Jay Bruce's early walk rate

He just walked again today and now has a 5-1 BB-K ratio.  Do you see Bruce continuing to draw walks or will he turn into Francouer and start chasing everything out of the zone.  John's crystalball for Bruce only had him drawing 8 walks the whole time he would be up this year vs. almost 50 K's.  I am quite surprised by this and just shows you that he may think AAA pitching is too easy and didn't bother drawing walks because he was hitting .360.  What do you people here think?

That has to be it, beacause

I got to watch his games against the pirates and his plate discipline was excellent. Maybe he felt like Vlad did about being in the DR. I believe his quote was “You don’t walk off the island”. Maybe Bruce felt like walking wasn’t going to get him to the majors faster? He should say someday when asked that “You don’t walk out of Triple A”.

Go Pirates!!!

I think he'll be average as far as plate disciple goes among major league

regulars. He won’t be as patient as guys like Miguel Cabrera or Adam Dunn, but he wont resemble Francoeur. He’s aggressive, and sometimes overly aggressive, but he’s not anywhere near Francoeur’s lack of discipline.

Small Sample Size

I think it’s still too early to make any real comment. Bruce sure looks like he can hit, though.

Yeah, but it's still nice to see

I mean, he walked only 12 times in his 184 AAA at bats – 5 in his first 14 major league at-bats seems to mean that he’s pretty well on his way to beating that number

He sure seems to have command of the strike zone.

He exudes confidence at the plate. Watching him in his first five games has been a treat. There really hasn’t been a thing he hasn’t done well so far, from his fielding (there’s no doubt he can handle CF at least for the time being) to his baserunning (he’s taking extra bases and looking absolutely outstanding) to his plate discipline (even besides the five walks he’s working the count into a favorable situation seemingly every time up) to his power (his walk-off today was launched and everything he touches is a rocket). I really can’t help but think we’re seeing the beginning of a Hall of Fame career based off of everything I’ve seen this week.

yeah...

without trying to sound sentimental or anything (and i picked him up a year and a half ago in a dynasty league), it’s kind of nice to be at the beginning of the major league career of a player who’s not only supremely talented but also a genuinely nice kid who’s going to go very far.

He's on a crazy role right now

He can literally do no wrong. Wait for him to at least stop hitting .700 before analyzing his component statistics. _

That said, it’s clearly a good sign, and I really don’t see the Francoeur comparison at all.

Francoeur

With respect and homage to Lloyd Bentsen: I know Jeff Francoeur, I rooted for Jeff Francoeur, Jeff Francoeur was a friend of mine… Jay Bruce is no Jeff Francoeur. Bruce has thus far exhibited a great batting eye, has a lightning quick bat with strong wrists, and can run. Sure, he’s not going to hit .700, but he’s likely a better hitter right now than Jeff Francoeur will ever be. And I’m a Braves fan and root like crazy for Francoeur!

josh hamilton

can you imagine if the reds would have held on to hamilton? i’m not saying that they aren’t better off w/ volquez given their need for pitching but that outfield could’ve potentially been amongst the best ever from a hitting perspective.

I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

...

Let’s not crown Bruce the king yet. Please, give him at least a month….
