2005 Hypothetical New York Yankees

This following roster for the 2005 New York Yankees assumes what the roster could've looked like if no players departed via free agency or trades.  In order to qualify, players must have originally signed with New York as an international signing or through the amateur draft.

Please note that this post is meant to generate discussion on each teams' ability to develop and/or sign homegrown talent.  This team is fictional, and details like its economic feasability should be ignored.

I don’t know about being an awful team…in comparing this hypothetical team with the respective hypothetical franchises of San Fran or even Minnesota (which I think was still decent) I’d say it turned out pretty well. A poster requested seeing NY/Boston franchises posted probably so one could see how vastly different the top two-payrolled teams appear due to their aggressiveness in free agency and ability to turn trades with small market teams to their favor because of their seemingly unlimited resources.

On an unrelated note

I’m in favor of a salary cap system. Of course, if I were the commish of MLB this would lead to a work stoppage, and that’s why I’m not commissioner. With revenue sharing the joke that it is (how can Florida’s Loria get more in revenue sharing donations than what he pays his players?!) I would love to see how big market franchises would be forced to pinch pennies and historically frugal (Florida, Pittsburgh, etc.) teams being forced to spend more.

yeah

I’d love to see a minimum amount of spending required. At least 30 mil or so.
So if your payroll was 20 mil, like the Marlins, you’d be forced to dish out 500k bonuses to all your players for a year or, for every mil you’d be under the minimum spending, you would have to donate 1.5 of that to a charity or something
I’m sure the players would be OK with that.

That pitching

is absolutely horrendous. The lineup is great though.

No Wily Mo Pena?

His Met contract was voided, so he broke into baseball with the Yankees.

Wily Mo

I was thinking of him as a possibility – I should’ve included his name on the list of excluded players due to the logjam of backup outfielders

Braves.

Hey man, this is a great series and I’m looking forward to all future installments. As a Braves fan, I’d love to see what we would have looked like had we followed the rules of this experiment. We’re pretty active in free agency (letting people go) and trades (dishing prospects for rentals) so we should be an interesting bunch. Either way, thanks for the distraction!

Not bad

Looking back at it now makes the rotation look worse than it would have at the time. But the top three are all fine, if unspectacular. Milton’s first awful year was 2005, so going into the year I doubt many people would expect a 6+ ERA… and he likely wouldn’t have put that up in Yankee Stadium like he did in GAB. And if he did suck I could see him moving to the bully with Wang moving into the rotation like he did in 2005.

I don’t think Soriano would be hitting 3rd though. Torre had a weird man-crush on Bernie Williams, I think they would have run it Soriano-Jeter- Williams…. or Soriano-Jeter-Johnson-Lowell-Matsui-Williams-Posada-Everett-Cano. 2005 was Lowell’s bad year in real life, but going into the season he had just hit almost 60HR combined the previous two years with an OBP around 360. I would move Johnson to the 3-hole because of his OBP, and then bat Lowell between he and Matsui to break up the LH batters.

Anyways, you are putting in some effort and a lot of us are enjoying these. Keep them coming. I was the one who mentioned the Yanks and Red Sox because of what you said. They are so active in free agency and pre-2005 were trading a lot of prospects for other talent. Nice to see where they would have been without all those moves. I also agree with ejruiz, the Braves would be an interesting one when you get around to them. They are known to be a good drafting team and are pretty solid in the international signings too.
