MOD - Los Angeles Dodgers
With no compensation picks this year, the Dodgers have 5 selections in the first 5 rounds. Here are the Dodgers' picks through the 5th round:
Round 1 - Pick 15
Round 2 - Pick 61
Round 3 - Pick 93
Round 4 - Pick 127
Round 5 - Pick 157
Over the past 6 years, Logan White has focused mainly on HS pitchers in the first round. But I'm not opposed to college players or hitters, given the right skillset. I'm just looking for the BPA. I'd like to hear some opinions on the possible directions we could go with the 15th pick.

Wallace
How would you compare his bat to Matt LaPorta’s?

comparison
He is more athletic but doesn’t have as much power as Laporta, He is more of a pure hitter who will strike out less. He is just a hitting machine.

Wallace
Ok, thanks for your input. I’ll take some time to compare him with other possibilities at #15.

Do you think he will be available that late? If he is, I agree that’s the pick to make.

Aaron Hicks
I would love Aaron Hicks at 15. With the graduations of Kemp and Ethier, the organization is tapped out as far as OF prospects go. If the Dodgers had a rash of injuries at the OF position, the first guy called up would be Jason Repko or Xavier Paul, kind of a scary thought!
I think we have done a good job of stockpiling power HS arms and with the 15th pick would look to grab a toolsy position player. Hicks fits that mold and really does seem like a Logan White pick.
I don’t think the Dodgers have a lot of great bats in the system, I would say Lambo has the most promising one. Wallace who I have seen a lot of would be a solid pick, but I like the upside that Hicks brings to the table.

in regards to lambo
if character means anything to the dodgers lambo will never see the majors. which is sad cause he really could be James Loney part II. he will prob be trade bait for a vet.
i know a friend of his and he has not changed his ways just gotten better at hiding them.

Hicks
I’m iffy on Hicks due to his offensive floor. He has considerable upside but he could turn out to be another Corey Patterson. Logan White generally likes polished HS bats in the 1st (Loney, DeWitt) and was burned when he took a toolsy athlete in Mattingly. So Hicks is on my list, but he’s not at the top.

Tim Melville
he is my pick if available. fits the mold of what the dodgers want. projectable with command
COMP: James McDonald?
by jeph on May 14, 2008 9:14 PM EDT 0 recs
Melville
Currently at the top of my list. I’m not sure if he compares to McDonald, since I think Melville should definitely have more consistent velocity down the road. His fastball has been creeping back as the spring has wore on so I’m not concerned with it long term. If he can tighten up his curve and develop his change over the next few years, he’d be a great arm to go along with guys like Billingsley, Kershaw, McDonald, Morris, etc.

Zack Collier
^my second round pick. think Matt Kemp with less raw power.
or
Kyle Lobstein
easy delivery, a lefty withrow

2nd Round
I’m a fan of Collier’s but I don’t think he’ll last til the 2nd round and I think the 15th pick might be a little too early for him. And comparing any HS hitter to Matt Kemp is lofty praise, since Kemp is such a freak athlete. Regardless, he doesn’t figure to last long enough for us to have a shot at him.
Lobstein is a guy I think Logan White is following very closely. The Withrow comp is spot on, given his athleticism, arm action and projection. He’s a guy I’d think about in the 2nd round.
Another guy I like for the 61st pick is Harold Martinez. He’s really struggled this spring but I have faith in his ability to bounce back and become a legit power hitter. Are there any other prospects you guys are thinking about in the 2nd round?

2nd Round
What about Tylre Sample? 6’7 HS pitcher with a mid 90’s fastball and the plus breaking pitch that White looks for. Also, has a clean delivery but had TJ in 06. Or is he widely considered a later round pick?

Sample
Definitely a guy who I’d look at in the 2nd, though I think he’ll be off the board by then. He’s actually considered a sandwich pick right now, but if he slips then he’d be good value at #61.

Great list! If Skipworth’s there at #15, I’d jump on him. However, it’s almost a sure thing that he goes in the Top 10. Odorizzi was given to the Dodgers by Patrick Ebert (PGCC and Brewerfan.net) and he seems like a pretty good prospect, though I’d take Melville over him.
There should be some toolsy outfielders available in the 2nd. Galloway would be a nice pickup, even if he doesn’t stay in CF long term. Ladendorf is very intriguing as a potential 5 tool SS but I don’t figure he’ll last that long.
Torrez is a guy I really like and would jump on him in the 3rd. I’m not sure how signable he is but I love him as a potential offensive-minded 2B. Oropesa has fallen off the radar a bit and would be a good value pick.
As PGCC and Baseball America get into their draft coverage, we’ll have a better idea of who to look for in the 4th and 5th. But again, thanks for the in-depth post!
