Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

BRUCE IS ON THE LOOSE!!!!!!!!!!!

From Rotoworld:

"The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Jay Bruce will be called up before Tuesday's game."
"It was definitely time. The report doesn't indicate what change will be made to open up a roster spot. The Reds might as well release Corey Patterson, who shouldn't have a role with Bruce up. Ryan Freel can continue to get some starts versus lefties, though the Reds probably won't use Bruce as a true platoon player."

Personally I think this is long overdue.  According to Yahoo in his last 14 games Bruce is hitting .529 in his last 14 games with five home runs and 15 RBIs at Triple-A Louisville. I expect him to continue to rake when he makes his debut and I could see a line along that of Braun from last season.  What does everyone else see for this future superstar?

I'll be a contrarian

I don’t think Bruce will be successful in the majors until he cuts down on the Ks.

He looked bad when I first seen him play in Syracuse

Ever since that game he’s hit about .380 but I saw a guy who couldn’t hit a breaking ball and work a count. He was also poor in center with average range but overthrew cutoff man and made a bad judgement throw which allowed an extra run score later in the inning. We’ll see what happends, but he’s been a hitting clinic since that 0-5 3 K game I saw.

Are you kidding? Everyone is entitled to a bad game...

He’s an easy upgrade over Hairston and Patterson. He’ll learn on the job, but who better to learn from other than Griffey who was in the same situation almost 2 decades ago. I think Bruce will be fine. He should put up better numbers than Longoria (the way Evan is hitting at this point). I don’t think All-Star numbers are going to come, but he’ll be better than league average…

Bruce

He’s a major hoss. I saw him a lot this year, and appears that he’ll be on the verge of superstardom. I think he’ll turn out to become a Robin Yount morphed into Albert Belle. Or Andy Van Slyke with better sideburns. Me and my buddy “Bones” went to a tonne of games this year, and once we went with Bones’ wife, and she ended up talking with Bruce for like 20 minutes before the game. We thought she would go home with Bruce… until he went 0 for that evening, and became less appealing. LOL!!!!

Day Late

If they had made this announcement yesterday, I wouldn’t be stuck with Mark Kotsay in my lineup this week:(

So, I'm going to play the devils advocate here

Since the Reds chose to keep Bruce down to start the season, wouldn’t it have made more sense to keep him down for one more week so that he doesn’t burn up a year of service time in 2008?

Of course, my math could be wrong here, but it seems like 5 days in 2008 isn’t worth the whole 2014 season.

Add a RBI single

2-2 (both opposite field)
2 BB
SB
RBI

pretty nice debut

A singles hitter...

might as well be Joey Gathright. What a bust!

Now 3-3

with a RBI double

I think Jay Bruce is my new hero.

by nyy601 on May 27, 2008 10:06 PM EDT reply actions

Everything he hit tonight was ripped.

His first single was an opposite field liner, his second was a liner just past the third baseman with the bases loaded for an RBI single, and his double was crushed over the RF and off the wall for another RBI. I don’t recall a swing and a miss at all on the night, and he worked every count he was in. As a Reds fan, I’m very much looking forward to watching him.

Great debut

Three hits, one double, two RBI, one steal, and two walks. Reaching base in his first five PAs is setting quite the lofty expectations!!

Patterson Released

Corey Patterson was optioned to the minors today. This is great news for Bruce fans as he no longer has to worry about Baker playing Patterson over Bruce.
