MOD: Mets
OK Mets fans, here are our picks:
18.
22.
33.
68.
100.
134.
164.
I'm open to any suggestions, and I'll probably poll you guys for those first few picks as far as who we want to target. And, I may post something over at the SB Nation Mets fan site Amazin' Avenue as well. It will maybe be less hectic over there, and we'll be able to get more Met fan feedback.
Also, mtk52983 has volunteered as Assistant Scouting Director. So if I'm not available on draft day, he can pick, or if a new board needs to be made, or some such, that's fine too.
Finally, I did run one of these before, back in 2005. I wanted to draft Brandon Snyder. My team wanted Jacoby Ellsbury. We drafted Ellsbury. Ellsbury is now tearing up the majors and playing a great CF, while Snyder has been moved to 1B and is struggling in A ball. So if I have any bad ideas, pleas do your best to talk me out of them.
Thanks,

We could get three really good relievers in the first round
Hey guys, how about we get Josh Fields, Andrew Cashner, and Bret Hunter with our first round picks?
Just kidding…

No Josh Fields please
Nothing against Josh Fields, but enough with the relief pitchers (that’s aimed at the real Mets, not you). I’d love to see some upside with the first two picks. If we happen to grab one or two of the college first basemen (I have to imagine some of the Cooper, Davis, Dykstra types will last into the Sandwich and second rounds), I wouldn’t mind giving them a shot.

Fields
Fields probably deserves to be ranked around the other guys listed. But I didn’t even put him in the poll because it’s not a big need.

No Relievers
I would love to see Alonso fall to 18, and I would take him there for sure. If Cole is available I would take him.
Here’s my board (for guys with a chance of falling):
Alonso, Martin, Cole, Gillaspie, Wallace, Davis, Castro. I don’t see Friedrich falling.
If we can’t get Alonso at #18 I would go with Ethan Martin. If Cole falls to 22 I would probably take him, but I’d be fine with Gillaspie, Wallace, or Davis. I’m hoping we can get one of Davis or Castro at 33.

Alonso
If Alonso falls I have to take him.
Castro is a guy I listed a week ago in the Twins mock thread as a guy who I would target at 33. I hadn’t seen him ranked that high before, but the next day, he was at #27 on the BA draft tracker, and now Allan Simpson has him at #18. There are a lot of college bats there I like though so I guess one will survive.
I’m less sure at this point on the pitching. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to see video on all of these guys before the draft. The HS pitching seems to be pretty volatile as far as who really is worthy that high. Hopefully there’s one I really like there.

I'm not sure...
but arent Evans and Carp good enough to be the first at 1B. I think my Mets need Starting Pitching badly… I would definately consentrate on getting SP early.

Maybe
Evans or Carp might be enough, and they might sign Teixeira. But if a good bat falls just because there’s so many 1B, I think I might take it just for the value there.
The Mets aren’t in such bad shape with SP either. Maybe that depends on if they sign Perez. But Santana, Maine, and Pelfrey will probably be in the rotation for awhile. They could certainly use one or two more though.
Really 3B and SS are the only thing they don’t need, yet those are often guys who can move to other positions as well. They could even use another outfielder. Beltran is 31 and you’ll need to replace him in a few years. So I’ll probably go for a balanced approach. Maybe both a pitcher and a hitter with the first 2 picks, but I’ll be flexible.

+1
The only area’s we dont need to attack are on the left side of the infield. Personally Id like to see the Mets start to draft guys with tools and allow their coaches to help push the players along. So far it seems to have worked with F-Mart. So, Id say lets draft Cole if he’s there at 18 and then grab another bat with 24. With the 24th I wouldnt mind seeing the Mets nab Castro or Havens. Im leaning more towards Havens and then trying to convert him to second? A fall back in this position would be to draft Wallace and let things play out with the rea life team later.
Obviously I cant see Weeks lasting to us at 18 but if he is there, then definately nab him without thinking twice about it.

Needs
The Mets seriously need some impact bats in the organization. I’d concentrate on that with maybe one starting pitcher in the early rounds.

I probably will
I think some of the college pitching I like will be there in rounds 2-3. There’s a couple of guys who had off years but have stuff and project well. I’ll probably grab a couple of elite bats up top. But I may grab a top HS arm as well, depending on what falls.

I would kill if the Mets got Brett Wallace. Weeks would be good too, but I really like Wallace.

Wallace
Do not get me wrong – Wallace is intriguing, but I am just concerned about picking him at #18 when there is likely to be bettter pitching talent available and this draft has a number of 1B who are late 1st/supplemental 1st Round picks

The pitching hasn’t really seperated that much for me either.
If there’s an arm I like at 18-22, I’ll grab it. But right now I don’t really have a strong preference between the HS arms (Martin, Cole, Odorizzi) and college arms (Ross, Perry). So there may someone I like there whose likely to be there at 33 as well.
And there are a couple of good college arms that had slightly off years and will fall farther than they should, to rounds 2 & 3. So I’m probably grabbing one arm in the top 3, but 2 bats. It’s going to be harder to find the bats later on.
