…we dont need a running account…
how about we comment on who impresses and disappoints?
carrasco was all over the place..and cahill definitely isnt “94 with an unhittable sinker”
he was 89-91, touching 92 with some nice sinking action on the FB, and a slider with nice break but so far out of the zone no majorleaguer would be tempted to swing at
by jsmall404 on Jul 13, 2008 1:26 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Dude, he pitched one inning, some pitchers need at least 2 to get to max velocity. He also
came out of the pen, different warm up regimen.
by theblackpearl on Jul 13, 2008 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would agree
but I really doubt he is around 94 consistently like everyone sounds..the sinker seemed to have more of a Tim Hudson tailing shape rather than the Webb or Halladay sinking action…Just not what I was expecting to see…obviously he is still a great prospect

Teagarden
His aim into second base seemed great. I think it was DeJesus he threw out by putting the ball 6 inches above the ground right between the runner and the bag. Couldn’t ask for a better throw.

Heat
He was effortlessly hitting 99 on the gun consistently. Everyone in the stadium heard the pop in the catchers mitt and stopped what they were doing to watch this kid throw gas. It was pretty damn impressive.

effort?
He fell on his behind throwing a pitch… not sure I’d call that effortless. :->

He slipped
It looked like he lost his footing. I think he banged his left elbow pretty good when he landed too. He kept rubbing it while on the mound and also when walking off after the third out.

Funniest moment I saw
was when Valaika (I think it was him) fouled a ball back off Montero’s mask… and when Montero started to stand up he was pretty wobbly so the ump had to grab him by the chestpad’s back straps to keep him from falling over. Made me giggle.

went
As mentioned, Henry Rodriguez’s heat was pretty impressive, especially when he threw a 100 mph strike while falling down.
On the pitching side, Anderson and Carrasco didn’t impress at all. Cahill looked pretty damn good out there, mixing his pitches well. Inman’s delivery was so funky; a lot of his game his deception and I don’t think it will hold up well in the majors.
On the hitting side, Ivan de Jesus looked strong everytime up, staying balanced and making good contact. LaPorta, despite not doing much, still looked able to kill the ball with any swing.
Watching Villalona get absolutely demolished by Weathers was pretty cool too. 17 year old never had a chance.
I'll warm up with you anytime

carrasco
i didn’t get to watch…. why was carrasco not impressive, he k’d 2 of the three guys he faced… was it stuff or location?

I agree with ufoboy
I am far from a pitching expert or a good judge of stuff, but I got the same impression. I may not be a scout, but when I am watching a great pitcher, it just looks different. Hitters seem more baffled. It’s like you can sense greatness. I didn’t get that vibe from Carrasco.
I did get it from Henry Rodriguez and Cahill though. Both seemed to have hitters second guessing themselves. Weathers too when he wasn’t walking people. That third strike he threw to Villalona to end the inning had him all mixed up.

Dejesus
how was his actions at 2b?
I love Dejesus’ discipline but with his lack of power, I wonder if its going to carry over to the majors when pitchers are just going to challenge him when the worst thing that can happen is a single.
