DMB Draft

Just thought I would throw this out there, maybe get some good conversation going. We are in the middle of our annual DMB Draft in my league. We are currently in the middle of the 2nd of three rounds. We've discussed expanding the draft with additional rounds, but we decided we liked it at 3 Rounds. Keeps the talent fresh and exciting because there are solid names out there every year.

30 team league with 25 man active and 25 man reserve rosters.

Eligible players include: Anyone in college or the minor leagues that is not currently on a roster, foreign players in the minors who are not in their first season in the states (for example, Villalona and Triunfel were not eligible last year, but have both been drafted this year), major leaguers who have never been on a roster before.

Older prospects many times don't get drafted because we also created a rule that states that any player 26+ years old with either 5 or more years in the minors or 2 or more in the majors are free agents.

Also, we do have Supplemental picks for teams who lose top free agents in the offseason. Teams are also allowed to trade their picks, with the only rule being that they need to keep at least one pick per year (and I think we have a max of like 7 picks per year too).

I have not drafted yet. I had pick 1.19 but traded it for picks 2.14 and 3.14. I am trying to rebuild my reserve roster after trading many of them off looking to win the past couple years. Here is what has transpired so far. Still a lot of names out there too. So far the drafts I like most are the ones by the Dodgers, Orioles, Phillies, and Astros (I planned on taking Zimmermann). Not a big fan of the Diamondbacks or Pirates drafts (both teams are in last place in their divisions and could use more immediate help).

In simplest terms

This draft seriously makes me scratch my head and wonder about the owners knowledge.

LOL

I’ve actually done that too. There are still a lot of nice players to be had, but I won’t mention them by name here because I still have four picks coming up and I know other GMs in the league read this board.

Some teams have gone for immediate help (Lannan, Schafer, DeWitt) while others have gone for upside and possible help in the future (Strasburg, TIm Beckham, Chacin, etc). I personally go for players closer to the majors. I have never drafted a high schooler in our league when there are plenty of kids in the minors with almost as much upside that are a lot closer to the majors. The Baltimore GM (A friend of mine) was able to draft Yunel Escobar and Geo Soto last year 49th and 82nd overall (respectively). That was after Wieters and Moustakas went in the 1st round. I can appreciate the upside of Wieters and Mouse, but when there is already a SS in the majors hitting 300+ available I would take him every time. Same with a catcher killing AAA pitching.

I also think a few teams may be emphasizing college pitchers who are dominating in Lo-A. The way I see it, a college pitcher should be dominating them. Unless they are a very special talent (I drafted Verlander and Lincecum in previous years) I usually want to see what these guys do against pro competition.

Villalona slipping as far as he did surprised me. I have a 1B for several years to come, so I saw no reason to draft him when I did have a pick at 1.19. I wanted Posey with my pick, but he didn’t last (found out I wouldn’t have gotten him anyways, a couple other teams picking before me had him targeted).

I was surprised to see Strasburg go as high as he did. Until last year, no current college player had ever been drafted in our league. Then Pedro Alvarez was drafted, and the last pick in the draft was Justin Smoak. Teams in this league really are preparing more for the draft than they have in past years. Some of those drafts were pretty whacky (trust me, I passed up Felix Hernandez in 2004 to take Jason Stokes. HUGE MISTAKE! But I thought F-Her would drop to my next pick.)

Has Davis or Smaok been picked?

They almost certainly have to be right?

Yeah

Smoak went 104th overall last year (3rd from the last pick in the draft) and Davis went 87th.

I agree.

This is the first season the Giants GM has been in our league, and he inherited a stinker of a club, but he has drafted very well this year. One of the better drafts this year so far with a catcher, a 3B, and two good young SPs.

i'm closer than you think

this year, my (AZ’s) starting pitching has failed me, but next year, my pitching is golden. i’ve got marcum, wandy rodriguez, and nick blackburn solidly in my rotation. gavin floyd and edwin jackson are poised to join them in 2009.

i’m also currently monitoring the rehab of jason schmidt, rick vandenhurk, and scott elbert, all of whom should be bolstering my rotation in 2010-2012, though schmidt is more likely to do so through his absence.

don’t forget about radhames liz and justin masterson, as well. ricky romero, john vanbenschoten, and rob tejeda you could probably forget about. definately those first two, but tejeda’s got a shot to stick if he’s ever given a role and left there to perform.

i need an ace or two, but i’ve also got the pieces to go out and get one, and i;ve got the inclination to do that as well.

i think my policy of drafting has served me well, and my instincts are honed enough that when i see a guy i like, i go after him with everything necessary to get him.
