Rasmus turning into the next Dee Brown

Another poor night for Rasmus 0-4 leaves his average at .189.  Didn't Brown fall apart when he reached AAA and never recovered.  The same thing could be happening to Rasmus.  I beginning to think that last year could of been a big fluke and that Rasmus is not going to any good at all.  The team dropped Rasmus to the 8 spot and it didn't work.  What do you all think here?

BABIP

I think that is what a .220 BABIP will do for you. If he has a .300 BABIP like last year, his line is .265/.353/.409. He’s basically short about three homeruns right now from having nearly identical periphs as last season. I wouldn’t worry, and in fact would promote him to the bigs ASAP. Granted, he has fallen behind McCutchen.

McCutch

So has Maybin if you ask me. Bruce, LaPorta and McCutch should be everyones top 3 OF prospects right now. I’d even put McCutch ahead of LaPorta due to the age difference and competition level.

BABIP

If he had a 20% line drive rate instead of a 5% line drive rate, he’d have a higher BABIP.

When one isn’t making good contact, one is going to have a low BABIP, and therefore a low batting average.

As silly as it is

to make grand proclamations after 6 weeks of baseball it is equally silly to just pretend things happened that didn’t or wave the ridiculous wand of BABIP and pretend a guy wasn’t playing as crappy as he was.
A .190 BA for a talented hitter is concerning no matter what. It is no where near the end for him or anything, every hitter has slumps, but it isn’t some “bad luck” or something to dismiss

BABIP doesn’t just “happen”. It isn’t good luck and bad luck (the vast majority of the time).
OF COURSE crappy hitters are going to have crappy BABIPs. That is how things work. It doesn’t mean they aren’t crappy.

And i looove how you say, well if you just added 3 homers.
How many hitters WOULDN”T have great statlines if you gave them 3 free homers every 40 games.
That is an extra 12 homers a year. Its a ridiculous argument

BABIP isn't quite good and bad luck

But it isn’t true that better hitters necessarily have better BABIPs. Albert Pujols normally has a BABIP in the area of .320. Significantly worse hitters often have significantly better BABIPs

I think you’re right that Rasmus’ first month and a half should be of concern, but not a huge amount of it. I don’t think you’re seriously arguing that Rasmus is a crappy hitter, though he certainly has been hitting like one recently. The best course, probably, is to be somewhat wary of him and watch closely to see how much he improves over the next four months

Variance

The point is, when a guy is “supposed” to have 8 HR right now and he has five, that is not cause for concern. If he had two, then maybe. We’re still only a quarter of the way through, so this hardly counts as the “long term”. If he keeps the pace up for a whole season, then there might be cause for concern.

they dropped him to the 8 spot

for one game. I wouldn’t call him the next Dee Brown unless this continues all the way to the All star break. My theory is he’s seeing guys like Ryan Braun, Evan Longoria get big contracts and he’s putting way to much pressure on himself.

To early to tell

Granted it’s not a good sign, but there’s alot of season.

You've got to be kidding

I know you are a running punchline for how ridiculously reactive you are, but still, you have to be some character.

No one is this insanely reactive in reality.

You think The last two years of Rasmus’ great success is a fluke based on one month of baseball? You can’t see how foolish that is?

Exactly What I Said...

Not long ago on the Beckett Baseball boards, I suggested that “braves” had to be a character, or he had started trying to live upto the character people had decided he was. I also suggested he may be doing this as a way to get attention, even if the attention wasn’t positive. I compared him to a girl on Girls Gone Wild, but they atleast get cheap swag for their trouble.

fluke

i think if anything is fluky it is his start this year. he isn’t striking out that much, so he is just having some bad luck. obviously he is struggling, but i think once some hits start falling in he will get his confidence back and get it rolling.

+1

I’d do plus 1000 but I’m only one guy.

First comparing me comparing young Mr. Rasmus to Shawn Green was insulting, now,he’s Dee Brown. Gotta love ya Braves. Don’t get mad man. Just teasin’ ya a little :-)

how is being

compared to Shawn Green insulting?

by nms on May 16, 2008 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not sure but I don’t think he thought it was. It sounds like case compared him to Green but Braves didn’t like it. Now he is comparing him to Dee Brown who is even worse. That is how I read it.

Green

I mean, he only had 3 40hr seasons and is only one of the best all-around RF in baseball at the turn of this century. Besides, he flamed out pretty badly afterwards. Clearly it is an insult to be compared to an OF with a career OPS+ of 120.

Shoulder issues

Didn’t he have massive shoulder issues around this time?

Obviously he had Steroid Shoulder...

which is a complication from being a good player in the steroid era.

I mean, the only reason players peak is because they use steroids, and the only reason they decline is because they stop using steroids.

Duh.
