Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

MOD: Cardinals

Well everyone I'm back again this year in charge of the Cardinals.  This is the highest draft pick since the Cardinals also had the 13th pick back in 2000.  Let's hope this one works out a lot better than that ill fated selection.

Here are the picks we have this year (according to baseball america)

13.

39.

59.

91.

125.

155.

I would really like to get a position player, but unfortunately it just doesn't look like it is stacking up that way at 13 this year.  I guess Yonder Alonso or Eric Hosmer could possibly fall, and while they wouldn't be ideal could be a good value.  Unfortunately guys like Alvarez, both Beckham's, Posey, and Skipworth should be gone.  I am also not a big fan of Hicks, so I don't think I would consider him here when you can get a similar toolsy guy in the sandwich round.

I am sure the Cardinals have college pitchers on the top of their board with guys like Tanner Scheppers, Shooter Hunt, and Christian Friedrich leading the pack, but it is possible all 3 of those guys could be gone.  The question then becomes what do you do next?

The Cardinals haven't taken a high school pitcher in the first round in a long time, but this year the 13th pick could come up and every high school pitcher could still be on the board.  My question for you guys is which high school pitcher is the best, and do you think they are worth the 13th selection?

Also, can anyone think of any guys they like for the later rounds?

I'd probably say Martin's ceiling more than any of them

but I’d feel safest and best overall w/Odorizzi. But I suppose you might’ve guessed I would say that.

Amaury translates into "Punisher of Spheroids" in the lost tongue of Atlantis. Marti means "Belgian Waffle."

Here we are again

Good stuff. Can you pull a Kozma out of a hat again this year, FGC?

My only comment on the lead post is that I don’t think it’s a good idea to only analyze the guys likely to be at #13. Porcello might not have fallen as far as he did last year if a few teams in the high teens / low 20’s had analyzed him enough to see if his price would be worth it. Never know how the guys on here will surprise us, too.

top guys

i have the top guys ranked as well and will grab one if they fall, but i just think it is hard to expect people that don’t actually have to worry about signing players to let them slide.

as for the kozma pick, we’ll see. i would have had dave kopp too if the guys i did take in the 2nd round wouldn’t have fallen. he was a guy i was targeting in the 2nd round heading into the draft, but two guys i had as sandwich rounders (and two guys that did indeed go in the sandwich round) fell to my picks in the 2nd.

Thoughts

I don’t think the Cardinals take a chance on Scheppers injury with this high of a pick. He falls.

If Friedrich is there take him. Solid pick. Safe pick. Fills a need to boot.
I’m thinking Alonso at #13 also. Grab the bat. Trade him later if he can’t play elsewhere.

As far as HS pitchers are concerned: Its between Hicks, Martin, and Melville. Not so much the other guys in my mind. Hicks as a hitter, though.
