Blake Dewitt

All right.  Blake Dewitt had went yard again today and added a double to bring his season line to .327 .400 .533 in 107 ab's.  Sure 107 ab's isn't a huge sample size but did anyone on the planet see this type of start for him?  I mean, this is a guy who spent the majority of last season in the Cal League struggling to put up an OPS over .800 and now he's just about the best hitter in the Dodgers lineup.  The natural question is:  Is this performance real?

Right now his BABIP is a fairly high .350 especially given his low line drive rate (13% according to fangraphs).  It is unlikely that he will maintain that kind of BABIP but I also would think that the line drive rate is a little low for him as well.  The kid seems to have a pretty good idea what he's doing at the plate evidenced by his 12/13 bb/k ratio and it isn't as if the pedigree isn't there either.  A first round pick out of high school in 2004 he was seen as one of the best pure hitters in the draft that year and even throughout his early struggles in the minors scouts continued to praise his smooth lefty stroke.

The walk rate definitely has come of a surprise to me.  It's not often that you see a guy double his career walk rate after only a handful of ab's in AA but it's getting to the point where it seems like that discipline may be for real.   Of course pitchers may just need a chance to adjust to him but that seems a little less likely given all the previous praise of his stroke and his ability to let the ball travel deep into the zone.

So what do you guys think?  I for one am being more and more convinced that this kid is the real deal.  I certainly wouldn't expect him to maintain the batting average but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him finish with a line somewhere around .290 .365 .470 which is certainly good enough to start at third base for a lot of major league teams.  Also, it isn't out of the realm of possibility that he could be moved back to second which would make that line stand out even more.

re: Dewitt

I have him on my fantasy team, so I just ran a luck adjusted stat line for him; .261/.344/.465. Not as good as the his real numbers look, but still very good for a 22 y/o with only 187 PA in the upper minors heading into the season. There is obviously a lot of room for improvement.

I had him ranked #35 amongst position prospects in Febuary and would have moved him up at least ten spots when he made the team out of spring training, so I can’t say this is totally unexpected. On the high side of his range of outcomes? Sure, but not totally out of line. I’d make his value right now very similar to Joe Randa…with room for improvement.

Dewitt

His approach at the plate so far in the majors is that of a 8 year vet. He just works the count beautifully and has a really nice, left handed swing.

This does pose a problem for Laroche though as he really doesn’t belong in AAA and needs to play in the majors.

What do you do with this situation?

I remember 2 years ago they had Dewitt play a bit of 2b but they scratched those plans. Maybe its time to re-visit them? Clearly both young players need to play at the major league level and with 2b opening up in 2009, maybe that is the best way?

Had went?

If Dewitt has the defensive chops to handle 2nd at the major league level I think that’s definitely something that the Dodgers should look into. Kent will most likely be gone next year and it seems that if Furcal isn’t resigned then the shortstop position will have to be a battle between Abreu and Hu, neither of which have shown they can hit at the major league level with the loser battling for the 2nd base job. Now I wouldn’t be opposed to either one of those guys manning either ss or 2b because of their defensive prowess but the thought of two guys who haven’t really shown that they can hit at the major league level worries me quite a bit. Also, it would be a travesty not to give Laroche a proper shot at third base. I mean, if Dewitt’s approach is that of an 8 year vet then Laroche’s is…...............something better. The guy currently has 20 bb’s to 5 k’s at Las Vegas this year all while maintaining an ISO close to .300. Yes, it’s Cashman but when is the last time you heard of a guy having a 4 to 1 bb/k ratio at any level?

Barry Bonds, 2002 and 2004 at the major league level:)

5:1

Ted Williams, 1941. Everybody remembers his .406 batting average, but nobody remembers his 147 walks and only 27 strikeouts (technically, his BB:K is closer to 5.5).

This isn’t to take away anything from Dewitt, Laroche, or Bonds – I just came across this the other day and thought it was freaky

ehh

I don’t really consider either of them to be human and as such their performances are not comparable.

Young

I cast my vote for Delwyn Young at second! He hasn’t played a full season there since 05, and I have no idea why he moved, but he’s played there a little bit this year. I hope he gets a shot to play more some day although it probably won’t be with the Dodgers.

Young

I always liked him as well, and I think the Dodgers could have handled him better. But he was moved off of 2B because he was a butcher in the field. They had him there in spring training and I heard that his defense improved somewhat, so maybe that’s not such a bad idea. Regardless, a Jeff Kent replacement is certainly in order soon.

LaRoche

One thing I will say. Even if Dewitt is the clear starter, Laroche needs to be in the Show. They can put an end to the Luis Maza experiment and use Laroche to get come actual value out of that roster spot.

always liked DeWitt

so maybe i’m less surprised than others, but surely, this is a very pleasant surprise….

LaRoche needs to be up!!!

Maybe a LaRoche/DeWitt platoon is the way to go-—-let them play their way in or out of the position by platooning at 3B the rest of the year. Bottom line is LaRoche needs to be in the Major Leagues soon and hopefully the Dodgers can find AB’s for both of them somehow--they have both earned the shot IMO. They need to bite the bullet and let Nomar know that his time is up-—he is washed up-—pay him off and get rid of him now-—the Dodgers can certainly afford to do it--, and get both these young guys in the lineup——now!!!i

Nah

“Maybe a LaRoche/DeWitt platoon is the way to go-—-let them play their way in or out of the position by platooning at 3B the rest of the year”

Let me preface by stating that I love Laroche. He deserves a chance to play in a big league stadium.

However, Dewitt has thrived on his chance to play his way into the third position. He has hit for average, decent power, and shown great discipline. It doesn’t make sense to disrupt that just to make Laroche happy. Perhaps the Dodgers should bite the bullet and deal Laroche to fill another hole.
