Love Phils First Two Picks
I think the Phils were kinda shocked and pleasantly surprised that they were able to get both Hewitt and Collier with their first two picks, Hewitt in the first and Collier with their supplemental pick. I think they would have been thrilled to get either one, but they somehow lucked out and got both, who they targeted early (Hewitt was tried out at Citizens Bank Park and tried at third and looked very good and comfortable there, and he also smashed several balls into the seats! Both have five tool ability with very high ceilings, although both are probably at least 3 years away from the majors. They also picked up little strong armed HS lefty Andrew Gose with their third pick, and he brings it up to 97 MPH------but needs to improve his secondary pitches------he also plays CF and has outstanding speed but needs more bat to succeed there. All in all, so far I think its a great draft for the Phils-------their scouts and management are VERY excited with their early haul in this draft.

Phils draft
Hewitt, more than any other highly ranked player in this draft has a bit of a reputation for looking like Tarzan in batting practice, but playing like Jane against real competition. In one wood-bat tourney against the better High School prospects in this draft Hewitt was like 0 for the Century. According to some people who follow the draft, like Keith Law, Hewitt could take 6 years to even get a crack at the majors and he would not be surprised by it. As a High School player he has the advantage that 6 years will only make him like 24, but he is as risky as any pick early in this draft this year. That being said I am intrigued by Collier’s bat and wanted the Mets to take him at #33

I heard that too...
while watching the draft. Of all the kids in the first round, Hewitt was the only one they really had nothing too positive to talk about. They may have been negative about some picks (Seattle’s), but they were at least positive about the players taken. But the way they were talking about Hewitt, I would have to put him at the top of the list for “First Round Flops in 2008” contenders.

Time will tell...
but I also like the Phillies draft. Hewitt, Collier and Gose with their top three picks. I think they did excellent.

Hewitt
might take 6 years. But if it takes him that long to figure out how to use his tools, fine. If he does figure it out, look-out. You’ve got an absolute super-star. Toolsiest player in the draft.

Zach Collier
How does someone with a swing that pretty not go in the first 30 picks?
