Is he just getting unlucky? Harsh growing pains? Everything to do with the Pacific Coast League? Hardly the prospect his Southern League numbers suggested he was going to be. He'll have a good start now and then, but is there any hope he can right the ship for good?

His numbers are a bit skewed by two scary-bad outings
He gave up 7 runs in his last start and 10 two starts before that. That’s 17 ER in 8 2/3 IP. His ERA without those two starts is 3.96.
Based on these two fluke (I’m guessing) performances, I wouldn’t be worried. I do wonder if he’s healthy though. For a good pitcher to be that awful in 2 of 3 starts could be a sign of something bothering him.

Forget the ERA/RA thing though
the spike in his hit rate seems more alarming. Gio’s always going to give up some home runs, but he’s always had far more innings pitched than hits. This year, well, 69 in 58 2/3IP.
Sure, he’s been unlucky on balls in play, but coupled with the increase in walks, I wonder if more patient hitters aren’t just waiting for mistakes.
He’s still a great talent; he looked good in the outing I saw, but that was rain-shortened and he didn’t have to face the same hitters twice, etc.
Hes going to be the type
That repeats a level twice before he gets it. He’ll spend all season taking his brusies in AAA this year and repeat it next year and flat out dominate. Then the following year when hes in the majors he’ll end up struggling mightily and put up solid #’s the next year when hes 24-25years old. Thats just how I see it playing out.
Because the past always predicts the future...
Me, I’m worried about his arm. One terrible start is OK, but two is not.
I have to say, if he ends up going under the knife, the Swisher trade could turn out to be one of the all time lemon sales.

It's not as though Swisher has been tearing it up though

He’s been terrifically unlucky this year.

if Gio goes under the knife
nobody will take a pitcher from kenny williams ever again
ps. of course I don’t wish any such thing, I wish the best to Gio

Doesn't always but its a good indicator...
I’m not saying thats how it will be, thats just my personal opinion how it will work out. Maybe because I deal with investments and analyze market conditions that I put too much emphasis on naked numbers and not the overall result of his outtings. I just see him taking more time to get adjusted to new surroundings before everything starts to click for him. He looked damn good in spring training. Maybe he feels he should have made the big league club and is pressing, but whatever he’s doing isn’t garnering the optimal results.

Given that blindfolded monkeys can pick stocks as well as most analysts,
this doesn’t exactly fill me with a great deal of confidence.
(Not slamming you personally, just pointing out that this stuff is not as easy as it looks.)

Gio
I find it odd that Gio has already been dealt 3 times in his short career. Perhaps teams know something we do not.

that might be true, except...
the sox traded him away, and then traded back for him. if the sox knew something bad, why trade back? especially when that is an indirect way of saying “we fu&%ed up”. they only traded him away again becuase the sox had, and still do, have big holes in their OF. i guarantee if the sox could undo the deal for swicher, they would do so in a heartbeat
ehhh

the answer is no
ps. and I was one of the people that didn’t like the deal

why not
what has swisher done that is so special? gio may be struggling some, but he has far more upside

the only thing that explains why
you think either of those two links explains actually explains why the sox would not want to reverse the trade is that you obviously have some sort of mancrush on him. imo, swisher could have an average mlb season, and it would qualify as a career year for him. face it, the only thing that even remotely stands out about any of his stats is the HR category, and that is a fastasy stat. who cares if you hit 30 hr when youre career high BA is. his OBP is average at best, and his SLG has always left A LOT to be desired. he strikes out a ridiculous amount of time. if it were not for the hr, that he has shown over the past two seasons, this guy would be on the bench, and if he does not wake up soon, he will be anyways. but for that one article to say that soon he will start playing to his ability… that isnt saying much. ya, i guess i can see why a major league team would want an overhyped, average at best OF over a young lefty pitcher, pitching above his age, that has been in the top 3 in strikeouts the last two seasons. he has struggles some this year, and yet is still missing a lot of bats. once he settles down, he will be just fine. all swisher is succeeding at is taking up space in the OF

What is it with the Rangers and Swisher?
Is he your version of Derek Jeter or something?
I mean, this is possibly the worst assessment of Swisher I’ve ever seen. Do you even know what a league-average OBP is? Here’s a hint: it’s a lot lower than .357.
You appear to have confused Swisher with Jack Cust.

I don't think the WhiteSox would
Gio is sucking, De Los Santos is having Tommy John, and Sweeney is (temporarly) injured.
Then again, Sweeney alone is somehow doing better than Swisher.
