Prospects Statline 6/26

Brett Anderson

Debut in Midland - 6IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 12 K's (two runs=solo shots)

Aaron Cunningham

Playing LF - 3/4, 2B, 1 R

David Hernandez

6.1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 9 K's

Matt LaPorta

2/4, 2 2B, 1 BB, 2 RBIs

Alcides Escobar

3/6, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 R, 3 RBIs

Travis Snider

Same statline as Escobar (minus the double)

David Price

6 IP, 4 H, 2ER, 4 BB, 7 K's

I've been real impressed with the Midland debuts (Anderson and Cahill), but I also realize it's just one game for both.  That said, it's hard not to like what Brett did today.

Who else are you guys looking at tonite?

Josh Vitters

I’m kinda associated with not liking the kid on here (for asking a simple question about him really) so I figured I had to go see him since he is in town…Boise at Everett in the NWL. I live in Bothell, which is near Seattle, which is near Everett, which is where Tim Lincecums Dad works (hes from Issaqua I believe) and Travis Snider is from here as well.

Anyways, Vitters hasn’t been half bad. Tonight he had an RBI single that was hit hard and a SAC fly. On Tueday he hacked away and got himself out until he hit a screeming triple to CF. He’s hit in all 5 games of the series (in NWL they play 6-game series) and hasd shown a good ability to put bat on ball but little command of the zone. At least he’s starting to actually DO something! I’m sure Cubbies fans will be happy to see that. maybe someday he’ll make the big leageus and make me look dumb for suggesting otherwise but…i doubt it. Good luck kid! He’s hitting .341 51 Ab’s into the NWL season… 102 pro ab’s and he’s still looking for him first pro homer and has 26 K’s though. I’m sure he’ll get one soon though.

Some “kid” maned Ryan Church went 3-3 for the Brooklyn Cyclones in the New york Penn league.

Response

Vitters kind of had some bad luck there to start out with . . .I’m not sold on him yet by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s good just to see him out there getting some ABs and producing. He’s age appropriate for short-season ball even if the pedigree would make you think otherwise, and really this is his first chance to really settle down and start focusing on turning his talent into pro performance.

Note that the much-heralded Mike Moustakas is sitting at a .688 OPS in the Midwest League right now, to give an idea of what kind of adjustment even very talented teenagers are facing in the transition to pro ball.

No doubt, its true.

I agree it’s good to see and obviously Vitters has some talent. Moustakas has had to deal with playing a position that may be a struggle for him as well. I imagine the first taste of pro-ball is also the bigggest leap, level-wise, professionally except the one from AAA to the Show as well.
