MOD: Texas Rangers

Hey folks, a lot of the coverage and discussion will hopefully occur on Lonestarball as well, but here's a basic rundown of the draft and of where we stand as an organization going in.

The Rangers hold the following picks in our mock draft

Round 1: Pick 11

Round 2: Pick 57

Round 3: Pick 89

Round 4: Pick 123

In the last three years, the Rangers have drafted 4 High School pitchers (Main, Beaven, Kiker and Ramirez), two college outfielders (Borbon and Mayberry) and one college pitcher (Tommy Hunter) with their #1s. As a system, they've got pretty good depth all over the place, with some potential players that might become elite players, but generally, not one sure-fire blue-chip prospect in the system.

I still think that the biggest weakness(and that's a relative term) in the organization remains majors-ready pitching. That's why I'm predisposed to a college arm if it comes down to it. However, if someone great falls, we'll certainly have to consider it.

Post your thoughts and ideas, or head over to LSB and discuss there.

Alot of the mocks i have seen so far...

are all dependant on Houston before us. If Houston remain firmly attached to slotting system, there is a good possibilty that Hosmer could fall to #11. Scheppert or Smoak may be picked in front of Texas.

Hunt might be a good pick aswell. Best player avaliable regardlesson postion. But if based on equal grades i would rank the possibilties College postion player, HS postion player, college SP then HS SP.

Hunt

does the fact that he’s been drafted by the Rangers before help or hinder that selection?

I agree that the best possible scenario is for someone like Scheppers to slip past Houston, and I think people might be surprised of how willing McLane is to go overslot this year, considering he got raked over coals last year for sticking to the slotting system. If Drayton McLane is anything, it’s a public approval whore.

The other sides is...

McLane is also one of Seligs closest freinds and does not want to overstep Buds Authority.

Truthfully, I think the best idea might be a quick lonestar ball and newberg report wide event to try and flush out a decent draft board. Im less concerned with the1st round pick, than trying to determine the picks in the latter rounds. Should be a fun expreiment though.

Scheppers

Assuming Scheppers is available and Hosmer doesn’t fall to us at #11, it would be advantageous to draft a pitcher like Scheppers that can move through the system quickly. The Rangers still desperately need pitching and arms like Beavan, Main and Feliz are years away from making a contribution at the major league level.

I’ve said this before, but Scheppers reminds me (on paper) of Eric Hurley. Tall, projectable pitcher with a low/mid-90s fastball that has some sink. The makings of a plus slider with movement and a bulldog mentality on the bump.

Have you seen this?

A whole bunch of mocks, some of them pretty weird (Tim Beckham not going until round 2?) but interesting reading nonetheless.

...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

I say best player available.

If its a college pitcher great. If its a high school pitcher, okay then. However, the one area we should avoid is catcher this year. Just my opinion. There already is a log jam throughout the minors.

That's easy to do in the first few rounds

it’s the latter rounds that I’m worried about.

Hosmer/Melville or college guy

If you grab Hosmer or Melville with the first pick, try to go for a college pitcher and college outfielder with the next couple picks if you can. If you go college pitcher (Scheppers or Hunt) with the first pick, then I’d say go for the best outfielder available and a high school pitcher with the next couple picks.

Some post-1st round guys to look at, though I’m not quite sure where they’ll fall. Some may be sandwich picks. I don’t really know, other than I doubt they’ll be first rounders…

DISCLAIMER: I really don’t know what I’m talking about. So look up these guys before forming any solid opinions.

Kyle Lobstein (HS LHP): Projectable lefty pitcher with potential for three plus pitches. I like that his change-up is already a strong-average pitch. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/events/draft_report/y2008/index.jsp?mc=lobstein

Mike Colla (Arizona RHP): Not a frontline guy, but a safe pick in the 3rd if he’s still there. Consistent and polished. Could move quickly a la Tommy Hunter, but a similar ceiling I would imagine as well (i.e. mid-rotation/back-end).

Daniel Marrs (HS RHP): Big, strong, projectable hard thrower with poor command. A project guy. Doubt he’ll last longer than the 2nd round, but only take him if you get a safe 1st round pick like Scheppers. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/events/draft_report/y2008/index.jsp?mc=marrs

Jarret Martin (HS LHP): Fastball at 87-90 mph. More of a pitchability guy, but a pretty good one. Probably similar to Matt Harrison, although maybe I’m just generalizing lefty pitchability guys. Still, that profile works for Arlington, and maybe he gains some arm strength as he matures. Probably a 2nd rounder, but if he last til the 3rd, take him.

Nick Maronde (HS LHP): Projectable lefty with a plus fastball and chance for two other pitches. Trouble repeating delivery, which results in poor command on occasion. Won’t last past the 2nd. Might go in the sandwich round. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/events/draft_report/y2008/index.jsp?mc=maronde

T.J. Steele (Arizona OF): Hits for average and power with some speed as well. Haven’t heard much about him, but Scout.com says he’ll need a good season to be taken in the first two rounds. Sounds like a good pick in round 3 if he’s there. See if you can find out more about him though.

Mike Bianucci (Auburn OF): Toolsy outfielder with speed and “light tower raw power” but it doesn’t seem that it has all translated just yet. Would be a gamble in the 2nd, solid in the 3rd, and a good pick in the 4th, I think.

Robbie Ross (HS LHP): Somewhere between Zach Phillips and Kasey Kiker, it sounds like. 2nd or 3rd round. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/events/draft_report/y2008/index.jsp?mc=rross

Roger Kieschnick (Texas Tech OF): 5-tool right fielder that reminds scouts of Mark Teahen. Take him if he’s there in the 2nd round. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/events/draft_report/y2008/index.jsp?mc=kieschnick

Austin Wood (HS RHP): Big, projectable righty with his fastball right now at 92, but will likely throw harder as he develops. Works too much off of his fastball right now, so he’ll probably last until rounds 3-5. Goes to the same high school as Brett DeVall. For some reason, I really like this guy. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/events/draft_report/y2008/index.jsp?mc=wood

Other dudes to keep in mind…

Scott Silverstein (HS LHP): 2nd or 3rd
Andy Burns (HS INF): 2nd or 3rd
Ryan Flaherty (Vandy INF): 2nd or 3rd
Logan Forsythe (Arkansas OF): 3rd or 4th
Tim Murphy (UCLA LHP): 2nd
Ryne White (Purdue 1B/OF): 2nd or 3rd

And that’s my contribution. I think you’ll probably need to fork over the money for Baseball America to prep for this thing. The draft reports on milb.com are good and free, though it doesn’t really give you a good idea on where they’re likely to be picked. Good luck.

apparently

I looked at some rankings from Keith Law and BA, and Lobstein, Maronde, Ross, Kieschnick, Forsythe, and Murphy all seem to project as sandwish-2nd round picks. Out of those, I’d personally rank them like this…

Pitchers: Lobstein, Maronde, Ross, Murphy (with Lobstein and Murphy being the safest bets)
Hitters: Kieschnick, Forsythe (I still wouldn’t go for Forsythe until round 3)
