The Yankees are preparing for the annual draft. They've done well in recent years with Joba, Hughes and Ian Kennedy. Thankfully the farm system is stronger than it has been in years, perhaps since George purchased the team in the mid-70's. We look to continue to build on such.

If you have any recommendations, feel free to post them here!

The Bombers have the 28th and 40th selections in the opening round.

Baseball America

Here’s some players BA expects to be taken around the 28th slot.

Andrew Cashner, RHP – Texas Christian
Ryan Perry, RHP – Arizona
Reese Havens, SS – S. Carolina
Jason Castro, C – Stanford (They drafted two C’s in the top 5 rds last season)
Brett Devall, LHP – HS – Florida
Daniel Webb, RHP – HS – Kentucky
Ike Davis, 1B/OF – Arizona State

Prospects that intrique me

I really think Casey Kelly – SS is at the top of my list. I think he could still be there at #28. I also like Andrew Cashner – P at that spot as well.

Kyle Long, Alex Meyer and Xavier Avery also are guys I think could be possibilities at #40, but Avery may not even decide to play baseball. This is where it’s tough to judge. Could a team convince him baseball is the right choice? Obviously he has tremendous potential.

Pitching is what wins championships. It’s so much easier to pick the next Brien Taylor than a Jake Peavy.

by batonball on May 12, 2008 6:22 PM EDT   0 recs

Is there a chance Kelly falls

to pick 40, or is he an assured late 1st, early supplemental?

by demondeaconsbaseball on May 15, 2008 9:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Kelly at 40

Should be there. After some research, his desire to remain a hitter, and the fact that he looks to be a star QB. I don’t even think he’s on my radar any longer. You won’t be able to sign him, and if you do you’ll be getting a suspect bat at best. He would be a bad pick.

by batonball on May 17, 2008 9:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

The Yankees could

They have the money. But at 40, we may be better off not.

by demondeaconsbaseball on May 17, 2008 9:34 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Gose

How about him?

by batonball on May 17, 2008 9:37 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Develop him as a hitter

That’s what he wants. He is a tremendous talent, one of the best atheletes in the draft.

by batonball on May 17, 2008 9:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Gose in the supplemental

Conor Gillaspie or maybe Sonny Gray. The more names for consideration the better.

by batonball on May 17, 2008 9:43 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Gose isnt bad

I;d prefer Gillespie, but that’s just me

by demondeaconsbaseball on May 18, 2008 11:35 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I like Gillepsie too!

He’s a sure thing. But Gose has that high ceiling, although comes with much more risk. With Conor you kinda know he’ll be a decent MLB player. Gose could end up being a bust, or make you look like a genius if he pans out.

This where you’d watch tape, get your scouting opinions from the scouts. Interview the coaches and player and so on.

by batonball on May 18, 2008 11:55 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

One more for Gillaspie

I think you might be underestimating Gillaspie’s upside. He could win batting titles in the future, worst case scenario he can be a utility guy playing first, third, and the OF. The guy was the MVP of the Cape League last summer proving he can hit with wood. Putting up a line of .345/.448/.673 in a notoriously pitcher friendly league is no small feat. I am very high on Gillaspie.

by Mike R. on May 19, 2008 1:05 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Gillaspie

I think to land him we’d have to take him at 28.

I don’t think he’ll last until 44. So do I take him over Ike Davis and Wallace, assuming one of them is still on the board at that point?

by batonball on May 19, 2008 5:28 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I say yes...

it’s just my opinion

by Mike R. on May 20, 2008 1:02 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

One for Gose

This kid is five times the athlete Gillespie is. Granted, he is raw. But we could be looking at the next Ricky Henderson or Tim Raines here folks.

Gillespie compares to Bill Mueller. And the Yankees have ARod, so there isn’t even a need

by Delino on May 19, 2008 8:31 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Gose - MRI

Might have arm troubles. Recently had an MRI on his “barking” left elbow.

Not a good sign.

by batonball on May 19, 2008 12:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Latest BA mock draft

12. A’s – Brett Wallace (No surprise – He’s a Money Ball dream)
17. Jays – Gillaspie
23. Padres – Ike Davis
Note: 19. Cubs – Casey Kelly
Destroying our shortlist. Leaving raw HS player Gose and the injured Sonny Gray

Prediction: Boras client: Lobstein (I guess the Yankees have a huge lack of Lefties in the system)

by batonball on May 19, 2008 11:22 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Wichita State third baseman Conor Gillaspie

He proved he can handle the wood bat on the Cape. I’m very high on him as a hitter because of that. He’s a very real consideration @ 28.

by batonball on May 12, 2008 6:32 PM EDT   0 recs

Not sure Meyer would make it to 40

in the mock, at least. I would definitely consider him at 28. Kelly is also very intriguing as a two-way prospect.

Sonny Gray

This kid looks like a tremendous talent. 96 MPH Heater and a big league curve ball. He can hit too! I saw a clip of him pitching and was just like…......wow!

The only concern is he has a small frame. He’s listed at 180 lbs, so he probably around 165. He’s still just a kid, so there’s room for growth.

He’s got first round talent. Size, or in Sonny’s case lack thereof, is the only issue.

by batonball on May 13, 2008 8:09 PM EDT   0 recs

Re: Sonny

Tough break for the kid. The signablility along with the injury have his stock sliding.

by batonball on May 15, 2008 2:36 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Response

I still think Gray seems like a great candidate to slide a bit in the real draft and then sign an out of the box deal. A team is probably going to have to go significantly over slot to get him anyways, so the ankle thing really doesn’t bother me – he’s probably going to be sitting on the sidelines anyways while a team waits to announce his signing.

The bigger question, IMO, is whether a team thinks he’s worth the money it’ll take to get him to sign. My guess is that somebody will offer him top 15 money to come on board . . .is that going to be enough to get the deal done?

by mrkupe on May 15, 2008 7:20 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Xavier Avery

I’ve dropped him from consideration. It appears football has stolen away another exciting prospect.

There has been some concern of the declining number of American Blacks in MLB. If you are wondering why take a look at football and basketball. There’s more than a handful of RB’s, WR’s, DB’s, Safeties, PG and SG’s who sure look like they have all the physical tools to be splendid baseball players.

Curses!

by batonball on May 14, 2008 9:41 AM EDT   0 recs

Anthony Gose, Aaron Hicks and Isaac Galloway.

These California kids are all highly touted. All three are potential 1st round selections and likely gone by the time the Yankees pick.

Gose wants to play OF instead of P, even though he throws 97 MPH. He wants to be the next Juan Pierre. Why? I’m not sure. However, he seems very determined so this could pose some problems for the team that drafts him. Is he even a 1st round talent as a hitter? Probably not.

Hicks is similar to Gose. Seems to be the better offensive option. He should leave the board in the middle of the 1st. Five-tool type.

Galloway is an OF. Considered slightly more advanced than Hicks as a hitter but not as high a ceiling. Safe pick. Should develop into a decent player. Mid-late 1st.

by batonball on May 14, 2008 10:29 AM EDT   0 recs

Why?

Because he wants to have fun?

by nms on May 15, 2008 2:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Re: Why?

I don’t blame him. He actually has the talent to be a Pierre type eventually.

It’s just not everybody is blessed with an arm like that, even Pierre wasn’t.

by batonball on May 15, 2008 2:34 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

"Even Pierre wasn't"

Ha.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 6:27 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Latest news

Hicks is the only sure 1st.

Gose and he desire to remain a hitter has seen his stock drop into the Supp. and beyond.

Galloway is also slipping – Not sure why.

by batonball on May 18, 2008 12:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

question

Both Gose and Galloway are slated to go in the Supp/2nd rounds?

by demondeaconsbaseball on May 18, 2008 1:49 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Maybe

Galloway looks to be a late 1st

Gose looks like a supp guy.

Who knows in real life.

by batonball on May 18, 2008 1:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

From SI

Note: This is looking at Gose as a pitcher. You draft him as that and you’ll lose him to Arizona. He wants to be a hitter.

Anthony Gose, LHP, Bellflower High (Bellflower, Calif.)

With a good fastball and breaking ball, Gose also has potential as an outfielder, but he’s extremely raw and could use a little more seasoning. Most likely a bullpen guy at the next level. He has signed with Arizona.

Prediction: Late first round pick

by batonball on May 18, 2008 4:25 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Organizational needs

Replacement for Giambi – I’m not a big fan of drafting a 1B, because what that usually means is the player is a defensive liability and ends up there because of it. I’d rather take a more athletic player, and move him to first if it’s the best fit for the organization. Free Agency might be the solution here anyways.

Pitchers, pitchers and more pitchers. A priority.

by batonball on May 14, 2008 10:53 AM EDT   0 recs

disagree

Respectfully. The Yanks have a lot of pitching prospects. What they need are solid position player prospects, especially C, SS, 1B (like you mentioned) and OF. Their pitching prospect depth is incredible, so I’d shy away from that if I were in charge of their board.

by demondeaconsbaseball on May 15, 2008 7:31 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Re: disagree

I agree with most of your thoughts, although with Jesus Montero and Francisco Cervelli they have some quality catchers on the farm. OF is certainly an area I’m looking at. Tabata and Jackson have struggled. And I’ve thought of Casey Kelly as a SS, but he’ll likely be gone. Ike Davis is also a consideration at 28.

You can never have enough quality arms, so If I see one I think is a bargain I’ll jump all over it. Picking was down the list at 28 makes it difficult to judge who and who won’t be there.

by batonball on May 15, 2008 7:41 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh definitely

If a good pitcher falls, you take him. Best player on the board and all. Still, a position player should be taken if a good one is present.

by demondeaconsbaseball on May 15, 2008 9:43 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Jose Tabata and Austin Jackson

After 35 games:
Tabata .231 AVG 0 HR 14 RBI
Jackson .273 AVG 0 HR 6 RBI

These guys are supposed to be the future. I’m just not completely sold. Virtually no power this season from either prospect.

by batonball on May 14, 2008 12:19 PM EDT   0 recs

Kyle Long & Destin Hood

Again football plays until the selection process. Long is interesting, but it would cost a whole lot of money to sign him and for him to back away from the free ride at Florida State. I think a college education is important to the Long family.

Hood has got his free ride at Alabama. And he gets to play both football and baseball. I don’t even think at this point the young man knows which one he’ll go with. If I had to guess…........football.

So if you’re going to select either, your organization better be prepared to “show them the money!”

by batonball on May 14, 2008 7:23 PM EDT   0 recs

HS Pitchers

Here’s a thought. If you don’t hit 95 MPH on the gun, I wouldn’t even consider drafting you.

by batonball on May 14, 2008 7:29 PM EDT   0 recs

I like the sound of Gray a lot

though he’s a guy who in the real draft we might be able to get later, by virtue of his Vandy commitment, small stature and injury this season. BTW, if we can get more people to recommend this thread, then we can get it on the recommended fanposts list, so it wont’ be stuck back here.

http://mvn.com/milb-yankees/

by lemonjello on May 15, 2008 10:14 AM EDT   0 recs

So you like Gray and Meyer

Any other suggestions? Anyone stand out? I guy you’d think would look good in pinstripes?

by batonball on May 15, 2008 11:02 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Sonny Gray's ankle

Broken about a month ago. It’s not a huge deal, but he’s falling fast on the draft boards. Including Sickels. lol

by batonball on May 15, 2008 1:25 PM EDT   0 recs

Meyer

Doesn’t look like he’s gonna be there for us at 28. Tyler Sample is interesting because he throws hard, but he has some control issues.

I might just take Sonny Gray, instead of reaching. He might not progress much this season because of the injury and the Yankees would need to look deeper at the injury. That’s not gonna happen in a mock draft, so I’ll assume he’ll be fine. lol

by batonball on May 15, 2008 1:31 PM EDT   0 recs

thedeamondeacons

might be right. Considering that pitching seems to be a strong point in the farm system, at least until the trading deadline. lol Perhaps we should focus on hitters. I really like Kelly and Davis, but is this because they had famous Yankee fathers? Could be.

I love Destin Hood as a ballplayer, he has great raw power and is off the charts as an athelete. But he’s a football player. I’d consider him with the 44th selection, but only if I could sign him. I’ll never know that. lol

As I’ve mentioned before I really like Conor Gillaspie – he’s gonna be a decent big leaguer. Him being a 3b doesn’t bother me. He could move to the OF if needed, I’d make sure he’d get at least some exposure there.

The college Beckman is awesome too. He also was get in the Cape League. He’ll be long gone though by the time the Bronx Bombers pick.

Open to suggestions on players. Anyone I’m overlooking? Of course there are. lol

by batonball on May 15, 2008 8:57 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd focus

on Ike Davis, Connor Gillespe and Casey Kelly. Davis can play 1B, Connor can be converted to RF, and Kelly may be a useful replacement for Jeter or at least a utility player (not sure how his bat/defense is).

by demondeaconsbaseball on May 15, 2008 9:48 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Answer to my question

http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/events/draft_report/y2008/index.jsp?mc=kelly

It’s Kelly’s bat that’s the problem. He’s good defensively and a decent pitcher too. But he’ll require big money to sign (going to Tennessee) and his bat might not play. There’s definitely some projection for him though; he projects to be pretty big (so maybe some power). Hopeuflly he’ll drop to 40 (where he’d be a great pick).

by demondeaconsbaseball on May 15, 2008 9:57 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Shortstops

I just don’t see one. It doesn’t look like a good crop this draft. Both Beckhams will be gone and they look like the only sure bets. Kelly has a suspect bat and a would be a hard sign, due to football. Havens projects to be a 3b. Am a missing someone?

Jose Duran - SS - Texas A&M

Leading hitter for the Aggies, junior college transfer.

Brother German is a prized prospect in Rangers system.

by batonball on May 19, 2008 10:12 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Danny Espinosa - SS - Long Beach State

.310 4 HR 31 RBI

Starting shortstop for Team USA in the summer of 2007.

One of a handful of freshmen to play in the Cape Cod League during the summer of 2006, playing for Chatham… ended the season batting .252 over 44 games, primarily as the starting shortstop

by batonball on May 19, 2008 12:44 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Shane Peterson - 1b-OF - Long Beach State

.397 7HR 48 RBI and a .509 OB% (Leading hitter on squad)

Named a starting all-star in the Cape Cod League in the summer of 2007 and was all-league as a utility player, ranking fourth in the league in hitting (.338), first in hits (52) and fifth in on-base percentage (.436)

by batonball on May 19, 2008 12:47 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Crawford - ss - UCLA

He kinda fell on his face as a junior, not sure why? He had much better stats as a Freshman and Sophomore. Seems a little strange, but might be a consideration later.

by batonball on May 19, 2008 6:30 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Derrick Gibson - SS - HS Delaware

HS Delaware player of the year.

Going to NC.

Looks like a decent talent. Would consider him later.

by batonball on May 19, 2008 6:54 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Ike Davis or Brett Wallace

I find it difficult to determine who’s going to be better. Wallace looks like a Billy Ball dream player! Ike might have more power? It will be tough to choose between them, and both project at 1B, although Ike could also play in the OF.

by batonball on May 17, 2008 9:21 PM EDT   0 recs

Sounds good

If youhave two strong picks for that position, it would be awesome. It also fills needs in the system.

by demondeaconsbaseball on May 17, 2008 9:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

A good problem!

Who do you like better?

by batonball on May 17, 2008 9:40 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Brett Wallace by a mile

Most people agree that Wallace is the far superior bat. Davis is solid, but Wallace could be special. I know a Yankee fan in Arizona that goes to all the ASU games and he also favors Wallace.

by Mike R. on May 19, 2008 12:55 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Wallace is #1 on our list

followed by Gillespe
Ike Davis
Gose? I agree he has alot of potential, but he may be too risky
Sonny Gray?

I’m trying to compile a list. Any help is greatly appeciated

by batonball on May 19, 2008 8:40 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Times ticking!!

We’ve had some valuable imput here, but Sickels post all but insures that out top three selections are gone.

Wallace, Davis, Gillespie, all gone…..........

so I’d take Gose or Sonny Gray (both way to high) on default.

Allan Dykstra? That could be a reach. Galloway if he’s still around. Lobstein if he drops?

We need some more names or it will be picking by myself. lol

by batonball on May 19, 2008 6:37 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Reese Havens

He’s on my list. Not that I want a SS that will have to be a 3B, we have ARod, and will this kid have enough power to be a MLB player there?

But he is a very good hitter, so I’d consider him. Then leave it to the minor league brains to figure where he’ll play.

by batonball on May 19, 2008 6:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Some names

Dykstra is a reach. David Cooper is probably better than him. Some bats you can consider Dennis Raben Miami OF, Brett Lawrie Canada HS SS/C, Zach Collier Chino Hills HS OF.

by Mike R. on May 19, 2008 10:49 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Isaac Galloway

His stock in sliding in some corners. He is one of the most polished HS hitters. Projects to be a very good MLB player. I just didn’t consider him at 28, because I didn’t think he’d be there.

He’d take more time to develop. And they say he doesn’t have a high ceiling. I’m sure how they determine this ceiling crap.

It will be interesting to see where he goes.

by batonball on May 17, 2008 9:32 PM EDT   0 recs

Ryne White

Slugging Purdue 1B. Great college hitter. No mention of him on any mock drafts. Would make a great 4th or 5th round selection.

by batonball on May 17, 2008 10:04 PM EDT   0 recs

David Adams-2B-Virginia

Another Cape Cod vet, who showed he could hit with wood. Worth consideration with a 3rd or 4th.

Ryne should also be in that range, I doubt he’d last to the fifth.

by batonball on May 18, 2008 1:40 PM EDT   0 recs

William and Mary

Three players of interest on this college team

C – Tim Park
OF – Mike Sheridan

by batonball on May 18, 2008 1:55 PM EDT   0 recs

Any 4th and 5th round thoughts?

Trying to cover all the bases here. I need some names for the later portion of the draft. Usually it’s better to invest in college players here, as you’ll HS kids might and often do opt for college.

Names?

by batonball on May 18, 2008 4:49 PM EDT   0 recs

Washington OF Andy Lentz

.368 20 HR 65 RBI’s as a senior

3rd round and beyond

3rd round – Lonnie Chisenhall 3B Pitt JC or Tim Murphy LHP UCLA
4th round – Austin Dicharry RHP, Klein Collins HS
5th Round – Wade Miley LHP, Southeastern Louisiana

Thanks Mike R.

I appreciate your contributions.

by batonball on May 20, 2008 9:57 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No problem

I enjoy it. A couple other names to keep in the back of your head for the later rounds could be:

Scott Green RHP University of Kentucky – He got drafted by the red sox last year and declined a $1M + bonus to build his draft stock and got buried in the Kentucky bullpen, but he’s got tools. 6’8” with a FB in the low 90’s.

Keith Landers LHP – St. Peter-Marian HS (Mass) Another tall (6’7”) kid that throws high 80’s topping out at 92 but has some projection to him. He could add a couple of ticks when he fills out. He is quite raw, but has potential.

Duke 1B Nate Freiman

Above average Hitter, Above average Power an average defense. He put up pretty good numbers at the Cape last summer. .286/.374/.365

he’d be a good fit at power forward too!

6'8"

Can a guy this big hit MLB pitching? Frank Howard did at 6’7”, but I think he might be the tallest hitter EVER.

Was there anyone else?

Why not the kid from Shawnee?

Earlier this year I believe it was a pitcher from Shawnee High School (New Jersey) that could be around when the Yankees have their pick. Wouldn’t it make some sense to draft him, as he is good and local? Or has he rocketed up the board, or fallen? Please excuse my lack of knowledge on the later picks in the 1st round. After all, the Nats have been picking in the top 15 since they have been in D.C

The Yankees tend not to draft local kids

If I was running the show, I’d make darn sure Fernando Frias and Jean Carlos Rodriguez of George Washington HS (NYC) ended up in my system. Both are very good ball players, but would be later round selections. 10 round and beyond territory – just a guess. But I would never use a hometown as a grading tool

I do think having a little local flavor is in the best interest of a ball club, however, it just has to happen by concidence.

A good example is Manny Del Carmen – from Boston, drafted by Boston, darn good arm. It wouldn’t have mattered though if he was from Hong Kong though. It was all about the arm.
