Pour some out for Yovani

Yovani Gallardo is likely done for the season with a torn ACL.

http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/05/02/yovani-gallardo-has-a-torn-acl-likely-out-for-the-rest-of-the-s/

"An examination in Milwaukee this morning revealed Gallardo suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in that collision with Chicago's Reed Johnson near first base in the fifth inning. He was placed on the 15-day DL and right-hander Dave Bush was recalled from Class AAA Nashville to replace him.

No decision will be made on surgery until the swelling subsides in Gallardo's knee. But he in all likelihood will miss most if not all the rest of the season, a severe blow to the Brewers' chances in 2008."

Just too bad....

With all the buildup and bluster that guys like Joba, Hughes, and Bucholtz have gotten. I think that Gallardo was the forgotten prospect. He produced more than any of those guys.

Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

knee problems

in both knees now this season, feel bad for him but as a Cubs fan I will now revel in the crappiness of the Brewer rotation.

Question

Does anyone think this injury will impact his long term development? He is essentially missing a full season of action and this could set him back.

In most cases...

I look at an injury like this (young pitcher/non-pitching arm injury) and see the silver lining that comes with the fact that there is 200 innings that young arm won’t have to throw.

Doesn't Compute

By that logic if one were to take the best 18 year old pitching prospect and shut him down for 6 years that he would then be much less injury prone than a similar 24 year old who had been pitching. I believe that the pitching muscles must be developed, certainly with prudence, but there is no way that a year of inactivity is a good thing for his long term health. Not too mention having surgeries on both knees already by the age of 23

Does Compute

I see your angle. If I had to guess, based on Gallardo’s perfomance thus far, I’d say that his “pitching muscles” are quite developed. Obviously, the concern wil be a full recovery from the surgery. I’ll bet that he bounces back in time for next year.

Maybe.

This sucks a lot but at least it’s not an arm problem. He relies on location for his success and the long term effects of that shouldn’t be hindered by this; his velocity, however, is up in the air.

What bad luck for Yovanni. Hes been one of my favorite pitching prospects the last couple of years.

A real shame

Was at the game (awesome seats, right behind home plate) and saw the collision…some less than super-informed Cubs fans laughed a little because it looked sorta funny, but I immediately realized that YoGa’s knee was probably still tender…what a sad, sad day. Last time I saw anything that scary live was the Choi/Prior collision…

The report said Gallarado fell over Reed Johnson, but live it looked like he ran into Prince…anyone see enough replays to figure out what happened?
