Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Carlos Triunfel

Has he turned the corner?

Star-divide

Triunfel really showing a lot more to his game this year than in the past...he's got 16 SB's this year in 265 AB's as opposed to his 7 SB's last year in 371 total AB's.

His stats vs. LHP are crazy too: .343 avg, .397 obp, .522 slg, .920 ops

After an awful June, he's been ON FIRE in July: .341 avg, .396 obp, .523 slg, .919 ops

He's really looking like he's turning the corner, with 2 HR and 3 SB in his past 10 games while batting .333

What does everyone think?

I think its more just a fact that triunfel is healthy now. i really dont think he’s made some giant development stride to say he’s turned a corner or anything (other than health wise). the 16sb come with 7cs, which isnt so hot. though it is steady improvement from his putrid 7sb, 12cs mark from last year. and the recent couple homers he hit are nice, but i wouldnt expect him to go on a huge power tear in the second half. i think too many people got hung up on the ZERO homers he hit last year and are now making a big deal that he finally hit a ball over the fence. in my opinion the zero of last year was the abberration, not the fact that he is now starting to hit a few hrs this year, which nearly every player does from time to time.

he was out two different times this year with an abdominal/side strain- an injury that tends to linger, plus he had the disciplinary suspension that sat himout a while. he struggled early on in going through this, not a surprise. now he is getting regular time and seems to be healthy and can get some consistency going.

i think triunfel (full season healthy in the cal league) is likely to do something like .315-7-60, 25sb. which is fine (actually quite fine) for an 18yr old. he’s still one of my favorite prospects. but i dont think anything has significantly changed for his longterm skillset/projection. my comp is and remains a carlos guillen type guy, some speed, some power that he grows into, excellent batting avg, can play SS but is a little stretched there as he grows and likely ends up playing elsewhere as he moves past his early years.

Does his righty/lefty splits concern anyone?

Triunfel this year…
vs LHP: .338/.392/.515 (74 PA)
vs RHP: .218/.271/.282 (214 PA)

Just two comments?

And one of them from somebody who might not know what he’s talking about (me).
