Yusmeiro Petit
What is the deal with Yusmeiro Petit? Will he get a shot at the bigs this year with Arizona? Is he trade bait?
He has usually had fairly good minor league numbers. He pitched well enough in spring training to make the big league ball club, but then was abandoned in the bullpen. Ok, maybe abandoned isn't fair, but he wasn't getting many innings so he was sent down to AAA. In Tucson this year, Petit has been fairly good. 13.2IP 13H 0BB 12K. A 3.95 ERA isn't terrible.
The D-Backs may not be a normal team, in that they don't currently have many questions in their rotation. So, does Petit continue to pitch in AAA or will the DBacks eventually either call him up and install him in the rotation(should RJ get hurt) or the bullpen(and actually give him innings).
Or, will they trade him and if so, for what?

I’ve been holding out hope that he does something but when he gets a shot, he just fails to perform. :( Now I dunno if I’d go as far as Ramp there but you can’t really deny that he hasn’t been good.

Agreed
Honestly, he’s never been given a legitimate shot, but that’s because he’s been absolutely terrible in the bigs.

Not anything to write home about but solid.
He was completely horrendous in his debut though

Scouting versus Stats
It’s my understanding that Petit was a classic scouting v. stats player. Traditional scouts were not too keen on him, but he put up good numbers. I took a flyer on him in my fantasy league a few years back, but I finally cut him this month. His skills, be it mechanics, stuff, control, approach, etc., simply didn’t match his earlier numbers. Traditional scouts picked up on this early on (as noted in John’s book a couple of years ago as well as other sources). As Petit progressed up the ranks, his numbers declined. He simply is not a quality MLB pitcher. Maybe he’ll get a shot somewhere, some time in the future, and string together a few quality months or even years. Mostly likely, unfortunately, he has already peaked. Bummer.

+1
Petit has youth on his side, and pitchers dominate the minors without good stuff the way he did tend to be be very in tune with how to maximize their stuff. Unfortunately, Petit does not have a fastball worth commenting about. He’s really just armed with a good changeup. I think that he stands a good chance of developing into a back end innings eater if somebody is willing to let him figure things out in the majors. However, Petit simply won’t ever live up to those minor league numbers because his stuff (not just a lack of velocity, but movement) will simply never be good enough to get by the best major league hitters, or even some of the merely “better” mlb hitters.

He is a mediocre pitcher
and I mean that in a good way.
He could have Josh Fogg’s career.
He just isn’t the kind of guy a contender goes out of their way to ‘free”.
Even most scouts didn’t say he could NOT pitch in MLB.
The scouting line was just that he wasn’t the future star, or serious prospect, people were assuming based on his numbers. He was always more of a fringe guy (probably #5 starter, middle relief or AAA/MLB shuttle with maybe a max upside of a #3/4) to them, which aint a bad livin.
They gave him credit for what he did do well… locate, change speeds and mix in a little deception in his mechanics.
That just isn’t enough to make a short, fastball-less RHP anything more than so-so

Will Inman?
He's extremely quick and good.

Na I think Inman is a slightly better pitcher plus his park is really going to help him if/when he gets up to SD.
