Minor League Leaders: Terry Tiffee
My post today focuses on a guy who does a little of everything, Terry Tiffee. In 38 games so far for the Las Vegas 51's, (Los Angeles Dodgers AAA team) he is batting a AAA leading .430, with 21 doubles, 33 RBI's, and an OPS over 1.000. Again, he is pretty old at 29 years. But, with the Dodgers not really having a set third basemen, he could get a call. Their fill-ins have done a great job with Nomar having his usual injury problems. But, how can you not call up a guy who's hitting well above .400? It definitely won't hurt to try, and if it doesn't work, send him back down. But is he too old to be formed into an all-star?

mailbag
The Dodgers mailbag at mlb.com addressed this very thing. As noted there, Tiffee is not of the 40-man roster, and therefore is a longshot to be promoted to LA. Because of the depth the Dodgers have at the position on the 40-man, it would inevitably cost them a player via waivers.
In response to your second question: no, 29 is not too old. Bob Brenly was called up in his late 20’s, and later made an all-star team. I don’t see Tiffee’s AAA performance thus far translating to the majors. At best he would be an adequate corner infielder. Realistically, he probably could fit somewhere as a utility man with potential to blossom into a good pinch hitter.
That said, I am very much rooting for Tiffee to prove otherwise. However, it will most likely have to be with another organization, barring a season-ending injury to someone on the Dodgers’ 40-man.

Dodger fan perspective
Speaking from the point of view of a Dodger fan, I would like to tell you we do have a set third baseman and his name is Blake Dewitt. In case Dewitt slows down or this back tightness we’ve been hearing about the past few days lingers, Laroche still deserves a shot, and Nomar will be ready to go soon.
Tiffee is in a real tough place. Yeah, he’s hitting over .400, but even if some of the improvement is real, he’s got the stigma of hitting it in Vegas and the rest of the PCL parks. He has to worry about the 40 man roster issues detailed above, and the fact that he’s fourth on the depth chart behind a longtime top prospect who really has nothing left to prove in the minors, an out of nowhere fan favorite who never takes a play off and whose bat actually seems to be coming around, and Nomar.

All star?
He’s really a Quad-A player with a shot at being a legitimate backup. People have become all-stars at his age, but he’s probably not the guy to do it. I’d say his likely upside is somewhere around Jack Hannahan, good enough to fill in but never quite good enough to have a job to call his own.
Hey fish, leave those kids alone!

Tiffee does have some MLB experience...
in a little less than 240 ab’s he’s put up a .226/..273/.351 line. Twins really leaned on him down the stretch in 05 and filled in a lot at 3rd. He just couldn’t hit offspeed stuff at the time. He always put up decent numbers, but if you look at a pretty extensive minor league track record you can tell that this seasons line is so much of an outlier that you wouldn’t want to waste a spot on the 40 man this early in the season. If he’s hitting like this in a month then it might be a different story.
Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
