College World Series
Anyone else watching?
Yesterday saw FSU get a clutch game-typing HR from Jason Stidham to tie the game at 5 only to give up a CWS single-inning record of ELEVEN in the top of the 9th to lose 16-5 to Stanford. Buster Posey was the first pitcher to fail FSU in that 9th
Tony Delmonico's defense was really a problem. Defense was FSU's huge weakness coming in and it played a huge role yesterday. BA made an apt Posey/Wieters comp as both were catcher/closer stars in the regular season but melted down in their first Omaha appearances after catching 8 innings. Neither got hit terribly hard but they couldn't get the ball by anyone and gave up a string of hits and runs.
Then game 2, Miami/Georgia, was another game that was tight the whole way. Freshman of the Year Chris Hernandez struck out 5 of the first 6 (only Beckham making contact) but lost effectiveness once the extreme shadows went away but still finished with a nice start. Alonso hit a late homerun off 2009 prospect Alex McRee to give Miami a 4-3 lead. Georgia won the game in a CRAZY ninth inning that I can't really do justice to if I try to describe it. It involved a passed ball strikeout to keep the ball rolling, a TERRIBLE throwing error by Miami's first rounder closer and some clutch contact hitting and basrunning by UGA.
UGA closer Josh Fields was lights out.
Weeks and Tekotte also homered for Miami.
Now FSU and Miami will be playing a rivalry game with the loser going home. Considering the brou ha ha the teams had earlier this year that game should be fought tooth and nails.
Today's game sees Fresno State, the lowest regionally seeded team to ever make Omaha, up 16-1 in a COMPLETE dismantling of Rice's vaunted pitching. And they are shutting down Rice's O.
All 3 lower ranked teams have one... we will have to see if #7 LSU can keep that up against #2 UNC tonight to send the ACC to 0-3.
Anyone else watching? Any thoughts/reactions?

re: Tony Delmonico
Dodgers apparently told him they were going to move him to catcher.

stat i just heard
something like 26 of the last 28 (or 16 of 18, something like that) of the eventual champs won their first game.
Point is, good to be Fresno, UNC, Georgia or Stanford
nice to see NorCal representing nicely!!
The Giants need to sign Harry Doyle.

yep
but one of Oregon State’s titles came after dropping game 1. What a gutsy program.
The other team to win after starting 0-1 was USC in ‘98 who won the legendary 24-18 (or something) natl title game.
And don’t worry about NorCal.. us southern boys are going to take care of yall nicely tomorrow : )

Clark
Matt Clark took Alex White deep opposite field tonight to pull into the national lead in HR’s this year. He choked later in the game in a big clutch situation with the bases loaded, but UNC has great pitching.
I asked this in another thread, but was late to the thread, and didn’t get any responses… Is he really only a 12th-round type player? Further confusing me is that San Diego has been said to have had a terrible draft (mostly due to the Dykstra overdraft, I’m sure), and they are the team which got him in the 12th (clearly ending any quick and easy route to the majors he might have had). It seems odd to me that a guy can lead the nation in HR, playing in the SEC, and be such an inauspicious pro prospect. Has anyone seen him? Is what BA writes about his weaknesses the truth? He seemed to catch up to White’s fastballs, and he was throwing hard.

I agree that
he is probably better than a round 12 guy.
His oppy field homer was impressive, and extra-impressive when you consider he hit it off a future top 5 pick. He really got his legs into that shot.
He isn’t a guy that just came out of nowhere either. He was a 28th rounder out of JUCO last year and a top 150 HS prospect at one point too.. plus his dad was an MLBer
That late at-bat vs. Moran did a great job showing part of why he fell so far. You can easily get him to swing and miss, he tries to hard for homers and he is vulnerable to lefties and breaking balls.
Plus, he is a big-bodied 1b-only bat.. and there are plenty of those.
Furthermore, many players have racked up big homer totals for LSU and not been much professionally.
I think he was probably more of rounds 5-9 kind of guy, but round 12 isn’t way far off from his talent.

More bad calls by umpires
Saw it yesterday in the Stanford-FSU game when an ump called an obvious fair ball, that hit the chalk about 3 feet in front, of him foul. Again today with the bases loaded for LSU Landry was clearly safe at first and was called out to end the inning. Didn’t end up hurting Stanford, but did hurt LSU.
All I want is to be able to watch a game were the umpires can make the right calls. Damn. watching the NBA playoffs has been hard enough with all the bullshit calls for the home team and now I get to see more horrible calls during the college world series. I know most old time baseball guys don’t want instant replay, but this shit is ridiculous. It is impossible to watch any sporting event today at least one bullshit call that changes the outcome of the game.

LSU
... apparently hadn’t used up it’s quota of 9th-inning comebacks this year. Wow.

LSU
Very happy to see LSU come back last night. The longer the Tigers’ fans are in town the more fun the CWS is. Great food, great fans, hot women and BEADS!
I can’t remember his name now, but the LSU left fielder was a freakin circus yesterday. Picked off first base, misplayed a ball down the line in to a double, then (watch the replay) he actually broke IN on the HR in the 6th inning.
Funniest moment so far for me was Wayne Graham “frantically” waving a guy home from second on a base hit. I thought for a moment he was going to fall over.
Worst moment so far for me was watching Graham take 5 minutes to walk from the dugout to the mound only to not make a pitching change. Next pitch was a hit and he went back out and made the change…....zzzzzzzz.

LSU left fielder
that would be future first round pick Jered Mitchell. He is probably the best athlete you could find at the CWS. Even started a couple games at WR for the football team when Early Doucet was out with an injury.

I hope you mean future NFL first round pick

That's him
LONG way to go to be a first round pick. He pulled up on that double down the line only to have it drop fair, then got to close to it and it bounced off the wall and back over his head. I don’t think I’ve seen a less athletic play in the CWS so far and I’ve only missed about 6 innings total.
