MOD: Padres
With 8 picks in the five round mock, we’ve got a chance to make a big impact on a system that hasn’t been good for quite awhile.
San Diego has:
23.
42.
46.
69.
101.
111.
135.
165.
I’m going to attempt to avoid the Boras guys. San Diego has gone college-heavy in recent drafts and I’ll take that into account, but I generally tend toward the high school side.
I guess in the first MOD we should talk about the first round pick and what direction we should go there. Specifically, what do we think about the two-way players (Hicks, Martin, Kelly)? Hitter or pitcher and where does each fit in?
Throw out any other names you like at 23 (and say why, ideally). Also, the deputy position is currently wide open.

#23 and #42
At #23 if Hicks, Martin, Kelly are there you have to pick one of them.

Mock Draft: May 16 … BA takes first stab at first round By Jim Callis
23. PADRES. There will be no polished college pitchers for San Diego to choose from, unless California righthander Tyson Ross’ recent outings have turned its head. Plan B will be an advanced college bat. Wake Forest’s Allan Dykstra is a local product, and ASU’s Davis and Cal’s Cooper would be two other first basemen to consider. Davis has the most athleticism and a chance to play the outfield, so that could be the tiebreaker.
Projected Pick: IKE DAVIS.
... several names to consider.

Hitter ...
On the question of “hitter” vs “pitcher” ... I’d say “hitter” ... and lean towards OF, but position is less important …
I say that because I think the Padres farm system is OK with pitchers … I’m still optimisitic that Carillo and Hensley and Schmidt will all return to health and prospect status … and I think between LeBlanc and Geer and several other apparently-low-ceiling guys there is some depth.
Even at #23, perhaps the “take the best player available” approach is still applicable and best … can never go wrong taking the best player available :-) But I gotta believe that by #23, the talent has leveled out such that noise / margin of error in talent evaluation makes it so that “drafting for need” doesn’t cost/hurt/risk too much …

And prior to thinking about a draft, I think it’s always good to refresh by looking back at a draft from a few years ago …
