MOD - White Sox

Well, the moment for which Sox fans have been waiting since 1990(!): a pick lower than #12. The Sox farm system is extremely thin - ranked last or next to it by almost all commentators. What should Kenny Williams do with the #8 pick to attempt to breathe some life back into it?

And, due to a rather unfortunate free agent signing and a refusal to let a certain aged player go (but i digress), the Sox will not pick again until #86. So feel free to list any sleepers of which we should be aware.

Please...

Find someone with some upside. No more bums like Kyle McCulloch or Larry Broadway. Can we get either Beckham here?

upside

you are probably going to have your pick of tanner scheppers and shooter hunt. if you want upside, those two have plenty of it.

any left-handed fireballers?

kenny can’t say no!

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

BPA

Always have to go with the best player available with a top 10 pick.

Plus, the White Sox have so many need areas that it doesn’t really matter which position the pick plays. It’s going to be a need area.

Personally, I like the idea of the Sox going with one of the “second-tier” college SP’s… someone like Scheppers or Hunt. That being said, Posey or Skipworth would be very tough to pass up if either one is still sitting there at #8.

best hitter available

Kenny Williams seems to do a better job of trading for starting pitchers rather than drafting them, so grab the best hitter available. I’d like to see either one of the catchers or Gordon Beckham if he falls.

The nice thing about picking so high

is that you can make yourself a little top 8 and know that at least one of those guys will fall to ya there

white sox draft board

i haven’t given this the greatest of thought but please critique/add/subtract/whatever. this is the order of players, if available, i would draft at #8

1. buster posey

4. justin smoak
5. kyle skipworth

looks good

I’d add hosmer and alonso after 5

hosmer maybe

he would be #9, probably. way too soon for alonso, though.

when I asked john

he said “I’d rate them Alonso, Smoak, Hosmer myself.”

but now that I think it I don’t know based on what criteria
is alonso ahead of hosmer because he has a better bat or because he will need less development time?

john, can you chime in please? anyone else?

We need a hitter

Posey, Tim Beckham and Alvarez will not be there. If Matusz is there and Smoak isn’t you have to take him IMO but that probably won’t happen. I don’t like G Beckham but that’s up to you. You have to consider Brett Wallace and Alonso if Smoak isn’t available.

say whaaat?

Wallace over Gordon Beckham?

there's been a concern aired in some circles

that g. beckham won’t stick at SS. i like his bat enough that it doesn’t concern me too much for picking at #8. wallace and alonso are not quite as good but to each his own. all input is helpful.

Long Time Sox Fan Here

There have been a ton of rumors about Wallace and the White Sox. I like Wallace, but I’d only take him if Smoak, GBeckham, Crow, Matusz, and Skipworth were all gone. Also, if you want to be realistic, you can throw out any Boras client.

Probably our biggest need is a big bat with Dye, Thome, and Konerko all past their primes. Someone like Smoak would be the most ideal fit. However, it is tough to resist picking potential top of the rotation guys like Crow and Matusz. If either of those pitchers are there at 8, I say take them. But those are the only 2 pitchers in this draft worth no. 8. Scheppers, maybe, but he’s injured, and Hunt doesn’t really wow me.

My Big Board would be:

1a. Crow/Matusz/Alvarez/TBeckham/Posey
-This is wishful thinking here, as all 5 of these players will likely be gone come no. 8. The one with the best chance of making it to 8 is Crow, but I find it tough to see the Reds passing on him.

1b. Justin Smoak
-Fills a big hole with arguably the best hitter in the draft. Shouldn’t have to spend too much time in the minors, and can replace one of Konerko or Thome, whoever leaves first.

2. Gordon Beckham
-A pick like this might finally put an end to Juan Uribe in a White Sox uniform. I’m not a huge fan of his, but it’s been a long time since the White Sox had a middle infielder worth a damn. Could come up and produce quickly.

3. Kyle Skipworth
-I’d prefer a college bat here, but catcher is a big need as well as a bat for the middle of the lineup, and Skipworth can fill at least one, if not both, of those needs. I think he can stick at catcher.

I would go on, but there’s no need as I have mentioned 8 players, so that means at least one has to be there at 8. If I did go on, I’d rank Wallace ahead of Alonso.
