Futures Game: Team USA Roster?

Baseball America is reporting that the Team USA roster will play in the Futures Game, as opposed to the traditional roster of the top American players in the minor leagues.  Does that mean we'll be seeing foreign minor leaguers play the best American college players?  If so, I'm extremely disappointed.  I've got decent seats to the game, and I was really excited to see some of the top American minor leaguers.

Am I reading this wrong?

Anyone else going to the game?

I'm Pretty Sure...

That these will be pro players. It says the players will be from the pool of players being considered and the final roster will probably come shortly after the Futures Game, while the Collegiate National Team’s roster is set to be announced on the 24th of this month. Not to mention the collegiate team is scheduled to be in Europe at the time of the game.

yeah, they'll be minor leaguers (maybe a random collegiate guy(s))

but, as one can probably imagine, mlb teams generally don’t allow their “good” minor leaguers to play for team usa.

Maybe Not...

Well, Rasmus, Longoria, LaRoche, Bryan Anderson, Tyler Colvin, Steven Pearce, Josh Outman, and Chris Perez were all on the 2007 team

There will probably be some pretty good prospects on the team, and I’d imagine they’ll send the younger prospects with a lesser chance of making the team from the pool of players to the Futures Game,

That was for qualifying though

Didn’t the qualifying tournament take place after the MILB season and during Arizona Fall League? I think that with the Olympics now occurring during the season that most teams would rather keep their players at their respective levels/ready for a September call up.

I think

it would actually be kind of exciting to see the college team match up against competition much more advanced than them. Plus, seeing collegiate prospects instead of minor leaguers is looking more into the future. There are some exciting players on the college national invite list (Stephen Strasburg, Kyle Seager, Josh Phegley, Dustin Ackley, Rick Hague, Kyle Gibson, Derek Deitrich, Hunter Morris ect ect)
Some of these guys (Gibson, Strasburg, Dietrich, Morris esp) would be Futures Game caliber if they had gone pro out of HS and the game used minor league rosters

I do see why it would be lame to not have the usual minor league stars but either way some exciting young talent will be on the field.

What i DO hate is the US vs. World or North America vs World or whatever the hell that is. It weakens the game, and if the all-star game can be league vs. league why can’t the Futures game be AL minor leaguers vs. NL minors?

Yeah...

I thought it would be pretty interesting to see college guys play against quality pro prospects when I first read the article. I’d love to see Kentrail Davis, and as an M’s fan, Stephen Strasburg has become a lot more interesting to me. As the M’s continue to lose I’ll probably start acting like a middle schooler and daydreaming while I write “With the #1 pick the Seattle Mariners select Stephen Strasburg” over and over and over in a notebook.

Response

I agree on the college vs minor league players matter. Hell, with all the scouts in attendance, it’d basically re-cast the Futures Game into a sort of amateur showcase . . .a nice little opportunity for college players, pitchers especially, to show their stuff and make a good impression on major league teams. Plus it might serve as a nice jumping on point for those interested in the college game by giving fans some names they can remember.

Team USA?

I thought baseball was being removed as an Olympic sport? Did I hear that wrong or what?

Thanks

Thought that may be the case, but I wasn’t sure.

minor leagers can be part of team USA

but the major league team can say No to letting its particular minor leaguer on…

for example if a minor leaguer is expected to be called up to the majors, then they won’t be put on the team

Not a big change

The eligibility rules for the Olympic team are pretty much any U.S. player not on a 25 man roster. The futures game team will not be a final Team USA roster, but a team assembled from the pool of candidates for team USA. They are considering it a trial for the final team.

So in effect, it’s going to look a lot like the usual futures game team. Most of the best players not on 25 man rosters are going to be the top prospects in the minors. But the talent will be chosen by the committee that is choosing players for Team USA, and it will be managed by Davey Johnson (managing Team USA.)
