Crow v. Matusz
Posted in my blog I compared Crow and Matusz
Essentailly I said this: Crow's two best pitches are better than Matusz's best two. However, Matusz has a better delivery, a better 3rd pitch, and is LHP. Furthermore, he will be much cheaper than Crow from the sound of things.
Question is this: who will be the first pitcher taken? Not who is BETTER, but who will be the first taken.

Crow
If Crow is not with Boras, then I don't think his demands will be that crazy. Plus, it seems like the only thing Matusz has on Crow is that he's a southpaw. Crow has the more electric stuff and the higher upside.

clarification please.
what exactly are you meaning by "higher upside"? is that like carlos gomez' upside? you may or may not be aware that there are differing perceptions of upside on this board. please explain.
thanks!
I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

all kidding aside
what are their respective repertoire's? i don't read much on college players as keeping up w/ all the minor leaguers is time consuming enough. i guess this would be more of a question for the original poster but would of course welcome any info.
thanks!

Crow vs. Matusz
Crow http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/events/draft_report/y2008/index.jsp?mc=crow
Fastball: Crow fired his fastball up to 96 mph.
Fastball movement: He showed some life in the strike zone.
Slider: He threw a hard power slider that clocked in up to 87 mph.
Changeup: Crow showed a good feel for a changeup.
Control: He had good command and was generally around the plate. His fastball command was better as he was inconsistent in spotting his secondary pitches
Poise: Crow is very poised and agressive, going right after hitters.
Physical Description: Crow has a loose and athletic frame and fits the mold of a projectable right-hander.
Medical Update: Healthy.
Strengths: Electric stuff, flashing three plus pitches and the ability to maintain velocity deep into starts.
Weaknesses: He's got a slight flaw in his delivery, where his wrist flops or wraps in back. He usually comes out of it, but it makes it a little harder for him to pitch to the extension side.
Summary: After a strong Cape season, he was high atop Draft lists heading into the season. He's done nothing to hurt his status, showing three plus pitches to dominate hitters and establish himself as one of the top college arms, if not the top college arm, in the Draft class.
Matusz isn't up but he is supposed to have 3 plus pitches as well and a little cleaner but I don't want to search for the info.

That is...
*3 potential plus pitches
Again, I don't know off the top of my head but I'm sure someone could run a search and give us a rundown. I heard some people say they liked Matusz almost as much as Price last year. /me shrugs

Sure
By upside, I mean that Crow has the better chance of developing into a dominating, top of the rotation ace starter. I don't see that type of stuff from Matusz.

RE
yeah Matusz being LHP is an obvious plus. Plus his deliveriy is effortless.

RE
completley agreed.
Crow has flat out dominating stuff. His FB/Slider combo is Prio-esue.
Video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Jd5WfDZAxso
Matusz has 3 very solid pitches but has sat 90-91 with his FB.
Matusz seems to me like a solid innings eater and a durable pitcher - a 2 or 3 on a good team. Crow could be elite.

I think they're good
but he has a weird wrist flip before unloading that some are already worried about. Personally I think it's much ado about nothing, but we'll see.
There is a very informative piece from sabre scouting (I think that's the name) that breaks down his delivery.

Thanks
Looks a bit whacky. It would be interesting to go back and see if there's any way to compare that motion. Course, I tend to agree with deezle- it's not like he's raising his elbow a lot or anything.

Not good.
As jfish pointed out in his link, I disagree with Saber-Scouting, as does Chris O'Leary.
