Seattle Mariner's MOD #2 W/ New Poll

Okay, in a couple days for part 3 I'm going to post a draft board to discuss. Anybody know how to link an excell spreadsheet to a fanpost? Is it self explanitory? If it is I guess it isnt for me yet. but I'll figure it out.
Anyways, in MOD #1 we had some real good discussion with my main, mock, Mariner scouts...Mr. Kupe and VanillaGorilla...as well as Drunkfish. Here is the link to MOD #1.
http://www.minorleagueball.com/2008/5/12/508357/seattle-mariner-s-mock-org
The poll there was the second one posted and though it only had/has 13 votes so far combined with the first poll I took down we have isolated a few good possible selections if we were picking because Bill Bavasi and co. were sick that day. The new poll lists the favorite/most likely to be there picks. Tell me who you like.
ANY info about Conor Gillespie and/or David Cooper would be much appreciated. I realize these are not obscure College players but I still havent seen them a lot and would welcome any and especially first-person accounts of them playing ball.
Also, ANY PLAYER mentioned here will go on the draft board to discuss so nows your chance to vote for your cousin or whatever. I'm democratic but, I'd prefer to discuss players who are actually GOOD :-) If only because we are only going 5 rounds with this thing. I want 5 big league regulars guys! Help me look good okay?

pick
i think you are being pretty optimistic putting guys like friedrich and wallace in your poll when you don’t pick until 20. i don’t think either of those guys have a chance of making it this far.

True perhaps...
...but I started initially with a poll from BA’s draft tracker and just went from players 15-23 figuring these would be the players available. I could have started with #20 but I figured a player or 2 from 15-19 might drop but likely nobody from 1-15.
Logically it seems like Wallace could drop since there is a highly though of HS 1b in the 1st round (Hosmer) plus 2 College stud 1b projected that high as well (Smoak and Alonso). If enough teams have other needs, other goals I’d say a solid College bat like Wallace could be there at 20. Not that I’d take him but, it’s something to consider. As far as Friedrich, I imagine you are right FGC.

Wallace and Weeks
are my favorite from that list. I dont think Freidrich gets to us. I also really like Ike Davis. (With ASU having a pretty good year, there is a good chance that they will be on TV in the next few weeks, so we should make it a point to check out both Davis and Wallace) He really put together a monster year before his recent injury. The other day sickles rated his bat ahead of Wallace’s due to the fact that beyond the 15 HR he also has 20 something doubles. I think the real Ms have been guilty of not building a roster to suit their park, with a lack of lefty power. Before Clement came up, Ibanez was the only power bat from the left side and he is 36 years old. I would prefer Davis to Cooper or Gillespie. I have only seen video of Weeks so I am going off of scouting reports, but with the thin crop of middle infield prospects in the minors and the struggles of the the Lopez and Betancourt, I think Weeks definitely has to be considered.
My personal board for hitters likely/maybe to fall to us (I think I’ve changed this from 2 days ago, obviously if someone like Alonso or Hosmer were to fall for whatever reason they would elevate to the top of this list)
Wallace
Davis
Weeks
Hicks
Martin (pitcher?)
Cooper
Gillespie
And for the 4th or 5th round dont forget about Phelps from ND, and I’ll try to do some research to locate other candidates for the 2nd-5th round

Good stuff again
I’m making a draft board for rounds 2-5 mostly currently but I have a few other things going on so it’ll take probably a week but I’ll check out Phelps and Liebel and I’ll put him on there for consideration for pick 5.
As far as your board for round one …a few things 1) Agree that I should look closer at Ike Davis. In fact he actually kind of REMINDS me of Ibanez for some reason.
2) I may be underrating Weeks but I just have a hard tinme seeing him as the 20th best player even though he may be a solid player. I think I am biased against players with little pop unless they are STELLAR with the glove…. get on base a ton…. steal bases.
3) After watching some clips of Gillespie I am willing to take Gillespie off the board unless he drops to pick 66 in round 2 *which he won’i, i assume). Not a great athlete at 3b… not real strong…kinda like maybe Dave Magadan (if you remember him) or something to me. NOT a top 20 player.
I like all the other players on your short list though and I’m sure we’ll get one of them.
Keep looking for players who we can get from rounds 2-5 VG though, and I’ll put em on the big spreadsheet when I finish it.

Andrew Liebel
What is the consensus on where Andrew Liebel from LBSU is going to go, Is he a guy who might be avialable in the second round for us or is he more a sandwich/early second round guy. He is in BA’s most recent weekend preview and has only 15 walks on the season
by VanillaGorilla on May 15, 2008 11:55 AM EDT 0 recs
Not sure the consensus
But here’s a scouting report and clip of Liebel. I am not a pitching delivery expert but, I intuitively know what i like and he just doesnt LOOK great but he MIGHT be a guy to look at in round 5. He certainly throws strikes and gets good results.

in round FIVE?
He won’t be there.
I understand a little concern about the over-the-top-ness but delivery seems to be over-emphasized here if you are dropping a 2nd-3rd round talent there.
If Liebel’s velo increase (from 87-91 last year to 90-93 this year) is real he could be a great pick. I usually like the risky high-upside guys but Liebel is such smart, big-game pitcher with solid stuff. He has been a remarkably effective pitcher this year, and his stuff has improved enough for his results to be legit and he has been a go-to pitcher who has come up with big games and shutouts against the toughest teams LBSU has played.. like Rice or UCLA

I didn't...
...meen to dismiss him so lightly. The clip above was the first time I’d seen him and sometimes you make a quick evalaution based on instinct with a clip. Perhaps i should consider him with pick #66 but again he just doesnt look like a major leaguer to me. i havent looked at everyone yet but I think I might like him more if he were there with our 98th choice.
You have a more comprehensive knowledge of the College game so maybe you have a better feel right now for the quality of the depth of players available. I’m actually just sort of brushing up on a lot of guys I haven’t followed and learning a lot. 5th round was too low on Liebel though, Sometimes you look at a guy and say that he’ll be overdrafted and just forget about him. Not saying this is the case with Liebel but maybe

Here's another mock draft...
It’s only been two rounds so far. I drafted for the M’s and picked Ike Davis and Daniel Webb. I think I popped Davis too early, but Webb was a good bargain.
Here’s the link…

As the Mariners “scouting director” for John’s Mock Draft the past two seasons, I’m excited to be an observer this year. Good luck!
