Minor League Report 4/5!
Hello everyone,
Indians (MLB) - lost to the Oakland Athletics 6-1.
Cabrera and Garko each have 2 hits, but the offense as a whole is not generating much. Outside of a Hafner RBI 2B to score Cabrera in the 1st, they did not produce much. Peralta was 0-4, while the bottom part of the order (Gutierrez, Blake, and Shoppach) went a combined 0-11 with 3 Ks. Jason Michaels, batting in the 3rd spot today, drew the only walk, versus 10 Ks as a team for the Indians' offense.
Meanwhile, pitching-wise, Sabathia with another poor outing, and another poor outing in Oakland, as he's now a career 1-4 with a 7.12 ERA (lone win coming in July 2003): 5.1 IP/6 H/4 R/4 ER/4 BB/2 K/1 HR (solo to Ellis,) 1 HB (Sweeney); 61 S/46 B; 6 G/8 F (7.59 - in my opinion, the big question is, will the pressure of not resigning with the Indians and being up for FA affect him the whole year as he tries to "work" for a large contract?)
RHP Rafael Betancourt didn't pitch well today either, giving up 4 H and 2 runs (both earned) in 0.1 IP. Conversely, Lewis went 0.2 scoreless and hitless IP and Kobayashi had a scoreless inning, though he gave up 2 hits.
Conversely, LHP Dana Eveland was stellar for the A's in his Oakland debut: 7.0 IP/6 H/1R/1 ER/1 BB/7 K; 62 S/39 B; 5 G/9 F (1.29 - put up a line one would expect from Sabathia.)
Indians vs. A's at 4:05 P.M. EDT - LHP Cliff Lee vs. RHP Joe Blanton.
AAA Buffalo - their game with Norfolk (BAL) postponed due to rain - no makeup date announced.
AA Akron - lost the suspended game from Thursday against Harrisburg (WAS) 8-5 in 10 innings - 1B Luis Jimenez hit a game-winning 3-run HR off RHP Timothy Burton.
The regularly scheduled game - lost to Harrisburg (WAS) 8-5 (again!) - 50 degrees, partly cloudy - 5 MPH wind out to LF:
SS Josh Rodriguez - 1-4, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 E (1-throw) (.125)
DH Michael Aubrey - 2-4, 1 R, 1 BB (.333)
3B Wes Hodges - 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI (.333 - 2-run shot the opposite way to right-center field.)
RF Ryan Goleski - 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K (.333 - back-to-back with Hodges.)
C Chris Gimenez - 1-2, 1 2B, 1 K (.286 - his 2B followed the back-to-back shots of Hodges and Goleski in the 3rd.)
2B Brandon Chaves - 1-2, 2 BB, 1 CS (1-2B) (.200)
LHP David Huff - 4.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HR (2-run); 4 G/7 F (6.75 - a bit of a rough outing for his first AA start.)
RHP J.D. Martin - L (0-1) - 2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR (2-run,) 1 PO (2B); 2 G (9.00 - one mistake, but otherwise, not bad for his first healthy outing in a while, especially the K/IP rate.)
RHP Sung-Wei Tseng - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HR (2-run); 3 G/2 F (9.00 - also struggled with the long ball in his AA debut.)
Harrisburg:
RHP Shairon Martis - 4.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 2 HR (2-run to Hodges & solo to Goleski,) 1 WP; 5 G/5 F (9.00)
RHP Jim Ed Warden - S (1) - 1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 K; 1 G/1 F (6.75 - 1s are wild for the former Indians' reliever, who nailed down the save today after blowing the one on Thursday.)
High-A Kinston - both the suspended game from Friday, April 4 and the regularly scheduled game on Saturday against Winston-Salem (CHW) have been rained out. No makeup dates announced.
Low-A Lake County - lost to Lakewood (PHI) 7-6; 58 degrees, partly cloudy - wind in from RF at 12 MPH.
LF Lucas Montero - 1-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 CS (1-2B) (.462)
3B Jeff Hehr - 2-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K (.417)
DH Chris Nash - 1-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 BB, 2 K (.308)
RF Matt Brown - 2-4, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 1 BB (.364 - also threw out a runner at 3B.)
1B Dustin Realini - 1-4, 1 BB, 1 K (.250)
CF Adam White - 1-4, 1 R, 2 K (.333)
RHP Christopher Archer - 5.0 IP, 0 H, 2 BB, 4 K; 7 G/4 F (0.00 - very impressive 2008 debut for the 19-YO, 5th-Rd. 2006 pick out of Clayton HS, NC. Had great stuff when he was drafted, but has had issues with command; today was a solid outing toward harnessing that stuff.)
RHP Garrison Campfield - (BS-1), 1.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 1 HB; 1 F (36.00 - UGH!)
RHP Jonathan Holt - (BS-1, L 0-1), 0.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 HR (3-run); 2 F (40.50 - another UGH outing!)
RHP Kyle Landis - 1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 K; 2 F; 0/2 IR scored (0.00 - only solid outing out of the bullpen today.)
Take care and have a great day!

Maybin keeps on hitting, 2 for 3 w/ a walk, triple, and yes HR #2. Only thing not great about him so far is that he was CS tonight.

couple impressive cardinals pitching performances
Clayton Mortensen went 5 innings, 3 hits, 0 runs, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts in his AA debut.
David Kopp went 4 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts and had 8 groundouts and 0 flyouts. his sinker is pretty darn good.

It's not you.
I've thought the same thing. You would think there would be a lot more traffic with it being opening week.

Unfortunately...
I think John made a mistake by changing the interface of this site. Although I don't mind the 'new look', I think we can all agree that the traffic, comments, posts, etc have been significantly lower since the change.
Should I assume that going back to the 'old system' is not an option?

re
I don't mind the new look - it has some advantages over the old one. But hardly anyone else likes it and most hate it. People won't bother with a website that has a layout they can't tolerate.

People hate change...
doesn't really surprise me. I thought the old site looked incredibly out of date and had very few functions. Personally think John did a the right thing by trying to upgrade and improve his product but unfortunately his community doesn't seem to think so. You would have thought this would have went over better with all the crap John took for not being able to stop all the multi-accounts but I guess they just wanted to complain instead of have John actually do something about it.

I'm 100% cool with change
Its easy (and pretty dumb) to just say dismiss the whole subject with a blanket statement that "people hate change". I'm 100% cool with change, but it has to be the right change. Please tell me one (just one) advantage this new site has over the old. As far as I can tell, unless I'm missing something, the only thing is that you can make avatars. So we basically sacrificed readability, simplicity, and what looks like 50% of the old audience just so some guy can put Cartman as his picture?
I personally thought one of the things that made his old site work was its simplicity. Easy to navigate and easy and find everything. Site simplicity is also one of the central reasons I use Google as my #1 search engine over Yahoo or any other one. Less is ALWAY more. Always.

that's really silly
it's just as readable, just as simple, and a bit more clean/modern looking.
not much different, i'd say a bit better and have no problem with someone saying it's a bit worse. but the idea that it's much different is, frankly, silly.

I kind of agree
I like the new Z feature instead of pressing control F and typing [new] everytime.
I also think it is just as readable, the only feature I don't like is the lack of 50 diaries on the front page. But again, the recommendations should keep the great diaries at the top and once people pick up on that we'll have a lot more good diaries sticking around.
I honestly think it was a good change.

What is so difficult about the new site? You had to fill out a form to get your old posts? You had to reset your settings?
I don't care about Avatars but the site looks much more modern, it seems to have quicker load times, the fanshots could be a very nice addition to the forums and it's only been a month or two so give it a shot. There is absolutely nothing about the new format that makes coming to this site more difficult.
If less is always better, would you take less pay, insurance...how about less runs? Can't win a ball game with zero runs. I could go on and on. If you want technology to pass you up, this site would be lucky just to stay as a blimp on the internet community as a whole. If you don't change, adapt, evolve you get weeded out but everyone wants to maintain the status quo. Isn't that one of the biggest gripes sabermetricians had against traditional baseball? It was a good move and needed to be done. Everyone who is being stubborn because of the change just give it a shot you would see it has all of the same features the old site had and more.

Are you serious?
What a horrible analogy. We’re clearly talking "less vs more" in terms of site layout, and then you start making paycheck analogies that a 3rd grader or retarded 30 year old would make.
"There is absolutely nothing about the new format that makes coming to this site more difficult." This is untrue. It takes about twice the amount of time to read the same content as the old site. This isn’t "hard" per se, but it is annoying. There isn’t one millimeter of the screen that isn’t covered in something. Its just overkill. I’m sure that Google can choose to plaster their website with content if they wanted to, but they choose simplicity (just a search bar and a lot of white).
Listen, I’m a fan of this site and will continue reading regardless (I love Johns work). I would love to focus back on actual baseball instead of the site layout. John made the change and we’ll have to live with it. So be it. The only reason I’m typing this is to respond to those people who feel the need to attack people who don’t like the change. I just feel the old site wasn’t "broken" and thusly didn’t need the "fix". This is like new Coke.

Layout
I'm not sure that it was actually up to John whether the layout was changed. This site is part of SBNation, and this is the new version of their work. They're changing all of their sites over to this eventually, with I think baseball being first to get done. I could be wrong, but I assume that every SBNation site would run this format eventually.

I was just about to start a diary asking about that...
The diary traffic seemed to grind to a halt, and I'm not sure why. The change disrupted things for me, and I had to lose my user name, not a big deal tho. I don't like the new layout or interface, it just takes longer to load the page, then the page is overloaded with stuff, which crowds out the main story window.
In short, I prefer more minimal websites, but I'm not sure why people have bailed, but they seem to have. I normally expect more brisk posting traffic as the season just started, and the minors just started with some impressive performances (McGee and Wieters especially).
So I don't know what happened, unless casual people just didn't want to sign up or just left if they lost their user name

agree 100%
The change-over has certainly made coming to the site less pleasant, and I'm noticing a major drop in activity as well. You're not wrong.

Some fixes
You could change the number of diaries on the main page. And you can also change the width of the page so that it takes up more of your monitor (under the Minor League Ball logo).

First 3 games
Everth Cabrera has 7 walks and only 6 ABs. Granted he is 21 and playing A ball, but particularly for a Rockie 2b, he could be interesting

Hello jfish26101,
Thanks for the question - greatly appreciated! :-)
My guess is is that Jenkins will return to SS-A Mahoning Valley to begin 2008 - he only hit .230/.279/.365 in 178 ABs there in 2007. I know the Indians will send some of their recent college draftees (Jenkins was drafted in the 2007 MLB Draft,) back to Mahoning Valley if they had difficulty in their first exposure there. If Jenkins does well there this season, he could move up to Low-A Lake County before the end of the season so that he gets some Low-A experience in 2008.
Hopefully, this is helpful. :-)
Take care and have a great day!

Jenkins wasn't drafted though, he just signed. FA I guess...holds a few records for WVU but I think we talked about that last year. Just noticed he wasn't listed but White was. Thanks again.
