Controversial Prospects Ideas

This week I want to revisit the concept of controversial prospects, guys who generate different opinions from various observers and analysts. I want to see how these players are doing so far this year. The first guy who comes to mind is Tyler Robertson. Who else should we look at? Make suggestions in this thread please.

Michael Brantley

Consistent .300/.400/<.400 hitter in the minors until this year. One of John’s favorite sleepers, but BA had him at #24 in the system. Has really taken off this year, hitting .342/.421/.429 at Huntsville. Has three HR on the season, all in the past ten games, which exceeds his career total up until that point (2).

He's extremely quick and good.

I should also note

Brantley has cut down his already-low strikeout levels to a ridiculous 13 in 240 ABs.

He's extremely quick and good.

2 young guys

Deolis Guerra

Carlos Triunfel

The Dodgers won't win a playoff series until the Cool-a-Coo returns.

Well

If you’ve even looked at the 09 top prospect thread, Trevor Cahill generates a lot of discussion.

Also, Bumgarner, Julio Borbon.

Bumgarner?

Is there a meaningful contingent of fans who are actually down on Bumgarner?

well..

..I wanted Heyward last summer, and I want him more now.

But as it goes, MB has pitched very well.

Guys

Brandon Wood
Cameron Maybin
Reid Brignac
Colby Rasmus
Buster Posey

Brandon Wood

He’d be interesting to do. Maybin’s a bit rehashed, we just had a diary on Posey and Rasmus seems to be rebounding. Reid Brignac might be interesting too.

Brett Gardner is one

Bourn tanking in Houston can’t help his cause, but Gardner is getting a few more extra base hits this season.

Carlos Gomez despite being in the majors

Upside, Downside of Gomez needs to be discussed.

+1

On this site alone, people have 20 different projections about what type of player he will become.

"I couldn't do that. Could you do that? Why can they do it? Who are those guys?"

Charlie Morton

resurgence for real or will he sink back into old ways?

Resurgence?

He had an ok April, then more of the same.

Elvis Andrus

the next Renteria or the next Arias?

by naropean on Jun 8, 2008 2:34 PM EDT reply actions

Wilkin Ramirez

Toolsy Tigers prospect, always thought to have potential, but never did much and was consistently banged up. Had a nice (healthy) run in AA this year, recently bumped to AAA.

by rdf8585 on Jun 8, 2008 2:47 PM EDT reply actions

Michael Bowden

Lots of talk about a hitch in his wind up, and that he doesn not have dominating stuff, that he is a Jeff Suppan type. Still he had a long stretch where he dominated Lancaster last yearm a terrible place for pitchers, and he is putting together a nice run in Portland, while being one of the youngest guys in AA.

So what is he? Suppan or more of a Mussina?

by Robinson Checo on Jun 8, 2008 3:02 PM EDT reply actions

Hard to call him Mussina

remember, Mussina had a good FB when he first came up. That’s why those Ian Kennedy comparisons were making me cringe.

Bobby Bundy & Freddy Freeman

How good can they be?

Down with Leitch!!!

by Buzz Bissinger on Jun 8, 2008 3:32 PM EDT reply actions

Two Way Players....

Guys like Kyle Drabek, Ethan Martin, etc. Also ambidexterous athletes.

I've got a McPheever, and only JoJo Reyes can help me!

by Buzz Bissinger on Jun 8, 2008 3:43 PM EDT reply actions

excellent

good suggestions….keep them coming. lots of fodder here.

by John Sickels on Jun 8, 2008 3:45 PM EDT reply actions

i like

the brignac idea…. also i’d love to see how you think about the defense discussions… max ramirez, great hitter but what about defense, same with clement and gamel…. im sure there are a bunch of guys who smash but just can’t field that I can’t think of.

controversial Brewers prospects...

in every sense of the word: Salome and Jeffress. Salome has had an unbelievable year behind the plate, and Jeffress has had one terrible outing and a number of great outings since his return.

Curious to see if John thinks these guys are Top 100 guys should they go the rest of the season without drug/PED issues…thanks!

Blake Wood

plus stuff but hasn’t pitched much up until this year, where he’s been fairly dominant.

Schafer, Heyward, Clement, Gio Gonzalez, Eric Hurley, Austin Jackson, Tabata, Ian Kennedy...

All would be interesting to hear about a real indept dissection of their stats and thier scouting reports

by laxtonto on Jun 8, 2008 4:06 PM EDT reply actions

Tabata

Tabata would be a good idea, with his terrible start and attitude problem.s

by supermets on Jun 8, 2008 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Angel Villalona

Surprised he wasn’t mentioned yet.

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.

by Savoy on Jun 8, 2008 4:19 PM EDT reply actions

Felix Doubront

59/7 K/BB in 57 IP with 55 H allowed for Greenville in the Sally League, but according to Sox Prospects, he only tops out at 91 MPH.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jun 8, 2008 4:21 PM EDT reply actions

Danny Valencia

John should have a well-informed opinion on this one. Good track record, hitting .343/.407/.531, but old for his league.

He's extremely quick and good.

Desmond Jennings

Just got back from injuries, tearing it up so far (.607 OBP!)

Just wanna hear some upside and floor talk on him

by Cory Alexander on Jun 8, 2008 6:10 PM EDT reply actions

+1

He sort of was forgotten by folks while he was hurt, and now he’s back and looks like the player he was, except now with Weglarz-esque OBP skills.

by gogotabata on Jun 8, 2008 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow

My initial reaction was “607 OPS? Surely, something must be wrong with Jennings.” Then, I realized it was a 607 OBP. Well, wowie zowie, sir. Wowie zowie, indeed.

Lowrie

...got as much debate as anyone.

by BobbyMac on Jun 8, 2008 6:48 PM EDT reply actions

Allen Craig

most write him off as an organizational player, but last season you made a quick mention about believing in his skills, I’d like to hear more.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

by Dave Barry on Jun 8, 2008 6:53 PM EDT reply actions

A few more

Carlos Rosa of KC, Nick Weglarz in Cleveland…
JAS

by jasvlm on Jun 8, 2008 8:27 PM EDT reply actions

A few names

Jesus Montero, Tyler Clippard, De Los Santos (now injured, what do you expect of him) and Elijah Dukes.

by GuyinNY on Jun 8, 2008 8:38 PM EDT reply actions

Volstad

all those bats he doesn’t miss and all that success he’s had…

Some Cubs that may fit

Eric Patterson – There’s a heavy portion of Cub fanshat are high on him, and then there are many that don’t think he’ll amount to much.

Jeff Samardzija – Some really odd metrics to stuff. I don’t know if he’s controversial in terms of grades, but more controversial in terms of status in some respects.

by toonsterwu on Jun 8, 2008 10:51 PM EDT reply actions

Cahill, Hellickson, Bowden

are the three pitchers I’ve seen the most debate out.

I’m still on the fence about Maybin, but he’s no longer a shiny new toy so maybe everything about him has been written.

The other name is Andrew McCutchen since he’s all of a sudden developed power.

by Galt on Jun 8, 2008 10:54 PM EDT reply actions

re

Mat Gamel is plenty controversial, and his performance dictates some kind of piece regardless.

by 31Boots on Jun 9, 2008 1:38 AM EDT reply actions

OT - prospect smackdown...

sorry, this is off topic –
but a while ago you thought that a good prospect smackdown would be will inman vs. chris volstad.
I agree.
Wholeheartedly.

Neftali Feliz

Looking great in the MWL. Is it real? Or just a velocity mirage, and he winds up as a reliever?

by guru4u on Jun 9, 2008 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

Josh Banks

As of right now, he is the poster child for the “needs a change of scenery” argument. Does venue have a lot to do with his success in San Diego thus far?
