Can't we all get along?
I've been surfing this website for the last few months and have very much enjoyed both John's analysis, as well as the comments made by many members of this community. You guys have helped me gain a much better understanding of the minor leagues, as well as helped improve my minor league system in a keeper league.
However, one thing that I've noticed quite a bit in comments, typically in the fan posts, is people will have disagreements on a certain topic and will soon digress into calling each other names and generally questioning each others intelligence.
My question to everyone is: why can't we have a civil discourse without getting into personal attacks?
If everyone agreed on every topic, this site would be boring. At least I know I would be extremely bored with it. Part of what makes this site so interesting is that people have diverging opinions and are willing to share their thoughts with others.
While I realize that some people tend to overrate prospects and others tend to underrate them, I don't understand why people have to get so nasty with what they're writing.
It seems like whenever a long post is made, other members will find one sentence of the post that they find "stupid" and attack it mercilesly while completely ignoring the origional point of the post.
Is it so hard to respect another person's opinion, even if it runs counter to your own? I think a lot of us forget that we're talking about what MIGHT happen with players and that the TRUE OUTCOME isn't known by anyone, even John, who obviously is very informed and intelligent.
Lets not forget that this is a discussion board about a game, which is supposed to be fun. Discussing prospects should be fun, not something that should turn into a nasty attack on a person's intelligence.
As I said at the start of this post, I think this website is pretty cool and informative and entertaining. And I think that if everyone could take a step back and respect each others opinions, the community as a whole would benefit.
Sorry if this post ran a little long and rambled a bit, but I've been thinking about this for a while and thought it should be said/written.

Good questions
Baseball, and in particular baseball’s statistical and prognosticative analysis, is like a lot of intellectual endeavors (religion, politics, anything else that shouldn’t be talked about on this site) in that its followers tend to be fairly polarized in their opinions. Whereas one may wander into a random tavern and overhear a liberal vs. conservative political debate, users on this site are fairly reserved to their stathead/old school methodologies of analysis and predictions of players. Some players might exhibit tools out the yin-yang whereas the future Jack Custs of the world make statheads drool, or some players might elicit praise from either school of thought for different reasons. Since most of the people on this site ARE very intelligent, and since pride seems to be requisite sin (no scientific evidence to back that up, just noting a perception) for intelligent people, some posters can take a serious offense in having their methodologies questioned, which is normal in any polarizing environment.
Another possible reason for dissent on the site is due to the attempt of nearly everyone here to distinguish him/herself from the lot by picking a deep sleeper prospect as “theirs”, which is fun because if Vechionacci actually does make a name for himself, that crazy Yankee fan will feel like a validated badass because he knew something all along that others may have questioned, but if he fails it’s okay because the odds were stacked against him anyways. I imagine this environment of clashing ideologies with wildly varying aspects on how people attempt to forecast greatness creates a sometimes hostile board, since some people need to disprove or discredit the ideas of others in order to gain validation for themselves.
Since there are hundreds if not thousands of people who visit this site regularly, and since tolerance and/or benevolence isn’t oozing from all of them, minor flare-ups are bound to happen, which, comparing that to the flamewars that once desecrated this site, aren’t that bad. On a related note, I do notice that some people take particular (and quite possibly sadistic) glee in correcting others’ mistakes of information recollection, which may have to do with the fact that past statistics are the only tangible, definitive, and sacred aspects to baseball’s analysis.
Obviously, having a clean envrionment depends on bloggers who also desire that in kind. On that note, I think Matt Bush (yes, THE Matt Bush) is going to surprise some people. :-)
This is the stupidest post ever....
I just had to throw that in there…..sorry.

I know it's a small sample size...
AND it was against rookie league competition AND he also injured his elbow last year but 16Ks in 7.2 IP with a 1.17 ERA immediately after converting from SS to P isn’t bad. It’ll be interesting to see what he can do in a full season. And remember, he’s still young at 22.
That's a nice thought...
However, this is an open forum so there are always going to be instigators or jerks or kids. It doesn’t take long to spot them. And although they certainly detract from many posts, if you can look past them, this site is still a great place for discussing baseball. Though it does seem like the community lost a bunch of smart posters when the format changed.

What ever happened to civility?
The same self-edit button that people have when discussing things in person seems to disappear once you’re on the Internet. There should be something that says, “Stop and think about the needless attack you’re about to inflict on someone with a somewhat different opinion about a game.” I’m sure I’ll be called an idiot, a jerk and worse for agreeing with the original post. I love the work John does. I love most of the insight of the posters. But why do so many things need to descend into stuff that’s juvenile and grotesque?

I also don’t understand the need for name calling. People seem to forget that we are discussing a game. I don’t see how treating the other posters with respect can hurt.
