Realistic Mock

It’s hard for me to imagine Buster Posey not going in the first 8 picks, but I can’t really see anyone else who shouldn’t be there, except maybe Alonso.

I think the talent available in this draft has been a bit underrated to this point.

by deezle on May 4, 2008 8:28 PM EDT   0 recs

Posey...

What is it that everyone sees in this kid? I, for one, am not impressed…He doesn’t have great power and his defense is still a work in progress…I’ll take Skipworth over Posey every day of the week.

I have a hard time imagining the Royals passing on Alvarez if he’s there, they’ve proven they go for the top talent.

I’m liking the fact that Tanner Scheppers is getting some love. I think he’s got better stuff than Matsuz.

by adschofield on May 4, 2008 9:02 PM EDT   0 recs

Huh?

He has outstanding power – do you just ignore college production?

by deezle on May 4, 2008 9:33 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

right now

he projects to have some pull power..he ultra short compact swing wont procude alot of HR but will help him hit over .300 with a great K rate

by jsmall404 on May 4, 2008 11:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

According to whom?

You? Posey’s production speaks for itself. If you feel like his college power won’t translate, fine, but it’s not fair or intelligent to completely dismiss it.

huh?

when did i say his college power wont translate? nor did i dismiss it. to say he has pull power is not a knock on him. most players dont have real opposite field power, let alone catchers.

posey could very easily hit 300 with 15 HR…and be a top 10 defensive catcher…that puts him up there with joe mauer and russell martin as the other guys who could say that in todays game.

but, to act like he is gonna hit 25 HR and hit 300+ just because he is hitting well in college dosent make sense..you have to look at the swing.

by jsmall404 on May 5, 2008 4:21 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Well..

I don’t ignore college production all together, but I certainly take it with a grain of salt. His swing is what will prevent him ever getting more than 15 HRs a year.

posey

i still don’t understand the posey hating that is on this board

by fewgoodcards on May 5, 2008 12:41 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

what are talking about?

Posey cant DEFINATLEY can stay at Catcher..Skipwroth may not. What do people like about this guy??? Oh, I dont know, maybe his 1.9 release time, plus arm, him hitting .450 this year..
Yeah, his D is a work in progress, cuz he has only been playing catcher for a year, and scouts already know he will be able to stay there.

And by the definition, Matusz has better “stuff” in that he has a better repitiore of pitches, however, Scheppers may have a better 1/2 punch in his slider and FB

sorry to rant, but, some people bring down the intelligence of this site.

For the record

1.9 pop is below ML average. I agree with everything else you said about Posey.

but

is above average for a college catcher..and one who has been catching for a 1.5 years….he isnt playing in the majors in 2 months so that is not a big deal…usually the minors are used for guys to improve =)

The question is whether he's top 8

I still see Tim Beckham, Pedro Alvarez, and Eric Hosmer ahead of him. And Justin Smoak right alongside, and Gordon Beckham close behind. And that’s just the hitters. And I can even see where some might see Shipworth’s upside as being higher, though I would still take Posey there.

This is sort of like the discussion you were having here recently with the guy who thought Gordon Beckham should be in the top 3 picks. It’s debateable. I think some are questioning Posey just because of recent reports that he could go #1. Whether he’s a good pick there is different from whether he’s in the top 10.

You did a good job of listing the positives for Posey. I think the questions raised will be that many think his power projects more as doubles power in MLB, and that he is naturally still going to be raw defensively. A good arm helps, but there’s more to defense behind the plate than a good arm. How high he goes is going to depend in part on how confident scouts are in his defense and makeup, as he still will have some work to do to be an MLB catcher. But, given the scarcity of talent at the position, if they really like him enough behind the plate, maybe he’s even worth a #1 pick.

And if Sheppers has the better 1/2 puch, he has the better “stuff.” If you’re getting into the third pitch, then it’s more about repertoire. Matusz not only has the better repertoire, he’s a lot more polished overall, better command, knows how to pitch. Scheppers is relatively inexperienced, as a converted SS, and ranked highly in good part based on raw stuff.

Overall, I’d say I have a pretty good idea at this point of roughly who the top 15 are, but putting them in exactly the right order, and especially guessing what teams will actually do, is another matter. It’s too soon for me to say for sure who should be #1

by acerimusdux on May 5, 2008 10:58 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

lol

your the only one in america who is dumb enough to saying “i have a pretty good idea of the top 15” a month before the draft. i think that statement speaks for itself

in your slotting of posey, you fail to account for the value of a college catcher who can stay at teh position and still add offenses. jim callis said today that TB’s interest in Posey #1 is very real .

by jsmall404 on May 5, 2008 4:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No

What I said was I have a pretty good idea of roughly who the top 15 are now, not what they will be on draft day. Pretty much every mock draft out there has almost the same 15 give or take a couple names. The ten here plus Hosmer, Posey, and Hunt are in almost everyone’s list right now. The last 2 names don’t tend to vary by a heck of a lot.

That you feel the need to insult anyone who disagrees over where a player falls in that group by within a few slots is what speaks volumes. I’m saying I have an idea where I think players should fall within a few slots; you are being rude to anyone who disagrees with your opinion over a few slots.

by acerimusdux on May 5, 2008 5:14 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

?

You mean Posey CAN definately stay at Catcher? I agree with that, but to think he’s some defensive stud is saying a bit much. He’s def. a work in progreess.

Oh, great he’s hitting .450 this year…wow, why don’t just put him in the Hall of Fame considering that will def. translate to the MLB…He’s got a short compact swing that will allow him to hit for an average, but not for power. And with that said, I don’t understand why he’s a top 10 prospect.

Sure, Skipworth might not be able to stick at C, but I think he will…He’ll never be elite defensively, but he’s got a plus arm and a nice power swing from the left side of tha plate.

I suppose why have different definitions of “stuff” then, I’ll take a guy with two plus pitches over a pitcher with 2 average pitches and a potentially plus pitch everytime.

by adschofield on May 5, 2008 4:54 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Top 10

Well, it looks like they’re up to 10:
T Beckham
J Smoak
B Matusz
P Alvarez
G Beckham
Y Alonso
A Crow
T Scheppers
K Skipworth
G Cole

I’d guess the next 5 in some order might be Eric Hosmer, Buster Posey, Shooter Hunt, Tim Melville, Aaron Hicks.

Beyond that, as of now I think the next ten are roughly

Christian Friedrich
Ethan Martin
Isaac Galloway
Tyson Ross
Kyle Lobstein
Sonny Gray
Brett Hunter
James Darnell
Brett Wallace
David Cooper

Though at this point, there starts to be lots of other options which might make as much sense.

sign

sonny gray hurt his ankle and wants to go to vandy. no one is gonna give him the money that is gonna pull him away from his commitment there after he isnt going to pitch again this season. do some research.

If...

If you can’t have a discussion on this board without insulting others, you should just stop posting.

by adschofield on May 5, 2008 4:56 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah right

I’m sure you’ve done plenty of research. But with the reading comprehension you’ve shown on this board I doubt it has done you any good.

by acerimusdux on May 5, 2008 5:21 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Wow

Within the last 24 hours you’ve completely erased any doubt that you are the new tool of the board.

Response

I think it’s probably safe to assume by now that “never say never” is the new order of the day when it comes to the idea of teams putting up the money to sign prospects to keep them away from college.

He might not go first round, but I’d be surprised if one of the big spenders didn’t grab Gray at some point and offer him first round money to sign. Almost any substantially above-slot deal would probably preclude Gray from pitching during the season anyways, so not sure what the issue would be there.
