Jay Bruce, Where are you?
Has the Jay Bruce watch begun? The Reds are 7 games under .500 and now 8 games back and in last place. The Ken Griffy Jr. trade rumors have started. Cory Patterson is awful. He is hitting .200 with a solid .260 OBP. Who could have seen this coming??? The Reds look to be sliding out of it early. Hopper, Patterson, Freel and others are taking up space IMO and the time for Bruce seems to be at hand. Bruce was 4-5 yesterday raising his average to .320. If they Reds are not out of it, how can't Bruce help? If the Reds are out of it, why not bring him up? Other than financial reasons (arbitration clock) what is now gained by leaving Bruce in AAA? Hopefully the watch has started and with Votto's 3 dinger day, maybe just maybe Dusty will realize Bruce should be up in Cincy. I'm sure Red fans are ready for the Bruce era to start.
Thoughts? What time table do you see for Bruce to arrive?

Early June
No need to call him up now, wait for the Super-2 deadline to pass

LoL
2 Posts about Super-2’s at the same time. I thought I remembered reading that the Rays called up Longoria like 10 days before the deadline…which would have been about two weeks ago. That may all be wrong – but do you know exactly when that deadline happens?

The deadline is early June
The Mariners called up Clement a week before his Super-2 cutoff but he was on the roster last season. The Rays weren’t concerned about super-2 with Longo, they did call him up the day after the deadline to delay his FA clock, but that was moot when they signed him to a potential 9 year deal.

On Clement
I misspoke, he was going to be a super-2 either way unless they waited later, they called him up about a week before they got to delay his FA clock because he was up last year. He’ll be a FA in 2013 and Arb eligible after the 09 season

I don't think it's a hard deadline
it’s not established until after the season based on his service time based on a percentage of those players with under 3 years of service. If he’s in the top 15% or something like that, he’s super two.
In order to ensure that a player most likely won’t be in that group of the top 15% (or 20% or whatever the number is), the team delays them until the middle of May or early June.
It happened with Braun, Gallardo, and Pence last year.
Bruce likely won’t be called up for a few weeks because of that. the “aside from the money” aspect isn’t something to gloss over. By June 1, Bruce will likely be starting in CF for the Reds.

Definition
A Super-2 (some teams call them Senior 2s) is a player in the top 17 percent of the group of players with at least two but less than three years of service who also had at least 86 days of service (a half-season) in the previous season.
Usually, super 2’s will have something like 2 years, 150 days of service. I can’t recall any with less than 2+130 in service. The season is usually 182 days long, but a player only needs 172 days to receive credit for a full season. Of course, a player cannot accumulate more than one full season at a time.

I think
They have delayed him enough to not be a super 2….thus, it should be anytime.

Response
Might as well wait for a little while yet. I’d say things are proceeding about as well as can be hoped for with Bruce – he’s gotten off to a good start in Triple A and should be able to handle himself well enough in the majors, at least from a developmental standpoint. Hold off a little bit longer to make sure that the team is in the best position possible regarding the financial end of things and from there, it’s go time.

Dustys track record
Even if the Reds call him up, Dusty will play the veterans. Neifi Perez anyone.

Really?
Let’s see… Cueto, Volquez, Votto… all in the minors or riding the pine, right?
This Dusty bashing is really getting annoying. Is he perfect? Obviously not. But he’s not completely oblivious to what should be done, either. If Bruce comes up, I’m sure he’ll play a lot.

The same Dusty Baker who was unaware his players were batting out of order? I understand the money issue and can accept that. Jay is now @ .348 and ready when Cincy thinks it is financially prudent.
