All Prospect Team
Easy enough. Just guys in the minors are eligible, this is the squad I'd want in my organization; I tend to upside and risk over surety.
C: Matt Weiters
1B: Matt LaPorta
2B: Chris Valaika
3B: Pedro Alvarez
SS: Hector Gomez
LF: Jason Heyward
CF: Peter Bourjos
RF: Mike Moustakas
DH: Travis Snider
SP: David Price
SP: Jeremy Hellickson
SP: Jordan Walden
SP: Jake McGee
SP: David Hernandez
CL: Neftali Feliz
Middle infield is a little rough, but I think Valaika could be Michael Young, and I like Gomez's upside. Went ahead and moved Moustakas' arm and athleticism in right so he can just concentrate on mashing. I was half tempted to put McCutchen or Rasmus or Fowler or Gorkys in centerfield, but I really love Bourjos' defense and his baserunning, and when thinking about fielding an actual team, I'm willing to punt some offensive upside for those other qualities. And I wanted to give a nod to his season, and to Valaika and David Hernandez, two other under the radar guys that I'm psyched about.

"If you were a hot dog, would you eat yourself?"
Is it truly that hard
to list their positions?
So,
Brignac, SS
Cahill, SP
Gamel, 3B
Butler, 1B (no longer a prospect)
Rasmus, OF
Maybin, OF
McCutchen, OF
Clement, C
Garcia, CL (tho he’s in the majors)
Villalona, DH
Scherzer, SP
Wood, 2B?
Martinez, which one? Fernando?
W. Davis, SP
ok
C: Jeff Clement (to be different, Wieiters kicks ass too)
1B: Max Ramirez (move him from catcher already)
2B: Matt Antonelli
3B: Mat Gamel
SS: Brandon Wood (I still have some faith)
LF: Carlos Gonzalez
CF: Colby Rasmus
RF: Jason Heyward
DH: Chris Carter (OAK)
SP: David Price
SP: Rick Porcello
SP: Neftali Feliz
SP: Gio Gonzalez (I’m a fan of this kid)
SP: Jake McGee
CL: Max Scherzer (maybe swap him and McGee as a closer?)
I agree with most of these selections...
But I have to ask (an honest question) why are people so intent on Ramirez never learning to play catcher? How much different is he at this point from Victor Martinez at this age, where he was an excellent bat who was bottom tier defensively at catcher but made up for it and eventually developed great aptitude for the position? We always say catchers tend to stagnate offensively, but perhaps the bigger issue is that we are too impatient and move the high offensive potential catchers before they can become the next great hitting catcher with tolerable defense (a la Piazza).

In hindsight...
John writes that he doesn’t have the mobility for 1B, which means it’s C or DH for him. So leaving him at C may be the best move.
As far as moving players goes, it may be to save a player from bad injury or the wear and tear of the position. A player probably has less of a chance of collapsing early if he plays 1B as opposed to catching, and if his bat is really special, moving him would be a great idea. That’s just me.
Just a little ;)
I do like him though, and with a very shallow pool of 2B to deal with, he’s as likely as anyone else. I guess if you shift Andy LaRoche to 2B, I’d take him…

by bartonboi on Jun 8, 2008 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions
tex hurt
the teixeira trade was highway robbery, but it’s amazing to look at how many top rangers prospects/youth in the majors are former braves…..
salty, max ramirez, andrus, harrison, neftali feliz….
still….i think the “sure things” rates would be rated higher for the braves as the giants have a ton of guys with huge upsides, but a lot of huge questions still, too….not hard to come up with a long list of stud low-class talents that never blossomed….
C – Matt Wieters
1B – Angel Villalona

Er
Kasey Kiker was the fifth-best SP you found in the minor leagues? Look harder.
He's extremely quick and good.
Personally
C Wieters
1B LaPorta (I wanted to list Smoak, I really did, but LaPorta is more proven)
2B Antonelli (Holy crap, the minors are short on great 2b prospects)

OF Snider
DH Davis
P Price
P Kershaw
P McGee
P Porcello
P Cahill
P Danny Rey Herrera, bitches.
Cardenas love?
Why doesn’t anyone give 2b Adrian Cardenas (PHI) any love? 20 years old in A+ hitting:
.333/.403/.518/.921, with a 6-0 SB/CS ratio, and a 17-21 BB/SO ratio? That’s a lotta talent. He hit well the last two years as well, so it doesn’t look flukey.
cardenas
i like him…..he’s solid….i personally like valaika as well, but you can’t go wrong with cardenas

Overlooked guys?
Chase Headley (LF/3B, Padres)
Ben Revere (CF, Twins)
Michael Bowden (SP, Red Sox)
Daryl Thompson (SP, Reds)
Last time I checked these four guys were highly regarded prospects that have been doing very well so far this year. Including them might add a little variety to these lists…
Please check out my blog at http://thefulldeck.blogspot.com/ , now redesigned and recommited!
I don't think Revere is close to this list yet
And I don’t know if the others should be on it, but you’re right that they should be considered more
Revere
I love him, too, but he’s a singles hitter right now. He’s not a top-tier prospect.
"That ain't no etch-a-sketch. This is one doodle that can't be un-did, homeskillet."
What about Eric Young as a 2B prospect?
He was great last year and has put up good numbers this year in AA.
