Daily Minor League Thread 04/03 & 04/04
So, we did this last year and I figured we might want to do it again this year. Some of yesterday's story lines: Matt Laporta hit a grand slam homerun in his AA debut; Rick Porcello suggested he wont be overmatched in Hi-A with 5 scoreless innings; FDLS had a decent start to the season - giving up 2ER in 6IP with 6K; and my favorite breakout prospect Gerardo Parra had a HR last night as well. So, what did you notice yesterday? / who are you watching tonight?

technically not minors....
but Towles just hit his first HR.... and Carlos Villanueva was dealing through 4 IP, with 6 K's... [though he is facing the giants]

From yesterday

Whoops
I really wish there was a delete/edit key. Didn't notice there was already a thread for yesterday.

Minor League site for pitching probables
Is there a site you can go to that has all of the pitching probables in the minors?
I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

Cole Rohrbough
Does anyone know where he was assigned? I can't find him on any roster.

Frederick
Arriata and Wieters are making their minor league debuts tonight.
by dkdc on Apr 4, 2008 6:54 PM EDT 0 recs
Wow
Great night for both of them.
Arrieta went 4 innings, struck out 9, walked 1, and allowed 1 run on 2 hits. All 5 of the balls put in play were grounders. His pitch count was only at 65, but I guess they were being cautious.
So far, Wieters has walked and crushed an opposite field HR from the right side.
Billy Rowell left the game with a leg injury.

Kershaw
Only went 3 innings today, 2h 1er 2bb 4k. The control still is off but otherwise fine. Anyone know why he only went 3 innings though? I've heard they may take it easy on hi to start so he would be fresh if the Dodgers need him in the 2nd half. But I was wondering if there might of been rain, etc.?
by hybrid on Apr 4, 2008 10:52 PM EDT 0 recs
Hello hybrid,
According to the game box score, it was 85 degrees and cloudy, so rain may have been possible, but it wasn't present at the start of the game.
Doing a search for "Weather Forecast for Jacksonville, Florida," it seemed there was a chance of a storm on Friday, but it's also possible Kershaw was just held to three innings his first time out, especially since he had 2 BB and 4 K - it's possible he reached a decent number of pitches by then.
Just a guess on my part and my 2 cents. :-)
Take care and have a great day!

Indians' Overview!
Hello everyone,
Indians (MLB) - facing the Athletics out in Oakland. Indians trail 1-0 after 3 innings; Paul Byrd with an unusual bout of wildness, including a passed ball (Shoppach didn't give a great effort on a back-handed catch with a runner on 3B,) 2 BB and 2 WPs. Justin Duchscherer has struck out 6 (and he's not a strikeout pitcher,) a few due to a couple of questionable calls by Tim Timmons (including one considerably inside on 3B Casey Blake that was called strike three) as it seems Timmons has a wide outside corner and high strike zone according to the Indians' radio announcers. Timmons has called 5 of the 6 strikeouts, all off that outside corner that he's calling a strike. To Duchscherer's credit, he has continuously hit that outside corner. Peralta just got the first hit off Duchscherer in the 4th, a 2-out 2B that short-hopped the LF wall.
AAA Buffalo - defeated Norfolk (BAL) 4-3; 72 degrees, cloudy.
2B Josh Barfield - 1-4, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 CS (1-3B) (.556)
LF Ben Francisco - 2-3, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K (.375)
1B Jordan Brown - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB (.556)
SS Andy Gonzalez - 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 E (1-missed catch) (.500)
CF Brad Snyder - 2-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 SF (.286)
3B Aaron Herr - 1-4, 1 BB, 2 K (.375)
RHP Sean Smith - 3.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 2 WP; 37 S/33 B; 1 G/3 F (6.00 - starts off the season with a rough outing in terms of command.)
RHP Scott Elarton - 3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 K; 22 S/14 B; 3 G/4 F (3.00)
LHP Rich Rundles - W (1-0) - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB (1 IBB,) 3 K; 15 S/16 B; 1 B/1 S (0.00)
RHP Edward Mujica - S (1) - 1.0 IP, 1 K; 5 S/0 B; 2 F (0.00)
Norfolk:
LHP Garrett Olson - 4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 BB, 4 K, 1 HB; 38 S/37 B; 6 G/2 F (2.25 - his command was not sharp either, nearly throwing 1/1 B/S and walking 6.)
AA Akron - their game with Harrisburg (WAS) postponed due to rain - no makeup date announced. Thursday's suspended game will be resumed on Saturday, April 5 at 5:05 P.M.
High-A Kinston - their game with winston-Salem (CHW) suspended in the 3rd inning due to a power outage; Kinston leads 3-0; 70 degrees - clear.
RF John Drennen - 1-2 (.500)
1B Beau Mills - 1-2 (.500)
3B Jared Goedert - 1-2 (.500)
LF Nick Weglarz - 1-1, 1 R (1.000)
SS Carlos Rivero - 1-1, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI (1.000)
CF Cirilo Cumberbatch - 1-1, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI (1.000)
C Alex Castillo - 1-1, 1 2B, 1 RBI (1.000 - also threw out a runner at 2B.)
RHP Steven Wright - 3.0 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 K; 4 G/2 F (0.00 - ironic that the power outage occurred during his start; last season, there were at least 2-3 of his outings that were shortened due to rain.)
Low-A Lake County - defeated Lakewood (PHI) 6-4; 54 degrees, overcast.
2B Karexon Sanchez - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB (2-2B,) 1 CS (2-2B)
DH Roman Pena - 1-3, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 BB, 1 K (.143)
1B Chris Nash - 1-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 3 K (.333)
LF Lucas Montero - 2-4, 1 R, 1 K (.625)
CF Adam White - 2-4, 1 R, 2 K (.375)
LHP Ryan Morris - 5.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 1 HR (solo,) 2 E (2-pickoff, throw); 10 G/6 F (4.76)
RHP Josh Judy (W - 1-0) - 2.1 IP, 3 K; 2 G/2 F (0.00)
RHP Vinnie Pestano (S - 1) - 1.0 IP, 2 K; 1 F (0.00)

Hello again everyone,
Indians (MLB) - lost to Oakland in 8.5 innings 6-3; Hafner (off Huston Street) and Garko (off Keith Foulke) both hitting solo shots, but poor defense and a DP groundball by Peralta with the bases loaded and a chance for the Indians to get back into it really sabotaged the Indians' chances of winning this ballgame.
Indians and A's at 4:05 P.M. EDT on Saturday afternoon - LHP C.C. Sabathia vs. LHP Dana Eveland. C Victor Martinez MIGHT return to the lineup.
Take care and have a great day!

Not sure if anyone noticed...
... But there was a Jeff Allison sighting on Friday for the High A Jupiter squad.
3.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 4 K
Allison is still only 23, and I suppose still has a realistic shot if he can move quickly and stay clean.
