Draft Thread

Havent seen one so I thought this would be a great time to start one.  Seen Beckham, Alvarez, Hosmer, Matsuz, Posey and now Skipworth be selected.  I have to say that Im a little surprised by the Skipworth pick.... Things arent going so well for my Mets thus far.  I was praying that Hosmer would fall...

Not sure what else to make of the first round so far.  If the first few picks are any indicator of the rest of the first round, then teams are going by their BPA theories...

Skipworth

I just don’t like catchers this early.

especially Posey at the asking price,
but Skipworth seems like he could easily outgrow the position,
and i think it’d be harder to make huge progress while still growing.

Its

either Smoak or Wallace. I dont know why but I think that Wallace could be in play here

I was

clearly wrong… Beckham to the White Sox

by tbach81 on Jun 5, 2008 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

absolutely

Smoak is the better player on most people’s boards, so if they wanted a first baseman why not pick him.

Gordon Beckham or Aaron Crow made alot more sense.

by JP_Frost on Jun 5, 2008 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because...

...yonder controls the strikezone better, has a great swing and hands and real good power. He’s the better player.

:(

I really hate the Alonso choice. I figured Gordon Beckham would go here. Votto’s becoming entrenched. However, this certainly does seem to show a continued willingness to have a crappy defensive LF, as Alonso would likely be moved off.

I’d expect the White Sox to jump on Beckham, though Smoak wasn’t supposed to be here…

by GuyinNY on Jun 5, 2008 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Uhh

Ever consider that Votto will go into the OF? I think he’d make a fine replacement for LF once Dunn is gone.

I'm no commie, but the Reds shall be the best again!

Smoak

I REALLY wanted him to get to Oakland. I would have been so freaking happy. One pick from Smoak and ending up with Weeks is like a kick in the groin. (Not a Weeks fan personally.)

Hi TBach!

What do people think of the Posey pick by the Giants? I wanted Smoak, but am willing to be convinced otherwise. All I can figure is that they don’t think Villalona can play elsewhere but will play in the majors, or at least as likely as Smoak.

Posey

was the best player available, so it’s a great pick for them. I don’t think Villalona had anything top do with it.

by JP_Frost on Jun 5, 2008 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hey Obsessive

Im not sure what to make of the Posey pick. I cant believe that the Giants would be willing to shell out that much money on Posey…

WHAT – CASTRO TO HOUSTON???? DAMN!

Okay back to the Posey pick. For the Giants I think its a good organizational pick. They are thin on position prospects and needed somone to build around. And infield that could potentially be anchored around Big V and now Posey could be quite intriguing in a few years… Personally I dont like the pick for the Giants, but thats why Im an accountant and not a GM lol.

by tbach81 on Jun 5, 2008 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I calmed down

It actually makes a lot of sense to me now, I like Posey over Smoak a lot now, both situationally relative to Giants needs and just on a one-to-one basis. Afterall, Posey was rated by many to be good enough to be the #1 pick overall..

And I realized that he’s the classic Sabean pick, athletic, plays great defense, can hit, can play multiple positions, particularly SS which is another area of organizational need, plus he could move to CF at some point as well, a la Craig Biggio.

Yeah, they’ve never really had a problem paying for what they feel is talent, not just free agents but for amateurs, their bonuses have been pretty much in line with what other teams were paying the picks around their pick. People look at the Tucker move and just assume that they are penny-pinching, but they gave Lincecum and Bumgarner $200K more than what the slot was, and based on what the picks before and after got relative to what they got. Most teams can’t be pushed off slot.

And they appeared to prepare for the possibility of needing to spend extra money for the draft by not spending their entire player payroll target amount, they saved up $7M to spend on the draft it appears. Apparently they were saving the money in case Alvarez fell to them, and according to reports, they had Posey as highly rated as Alvarez, and thus were willing to spend accordingly.

We will see if they are able to sign him though, but given his enthusiastic response to being picked, unlike Bumgarner’s measured response last season, I would have to assume that he’s going to sign as long he get’s something on the high end of bonuses, maybe not the $6-12M I’ve seen bandied about, but probably in the $5-6M range.

Is gonna drop to Baltimore in the second round.

I doubt

that he would make it past the Mets… We clearly need a 1B of the future and Smoak would be a nice acquisition for Omar. Of course Omar is Omar and could draft Fields or Cashner or another relief pitcher lol

Total reach here, and a transparent grab at saving cash.

THEY HAVE Towles!!!!!!! Sure, he’s no great shakes, but he’s certainly adequate. Terrible pick here, unless the Astros know something we don’t. This is one team that didn’t have to scrimp on their pick.

shocked that they did not take Wallace. I would have thought that Wallace would have been a natural here. I also wanted Weeks to slip to the Mets. So far Im 0 for 3 on guys that I wanted to fall, even though two were never going to realistically fall that far.

A great pick for the Dodgers here. I’d have to start Martin at 3b, as it’s easier for a player to convert back into a pitcher. I was really, REALLY hoping the Mets would get this guy. Another great pick for the Dodgers.

Guy

Who are we looking at with #18. Im a Mets fan too. Im hoping Lawrie falls to us… If not Id really like to see Omar take a gamble on someone like Hunt or Scheppers. Worst case scenario Id like to see Havens and the best pitcher available…. What do you think?

by tbach81 on Jun 5, 2008 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No.18

Well, Lawrie’s off the board and I was never really enthused about him to be honest. I’d love to see Shooter Hunt still on the board. With Martin and Weeks off the board, I think Melville might also get some serious consideration.

Of course, it’s Omar who’s drafting, so it’ll probably be Perry.

by GuyinNY on Jun 5, 2008 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

lol

Id be tickeled pick if we got Melville and then wrapped back at 22 and got Hunt. Thats probably not realistic but I can hope?

And if we do go the way of reliever, Id prefer Fields but thats just me

We're up

If we could manage to get Melville AND Hunt, I’d be ecstatic. Add in Anthony Hewitt in the supplemental, and I’d be a very happy Mets fan.

The truth is that any reliever would be one too many for me.

by OldProspects on Jun 5, 2008 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe late

Melville wants top 10 money but since he isn’t really a top 10 prospect it is likely he is off to college.

That

would be a great draft. I agree if we got Melville and Hunt, then we’d have hit the lotto. Think they pop Melville here? I really want them too…

My head says we’ll take Havens here… even though my heart is with Melville

Would you have Hewitt play 2B? Thats where Id try him out to begin his career…. And yes a reliever would be a wasted pick right now

by tbach81 on Jun 5, 2008 3:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Not a bad pick

But I think we would have been better off taken a pitcher here and then focusing on bats with our next two picks

Cooper

Can someone give me some info on this Cooper kid the Jays took? Seems like he wasn’t on a lot of the mock drafts, was this a huge overdraft by JP? Maybe out of desperation due to all the big bats going ahead of him?

by bunner on Jun 5, 2008 3:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

NY Mets

With the 18th selection in the 2008 Amateur Draft, the New York Mets select 1B Ike Davis…

Well, I don’t hate this pick. I’m pretty lukewarm on this one. He’ll be up early quickly, I think. Honestly, I was really hoping to see the Mets go with Shooter Hunt here.

Yeah, I’d start Hewitt at 2B, and I’d give him every chance to stay there unless it appeared it was effecting(affecting?) his bat.

Who do you think we take at 22?

by GuyinNY on Jun 5, 2008 3:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

At 22

I think we look at Havens. Ive seen a few articles saying that theres a link between the Mets and Havens. Ive wanted the Mets to take him since we did our Mock….

I dont think this last pick was all that bad, but I think we would have helped our big league squad out more by picking an arm at 18.

Cubbies

Take Cashner.

I’ll tell you why the Reds took Yonder Alonso…because they are smart! I predict he wins a batting title or three. Remember you heard it here first okay? i’d assume the plan there is Votto to play LF/RF. He runs better than Alonso and has some experience there.

Smoak to Rangers is a find though.

Hope mariners take Freidrich!

Mariners...

Mariners, Mariners

I hate to be histerical here but, they truly are a laughing stock now.

A team with tons of holes basically punts the chance to draft a future star and takes Josh Fields. Nice little reliver who heaves his fastball towards the middle of the plate.

Uh guys, you aren’t a reliever or two away from being a contender okay.

In my mind this is an extremely “safe”, and therefore a very bad choice.

by casejud on Jun 5, 2008 4:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Meanwhile...

The Tigers go with Perry. A contender in need of a reliever. KG reports this means the Mets are now looking for somebody else. Come on, Shooter Hunt…

by GuyinNY on Jun 5, 2008 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The M's

As a fellow M’s fan, I agree it’s hard to stomach the Fields pick—especially considering how the team has pulled relievers out of their ass for years. The M’s are the most risk-averse team in baseball, and it shows here. They will never be a good team until this philosophy has changed.

NY Metropolitans

Havens! TBach, you got your guy.

I’m alright with this pick. Assuming Havens can find a home away from SS, I think his bat will play. I was really hoping for Hunt or Melville, but this is certainly acceptable.

Great Draft

Assuming they sign all their picks, fans of the Royals will have good reason to have high hopes.

Definately

another great draft for Drayton…. Perhaps he can come to New York and teach Omar a thing or two about the draft. And for all the Talk that Omar had about changing his perspective on who and how to draft, it seems as if the Mets have reverted back to their old ways, ie, drafting cheap college players instead of investing in talented HS players.

Totally frustrating to be a Mets fan right now

Mets

And yet some of those cheap college players received lots of praise from the ESPN2 crew and John Sickels (he had Satin as a 6th Round pick in his shadow draft for the Twins). At this point it is impossible to tell who will succeed. Many of the HS players talked about were not even drafted on Day 1 by ANY TEAM
