MOD Pittsburgh
Looking to how others are thinking for the Pirates draft.
I am returning as the Pirates director from last season and hope to improve on an average draft, yet that still appears to be better than the Littlefield and Creech version.
In Round one,I am leaning towards Pedro Alvarez or Tim Beckham, depending on the Tampa Bay choice, however I am open minded enough to listen to arguments for others.
Thanks for any ideas and interest!

Eric Hosmer
I’d take him ahead of Alvarez, assuming the Devil Rays take Tim Beckham.

take Alvarez
At this point, he’s a tick above all of the other position players. The only reason a team would pass on him is because of his bonus demands. He’d probably go to the Rays if he wasn’t represented by Boras. You don’t have that concern so he’s the obvious choice.

Good perspective,
but since the decision doesn’t have to be made tomorrow, I’d keep an eye on Buster Posey. He is my favorite—not only a great hitter who takes a lot of walks but a heck of an athlete and good defensively behind the plate.

Additionally.....
A bunch of guys are interesting this year. A couple may even be better than Alvarez when all is said and done, but which guys? Alvarez is a likely all-star caliber player even if he has to move to 1st. Sure you could take a chance and draft a guy like Skipworth, Posey or one of the Beckhams- I like all of them a lot- but if they have to move off position, their value plummets. Personally, I think it’s silly to pass up a Longoria type in hopes of catching lightning in a bottle.
IF you believe in his bat, that is.

Tough one
Gonna have to watch the Rays’ MOD. There’s a link to a poll of Rays’ fans. T.Beckham is leading by a decent margin, with Alvarez and Posey tied for 2nd.
I’ve been a little concerned about Beckham because, judging from what I’ve read, his bat, or at least his power, is mainly projection at this point. I’d like to get a hitter who’s a little less of a gamble, especially since the Pirates’ corner players are all going to disappear after next year, if they’re not traded first. I’d definitely go with Alvarez, but if he’s gone maybe Smoak, Gordon Beckham, or Posey.

What about Kyle Skipworth?
I don’t know a thing about him, and he is a high school guy, but John Sickles sounds really high on him on that high school hitters post.

2nd round
Any chance at Eric Thames from Pepperdine…I believe it is 45th overall?

Positional scarcity
Many think Alvarez will have to move across the diamond to 1B because of his size, etc. I’d take the younger, stronger-fielding Beckham. He should provide more flexibility with his glove.

I am
also kinda intrigued by Florida State’s Buster Posey.
But I am afraid that perhaps I (and the Pirates) may be just a bit position sensitive after the Wieters issue and may be midly reaching.
Unlike Mr.Littlefield,I almost over analyze things.ha ha

Can't ignore Smoak either
I think my top three is Posey, Alvarez, Smoak, but I can understand the interest in Tim Beckham.
Also, I was looking at Smoak’s stats and realized that his teammate-SS Reese Havens-looks really good on paper and I read that he is strong defensively. Could be a guy to keep an eye on for later rounds.
He is a junior, not sure if he would sign or if that matters to you very much.
He is currently hitting .357/.487/.633 with 53BB v. 38K in 278 plate appearances.

Right now
I am kind of leaning Beckham.
Alvarez is with Boras, which does not matter to me,but it could to the Bucs.
Alvarez is easily the safer pick, but the this team has played it safe for so long and it would be nice to see them gamble on greatness for a change.
Not that I am saying Beckham will be great!

Bucs fan laying it straight
Count Vertigo:
Alright man, here is the deal. The Pirates have it down to 2 players Beckham or Alvarez. It is word that they are really leaning and wanting Alvarez. He is built for PNC Park. His defense is no where near as bad as people say, and his body style could a be a little like Miguel Cabrera. But if he keeps his hard work going he wont have to move. I have scouted and watched most of these players, read everything that has been written. Alvarez is the best player in this draft. He broke the hamate bone and is still pushing at the end of the year, and he is only going to get stronger as the healing process continues.
I am not sold on Beckham. I dont like projecting power when he doesnt show much of it at the high school level. Yes he will grow and get bigger and stronger but the power just hasnt been on display. I think you need that when your talking about the 1 or 2 picks in the draft.
The Pirates will select Alvarez if he is there. They want to make the big splash to show the fans that they are in this for the best player no matter what the cost. They lost so much with the Moskos selection last year.
As far as your later rounds? Look for them to add a big bat that might slip in the draft. Or a power arm that is a starter.
Brett Wallace, Riccio Torrez, Cody Satterwhite, Tyson Ross, Zach Putnam, Petey Paramore, Michael Palazzone, Jake Odorizzi, Alex Meyer, Tim Melville, Ethan Martin, Brett Marshall, Kyle Long, Brett Lawrie, Tyler Ladendorf, Casey Kelly, D.J. Hicks, Reese Havens, Trey Haley, Anthony Gose, Isaac Galloway, Danny Espinosa, Cutter Dykstra, Allan Dykstra, Ike Davis, Brandon Crawford, Jason Castro.
That is my list to look for in the 2nd round on. Those are all players who would have great value after round 1.
Hope this helped!

2-3 rounds
Taking the offensive player they like in the 1st round makes the best power arm available in 2nd round my choice. Stephen Fife,Chris Carpenter or Robbie Ross. If no real power arms are there in 2nd I would go offense again with James Darnell, Logan Forsythe or Shane Peterson.
