MiLB Mock Draft Pick 19: Chicago (NL)
Aaron Hicks gets drafted by the Mets in the mock. The Mets to me have been a team that has drafted college pitchers/toolsy outfielders, and signed a lot of ceiling guys internationally. I think that they get a hybrid a really toolsy, ceiling guy. I voted differently, but once again I wouldn't scream too much over this selection.
Now we have the Cubbies they've made headlines with Vitters and Samarjia(?) over the last couple of years. I really don't know where Hendry is at now. As BA put it in this years handbook it seems as if the Cubs pipeline of ridiculous pitching prospects has seemed to run dry. Gallagher and Veal are far from sure things. I wouldn't be surprised if they went the pitching route.
Did anyone else see Alan Simpson's mock top 10 on PG Crosschecker? There is a lot of buzz that the guy we have going #13 being Tampa's target at #1. Buster Posey is a skyrocketing

Collier...
specifically has gotten a lot of buzz lately after not being a extraordinarily regarded prospect heading into the season. A lot of folks see him slipping into the 1st round. Austin is another guy that I added to see if there was any buzz, but he definitely is a guy who is on the upswing
Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Guess?
With the number of raw arms we have at the lower levels, I think they might go for a collegian. that said, I’m not particularly enthused about any of the available options up on the board and am a bit lazy to think right now. If we go college, I think we might look for a CF type, although pitching would probably be the favorite. If it’s high school, then it’s wide open.
Btw, outside of one inning, Gallagher has been nasty. He’s been going with that sinking mid-90’s fastball to pair with a top curve, and his slider. It’s a good combination. Yes, all prospects are risks, but he seems like a fairly safe bet at least to be a solid major leaguer, and perhaps to reach the 2/3 ceiling that many suspect he has. As for the rest of our pitching? Veal’s control is still bad, Shark has some of the oddest stuff to production numbers I’ve seen, Atkins has actually been better than expected but he’s still fringy, Russell got a quick bump, which surprised me, Ceda has actually had a couple solid outings as a starter, same for Maestri, and Rhee was outstanding before he got hurt.
A lot of Cubs fans started this season with a bit more optimism on the system, but we’ve hit some bricks along the drive. Still a lot of time, and some interesting pieces at XST that should be moving up soon.

This is where it gets tough
Zach Putnam might be one name to give a try next poll. I think I saw somewhere that his stock was up a bit, so he probably does go around here in the actual draft.
James Darnell is a guy that interests me some. He was better last season than teamates Smoak and Havens, though not as good so far this year. Still, the power is there.
Tyler Chatwood is another interesting name. This might be early, but apparently some like him at catcher, which could make him a good pick in this range given position scarcity.
And I’m wondering how far Harold Martinez’s stock has fallen? I think he’d probably get some votes here just from previous hype, but I’m not sure if he deserves them yet, or if he’s fallen out of round 1.

After a bit of research....
All of those guys I mentioned look like a bit of a reach here.
After watching a lot of the videos at milb.com, and getting more up to speed…..
I like Tyson Ross here. I also like Lobstein enough I might start voting for him, though he probably hasn’t gotten enough votes to stay on the ballot yet.
It seems that the strength of the draft is college hitting, but we still may be overemphasizing that group a bit in this poll, maybe because there’s more good info on them. HS players, and pitchers, are a bit harder to project.
