MiLB Mock Draft Pick 23: San Diego
Davis wins, and I think that is as good as pick as any at that position. Now we have the Padres who really have a system that has some real pop at the top with guys like Antonelli and Headley, but thins out quickly. They could use offensive guys that could rise quickly, but with Ike Davis going the pick before there doesn't seem to be a guy that really fits that bill. A guy like Allan Dykstra would make sense, but this is too much of a stretch right here. So, I think that they have to go with the value pick here.

wouldn't danks be a ridiculous overdraft in this slot?
this isn’t 2005. is this guy even a top 50 pick anymore?

Oh yeah. He hasn’t been spectacular in college but he’s been solid, and the tools look great. He’s got a solid contact bat with discipline, speed, and the ability to play a nice CF. If somebody figures out how to get more power out of him then he’s a great pick. If they can’t, then what he offers is still going to be good enough to be worth a pretty high pick. It’s not a real good year for college OFs, and most of the rest of the crop have more questions than Danks and/or can’t play CF.
Besides . . .I hope you realize that he’s got to be one of the top 3-4 guys (maybe the top guy?) that Kenny Williams is targeting at No. 8. Kenny’s wanted the kid for years, won’t have a prayer of getting him at No. 86, and is most likely thinking that he’ll sign very easily about two minutes after he’s picked. At No. 8 the Sox could probably get him signed to a below slot deal . . .this sounds way too much like everything that Kenny would want for this to not happen.

contact bat
i just don’t see it. he doesn’t have power, and i don’t think he will hit for average either. he has never hit for average in college, and he has had some pretty big strikeout totals in the past as well. if you watch him, his swing just isn’t very good. yeah he will play a good centerfield and yeah he is a smart base stealer, but he is a major reach at any point in the first round let alone 8th overall. ken williams may really like him, but he’s not that stupid.

Do not underestimate Kenny Williams....
never ever ever.
See Juan Uribe
Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
