MOD Reds

Hey Reds fans,

We have a lot of blue chip prospects in our minors and majors but we still need to draft more potential impact players if we are going to turn this team into a modern day Big Red Machine.  Post your suggestions of what positions and players you think we should be targeting.

Also, I am looking for an assistant GM so let me know if you are interested.  I will be back later on tonight to post some players I am hoping are available at our draft position.  Lets find some more pieces to join the likes of Votto, Bailey, Bruce, and Cueto!!!

College Player

I think drafting a college player that can move quickly makes a lot of sense with the first pick. I don’t follow HS and college kids enough to give input on who to pick and if there’s some HS kid that you think is an ultra elite talent, you take him but all things being equal, I’d draft a guy that’s got a chance to play with all that young talent.

Best Player Available

Odds are the Reds go with a player up the middle on the defensive spectrum if they go with a positional player over a pitcher, that just seems to be where Buckley goes. I don’t think they would go catcher again, but pitcher or shortstop is where I think they may be leaning. With them not having a second round pick I think they will make their pick count and take the best guy on the board. Who that is yet, I don’t know but if its a pitcher, bet your bottom dollar it will be a tall right hander.

Agreed 100%

I am a firm believer in taking the best player available. Are you interested in being an assistant GM doug?

don't have the time

Would love to…. just don’t have the time on my plate for it right now. I don’t really know when I can get to the computer these days until after 11 every night.

Pick #7

We have a great opportunity to nab a potential star with this early round pick. My philosophy is to take the best player available although I must admit that I prefer the safety of hitters to pitchers. The following are some players I am considering:

Alonso, and Smoak – Both have potential impact bats that are close to the majors but are potentially blocked down the road by Votto. Should this impact our rankings?
Hosmer – High upside but a high school bat will take time to develop. Is he worth the wait?
Gordon Beckham – Beckham has leaped up the draft charts with his outstanding season. Appears to have the ability to stay at short. Could be the future starting shortstop the Reds.
Friedrich, Hunt, Melville, and Scheppers – I think a team can never have enough pitching but I would really need to be sold on a guy to take him this early. Who does everyone think is the best available arm if Crow and Matusz are off the table?

hmm

I don’t think Votto would stop them from taking Smoak or Alonso, as Votto could play some left field for a while if one of those two guys was beating the door down.
Hosmer seems to be a no chance guy to me given what he has reportedly been asking for. Just can’t see the Reds meeting those demands.
Beckham is the guy I think they will take if he is on the board. He fits the Buckley profile. Up the middle guy with lots of tools.
I pray that the Reds don’t have a chance to take Crow. His mechanics frighten me big time. I would love to see him off the board when we pick. Wouldn’t mind Matusz being there though. Scheppers and Hunt are ahead of Friedrich and Melville for me. I would put Melville ahead of Friedrich just based on his upside, where I think Friedrich has a lower ceiling. Given that Friedrich is a lefty though, I tend to think the Reds stay away from him.
