Cape Fear Update: First Base
I was really looking forward to Wily Mo doing an Around the Cape of Cuddles or whatever for each of the positions, but he's been busy going to yard sales with John's wife, I guess. Anyway, I'm procrastinating research work so I thought I'd do an updated look at the upper parts of Wily Mo's list:
His Top 100 guys
Other candidates (quickly tiered):
So, the big risers in value for me are Chris Davis, Sean Doolittle, and Jeff Larish; I think each takes a bump up in the prospect strata. Doolittle probably a couple bumps as he's now a top 50 prospect, I think. Votto looks like the real deal and I would guess he's lining himself up for Paul Konerko's career.
I think Weglarz is the sleeper as power is supposed to be his big tool. He's showing himself to be an OBP machine and if the power turns on like it should then we're looking at a wet dream number three hitter.
There were more guys on Wily Mo's list but I can only procrastinate for so long.
I'd recommend adding Jovan Rosa in the Cubs org as a first base sleeper; he's played some first, some third, and is hitting 312/393/471 as a 20 year old in the MWL.

Speaking of Jeff Larish
He got called up by the Tigers today to replace Gary Sheffield, who has been put on the DL.
boy, that's weak, isn't it?
in any case, meant to say I would add Mike Carp to that list, and actually put him fairly high up on that list. anyone else who should be added?
a quick ranking, by me, would be:
1-Chris Davis
2-J Votto
3-N Weglarz
4-Daric Barton
5-Sean Doolittle
6-Lars Anderson
7-Chris Marrero
etc.
That’s pretty off-the-cuff, so wouldn’t defend that order to the death. any names altogether missing? any alternate rankings?
daric barton ?
i’d put everyone on that list ahead of barton long term. what’s so great about a corner infielder that has no power and plays a marginal 1b at best. i don’t get it?
I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

Age
He’s 22 and has mad plate discipline and contact skills. He only needs to bang out 15 HR per year to be average, and he’s a star if he hits 25 HR per year. On top of that, other than Votto, he’s the only one that’s actually in the show and proven he can hit at AAA. I wouldn’t say he’s proven he can hit major league pitching yet, but he’s a lot closer than Anderson/Marrero..etc.
In case you don't believe me
Through the first 278 PA of his career, most at the tender young age of 22, he’s been about league average for a 1b.
Billy Beane would disagree with you
The A’s seem very happy with Daric’s defense at 1B.
“Beane: Yeah and I just don’t like that up and down yo-yo. We’ve been pretty good about avoiding that over the last 10 years. It’s not that it hasn’t happened. I’m not convinced that it’s a good idea. We’re just not convinced that’s the best option at this point. Daric’s done a good job defensively. He’s played good defense and I think I saw somewhere that one of the defensive fielding bibles had him as the best defensive fielding first baseman in the league. “
Beane may be referring to the fact that Barton is first in the league in RZR, and third in OOZ.
not that hot on him, actually
but I don’t see putting Barton below guys like Doolittle et al who are still in the lower rungs—50% shot they never even make the pros.
