Around SBN: Fighters React to Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

OT: tim mccarver, i love to hate you

as a graphic came up mid-game to show the stats of zambrano and lowe, mccarver said "both pitchers throwing first pitch strikes for the most part."

zambrano = 9 fps to 20 batters

lowe = 11 fps to 23 batters

this guy's been making me nuts since i first noticed him as a bad, saying something stupid announcer back in the 1990 WS.

and now as i post this, i see the second blown call at 1st base by an ump in this series.  this one leads to an extra run on the martin hr.

re: umpiring

Has it been worse this year, or is it just that it’s getting more attention? Seems like I hear about bad calls more frequently this year than years past – just not sure if that’s just me, or if maybe it’s a question of publicity. Thoughts?

Probably a bit of both

I am just shocked that baseball still hasn’t instituted any replay system. How does it make any sense for the fan at home to be more equipped than the crew on the field to make the correct call?

oooohhhh

Wait, I know this one … it would slow down the game?! Or how about human error is part of the game?!? I dunno, one of those seem to be good enough for most people.

At Least...

use it on disputed home run calls. There seems to have been a lot of those lately.

Why don't people complain about football being slowed down?

Especially when you consider that baseball actually has more moments of action than a football game, and they are typically shorter.

McCarver

I didn’t really have an opinion about the guy until the Giants were in the ‘02 playoffs (which I’m now finally able to talk about). He started to bug me so much that I’d mute the TV, and just listen to the Giants broadcasting team on the radio. Problem was, the cable was 3-4 seconds behind the radio, so Jon Miller would call a “Fastball for a strike”, and then we’d see the windup start.

I tried to like the guy. He came up at 17, played 21 years and on the way caught Bob Gibson. There’s a world of baseball knowledge inside his head. He just does a REALLY crappy job talking about it on TV.

Other announcers who bug me: Thom Brennaman, Steve Lyons, and the Fox studio people during the regular season who are completely worthless (I like Byrnes when he’s around though).

The worst

This guy is the worst broadcaster ever. Not only is he wrong most of the time, he spouts tired cliches a la Joe Morgan with a voice that is worse than fingernails on a chalk board. Since Fox does all the big games these days, he has sucked most of the enjoyment out of the All-Star game and postseason.
