MOD: Colorado Rockies II
I'm listing a new poll for the Rockies based on new lists by John, BA, and others. Who should the Rockies seek at #25 overall?
The names who I expect to be already gone are-
Beckham, T.
Posey, B.
Alvarez, P.
Matusz, B.
Crow, A.
Smoak, J.
Beckham, G.
Skipworth, K.
Alonso, Y.
Friedrich, C.
Hicks, A.
Hunt, S.
Wallace, B,
Melville, T.
Martin, E.
Fields, J.
Please provide comments- especially if you want the Rockies to look at someone not mentioned.

BBA Mock draft
Hey Frobes,
BB America’s mock draft has the Rockies taking high school pitcher Jake Odorizzi at #25. Should he be added in the mix? Although Ike Davis has a slight edge in the poll, Herbie the Karaoke King of the Get Away Cafe has to wonder if he’ll make it past the Mets at #22 (or #18).

Hey, are you being a scouting director today, Brian? It’s good to hear from you. I’ll be around today if you want to communicate and help out with the Rox draft. :)
I’ll certainly consider Odorizzi. If nothing else, he’s got a great name.
Hope all is well.

Things are well although a Mets’ hot streak could make them better. I’m not a scouting director today but I will be checking in on the mock draft. I’ll try to chime in when the Rox are on the clock.

Colorado selects JEMILE WEEKS, 2B, U. of Miami
Davis, Cole, and Lawrie were gone by pick #25. I chose Weeks over Casey Kelly. We’ll see how that bodes for the future.
Thanks for everyone’s help.

Complete Colorado Rockies MOCK draft - 2008
1. (25th overall) 2B JEMILE WEEKS – U. of Miami (FL), 21 yo, ranks #19 Sickels, #27 BA
2. (72) OF ROBBIE GROSSMAN – Cypress-Fairbanks HS (TX), 18yo, - Sickels, #49 BA
3. (103) LHP DAN HULTZEN – St. Albans HS (Wash DC), 18 yo, - Sickels, #79 BA
4. (137) RHP KYLE WEILAND – Notre Dame (IN), 21yo, - Sickels, #88 BA
5. (167) RHP ETHAN HOLLINGSWORTH – Western Michigan, 21 yo, - Sickels, #105 BA
During my long wait after the first pick, I wanted Daniel Webb, a HS pitcher from Kentucky, but he did not quite slide to me as NYM took him at #69 overall. I felt that Grossman was good value there as a switch-hitting, athletic HS OF.
For round 3, I had my eye on Daniel Hunter, a RHP from Pepperdine, but he went two picks earlier to San Diego (#101 overall). My fallback, Hultzen, struck out 127 batters in 66 innings as a HS senior.
My last two picks were about picking up a couple of hard throwers who might move up the system quickly as 21yo college pitchers without a lot of mileage on their arms.
This was fun to see if someone would fall to me, and I’m happy getting both a mix of HS/college players and hitters and pitchers.

today's draft
I guess the Weeks pick looks pretty good with Oakland snagging him at #12 overall, eh? We’ll see how he turns out, but it looks like the Mock Rockies got a “riser.”

Actual Rockies draft (through 5 rounds)
1. (25) LHP CHRISTIAN FREIDRICH – E. Kentucky
2. (72) OF CHARLIE BLACKMON – Ga. Tech
3. (103) RHP AARON WEATHERFORD – Miss St
4. (137) RHP ETHAN HOLLINGSWORTH – Western Michigan – DING! (took him in Rd. 5)
5. (167) 3B CHRIS DOMINGUEZ – Louisville
Including the 6th round pick (C Kiel Roling – Ariz St), the Rockies have taken 6 straight college players- 3 hitters and 3 pitchers. I split my position players and pitchers similarly, but mixed in some high school kids. It feels pretty good to hit on one of the Rockies picks – Hollingsworth – who I got in Rd. 5 and the Rockies chose in the 4th round.
Next post, I’ll show where my Rockies’ mock picks actually fell.

Mock Rockies draft - actual slots in MLB draft yesterday/today
1. (25) 2B JEMILE WEEKS – taken in 1st round (12th overall) by Oakland +13
2. (72) OF ROBBIE GROSSMAN – taken in 6th round (174) by Pittsburgh -102
3. (103) LHP DAN HULTZEN – not yet selected through 6 rounds
4. (137) RHP KYLE WEILAND – taken in 3rd round (108) by Boston +29
5. (167) RHP ETHAN HOLLINGSWORTH – taken in 4th (137) by Colorado +30
I obviously drafted very well with my college picks. The average was slot was 24 slots or almost a full round higher than I selected the player.
The high school selections were a little different. Both Grossman and Hultzen have committed to D1 schools and have probably scared off teams from drafting them earlier. I still like each player’s future. It will be interesting if the Pirates can sign Grossman to keep him from being a Texas Longhorn. Similarly, the BA site says Hultzen is “firmly committed to the U. of Virginia.” If either player goes on to college, it’ll be fun to check his progress.
