MOD: Minnesota Twins

The Twins will have 7 picks in this mock draft with 3 of them coming in the top 31 picks:

1st round- 14th overall

1st round- 27th overall

Sandwich round- 31st overall

2nd round- 60th overall

3rd round- 92nd overall

4th round- 126th overall

5th round- 156th overall

According to John Sickels, the Twins top 20 prospects include: 14 pitchers, 6 hitters(2 OFers, 1 SS, 2 3B, 1 1B).  But that was before adding 3 solid pitchers and a hitter in the Santana trade

I think BPA is the way to go.  If a pitcher is the best pick at 14, then we've still got two more early picks to go get hitters.  Lets just discuss pick 14 for now and then I'll post a MOD #2 for picks 27 and 31.

I hate this 14 pick!

A team that needs hitting in the system, and in a big way. Hopefully a hitter falls early…Alonso? Skipworth? or at least a pitcher other than those above although Martin is at least intriguing. Can Zach Collier still be there at 27?

Collier and Weeks

I think we can get Collier at 27 or maybe 31. He and Ike Davis are two of my favorites at those picks.

With Weeks, do the Twins need another future leadoff man? They have Carlos Gomez in the majors and Ben Revere on his way in the minors.
I might try to get a better OBP guy like Conor Gillaspie at 27 or 31 to be a #2 hitter behind Gomez. The only thing I worry about with Gillaspie is that he only walked 16 times last year. I’m looking for a Dustin Pedroia type that will put up a .380 OBP in the 2 hole.
Plus should we draft a 2nd baseman at 14? Gillaspie profiles to be a 2nd baseman and could be around at 27 or 31. Maybe we should get a power hitter like Wallace at 14 and a 2nd baseman later on.
I think Wallace is going to rake in the pros. I think there is also a chance he could stay at 3rd base. Some say he has a pretty good arm and he hasn’t done poorly there this year. Even if he can’t stay at 3rd, the DH spot wouldn’t be bad for a hitter like Wallace. The Twins need guys who can produce runs. Wallace does that.

Wallace

sounds like a pretty good player. Hopefully he will be able to stay at 3B. Otherwise, is he more of a corner OF or a centerfielder? I have brought this up to people on the Twins board and I wonder what others think. What about taking Josh Fields with the 14th? I have read that he is projected to move to the majors fast and he could be the future closer after Nathan is gone. Plus, it doesn’t look like the Twins have much for relief pitchers in the minors; Ward, Delaney, Salma(sp)? Besides Ward, the other two are still a good time away and the Twins bullpen has been struggling this year. But, I agree with that our #1 need is a power bat. College, not High School for god sakes!!!!!!!!

Fields

Not sure what to think about Fields at 14. If Wallace isn’t there, he may be the pick, but there’s a lot of good relievers in this draft. None as good as Fields, but there are some good ones. I might take a chance on a guy like Josh Lindblom in the 3rd round.
I’m still thinking Brett Wallace, Ike Davis or Zach Collier at 14.

Alright

So this is kinda what I’m thinking with the picks

14:
Brett Wallace-3B
Christian Friedrich-SP
Brett Lawrie-3B/C (lots of helium)
Zach Collier-OF (ditto)
Joshua Fields-RP
Ike Davis-OF

27:
Ike Davis-OF
Conor Gillaspie-3B/2B
Jemile Weeks-2B
Brett DeVall-SP
Ryan Perry-RP
Reese Havens-SS

31:
Tanner Scheppers-SP (lets take the risk if he’s here)
Jemile Weeks-2B
Brett DeVall-SP
Ryan Perry-RP
Reese Havens-SS
Issac Galloway-OF

60:
Tyler Ladendorf-SS
Tyler Stovall-SP
Nick Maronde-SP
James Darnell-3B
Jordy Mercer-SS/RP
Aaron Shafer-SP

92:
Jordan Danks-OF
Chris Dominguez-3B
Zack Cox-3B
Brad Hand-SP
Josh Lindblom/Kyle Weiland-RP
Lonnie Chisenhall-3B

Obviously some of those guys won’t be around at those picks, but if they are, I’d have no problem snatching them up.
And those lists are still more of a rough draft. I plan on doing a lot of work with this tomorrow.
