Cahill to AA Midland

Tonight, Trevor Cahill made his first start in AA for the Midland Rockhounds. I didn't see it live but his performance was rather impressive when i saw the box score and since no one has said anything about it here yet, i figured i would. 6 IP, 2 Hits, 1 ER, 3 BB, and 6 K. I have loved this kid from the minute he put on an A's jersey and i feel like if he continues this type of pace in AA as a 20 year old he is automatically a top 3 pitching prospect. What do you guys think?

Sure

I had this argument on here recently that he shouldn’t be considered a better pitcing prospect than the Marlin’s Ryan Tucker because Tucker was getting it done at AA and has a great arm and is young as well. Now that Tucker is looking good in the big leagues I think I was right at least that he was being overlooked. Cahill, has gotten ALL the talk this year and rightly so i guess. Now that he’s at AA, yes, if he continues to put up a 1.50 ERA (6IP, 1ER) I would say he would be a top 3 prospect. Of course Ryan Tucker did it for 12 starts. Shoot, I don’t know why i keep comparing them…they are BOTH great.

new way of looking at a pitcher's boxscore

Yes the line of innings, hits, runs, walks, and K are all important, but a major thing people don’t look at is the groundouts to flyouts.

Cahill had 11 groundouts and only 1 flyout (83 GB%) which is just absurd and shows you just how effective his sinker in. Not many prospects in recent history can strike out a batter per 9 while having a 60% GB percentage. This is what makes Cahill so absolutely intriguing.

concerned w/ velocity...

why is the anti-cahill group so concerned with this…everything ive read says at time he hits 93/94mph, but mosly in that 88-92mph range w/ sinking action. he can stil fill out so maybe there’s a chance he adds some mph. he was a part time player out of HS, so he may have a fresher arm. i think he has top of the rotation upside, but we’ll see. A’s have pretty good depth in pitchers, so even if cahill just becomes a solid #3, there will be others on the way. hopefully they get lucky w/ 2 or 3 out of this list. if more end up being good its more depth to maybe trade in future deals

I love Anderson..

hes gonna be top 50 in a year.

When will then be now? Soon.

Anderson is already top 50

I think once Price graduates he’ll be the top lefty prospect out there…yes over McGee.

I worry about him...

I mean, I won’t argue that he will be one of the top LHP prospects going into 2009, and I absolutely love his numbers. Great K/9, BB/9, GB%, H/9 and HR/9. But why is his ERA so high? Those peripherals would make you think that he should have a low 3s ERA. I’m not sure, but it seems like he is susceptible to the big inning. Like when he gives up a couple hits or walks, he can’t get out of the inning with only giving up one run. Teams score multiple runs on him. I’m not sure, but that would be my hypothesis. Those types of pitchers worry me because it shows a lack of mental make-up. Like he may get down on himself? Has anyone seen him pitch live when he has gotten blown up? Can they comment on how he looks out there when he gets in a jam?

It's because of one bad game really

He was trying to pitch through a thumb injury in that game (placed on DL immediately following that game). Hence, the skewed ERA.

"We were s--, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."

A lovely 216.00 ERA in that game

Surprisingly, it turns out that an inability to grip a baseball tends to turn your fastballs into changeups. It also turns out that throwing 100% changeups is not a good pitching strategy.

Tell me about it

I was sure I had a career as a major league pitcher until somebody explained that to me.
