Carlos Rosa - KC

Anyone have any thoughts on this 23 year old KC farmhand? He's not a top-top prospect, but was pretty much a consensus top 10 guy in KC's organization entering 2008. He's back in AA this year and it's hard to argue with what he's done: 34 IP, 21 H (1 HR), 5 ER, 5 BB, 32 K, 1.32 ERA. His latest outing today came today against Sprinfield: 6-4-0-0-7.

He struggled when initally promoted to AA during last season, but adjusted well as time went on and is keeping up the pace this year. As his milb.com profile notes, "Struggled for Wichita early but posted a 3-1 record with a 2.87 ERA in 10 starts following the Texas League All-Star break, including a 0.83 ERA in four starts in August." (Rosa is now with NW Arkansas, as KC moved its AA affliate from Wichita.)

Kevin Goldstein on Rosa's stuff at BP this week: : "Rosa’s fastball has slightly above-average velocity and movement, and he flashes a plus slider and solid changeup as well, giving him a solid three-pitch mix."

In their 2008 book, Baseball America cited a 93-95 FB that can touch 97. BA also noted that Rosa has two "effective" breaking pitches in a curve and a change.

At the least, Rosa seems to be a guy worth watching. Has anyone here seen him or have insight as to his upside?

And my blurb:

Carlos Rosa (#5) – Let’s start this one off with a quote, shall we? "It’s stupid to ever say, ‘This guy can’t miss because too many good looking prospects miss.’ But I’m telling you, this kid is a stud. No reason he can’t be an ace.’" I would take that, wouldn’t you? Rosa throws in the low 90’s and has touched 97 as recently as last year, and has a strong, if somewhat erratic slider. His changeup is a good pitch too. Bob McClure loves him, and that’s a good thing for sure.

BA says he has a strong curve but should scrap his slider. I’ve seen differing reports on that, some saying he has a very good slider.

Hilarious Greinke quote in the 2nd article
  • Gotta love Zack Greinke. Guy was, by most accounts, the best golfer on the Royals but told me Wednesday he’s given up the sport, "because there’s no point to it, I’m not going pro." That’s now officially my excuse when people ask to golf. "Nope, don’t do it, I’m not going pro."

haha

No kidding. He said the same thing a year ago I believe.

Awesome.

But let’s face it, that’s one of MANY awesome Zack quotes.

Rosa

They seemed quick to bump him to AA last year after he had a big run in the Carolina League. I wonder how quick they’ll be to get him up to AAA.

I would be surprised

If he was in AA too much longer. Not that I have any inside info, but I don’t see what more he has to prove at this point. Here’s a spectator’s description from today—

“Carlos Rosa looked good again today for the Naturals against Springfield. I don’t have the official stats. He lasted 6 innings and gave up no runs, stuck out several. I think he gave up 4 hits. The Springfield hitters looked overmatched. On springfield’s generous radar gun, he hit 96-97 several times. Off speed stuff didn’t look too bad either. This coming after his last outing where he lasted 8 innings and gave up 1 hit. Mcfall hit 2 home runs, one a granny. I need to get to know the Natties position players, don’t know much about them. Hope this guy will eventually pan out for us!”

Game

I was at the game too and he did look pretty good. The stadium gun even had him at 99 once. The conditions really favored hitters yesterday, as you can see from the 8 HRs hit by some very unremarkable players, so he did a nice job of keeping the ball in the park. I believe he was mixing in a good change and curve but no sure about a slider.

Royals released Mike Maroth today so the speculation

is that Rosa will be promoted to Omaha. He has over 100 IPs at AA from 2007-2008 so he is ready for AAA. He started at NWA due to Royals AAA starting staff.

Rosa is another one of KC’s pitching prospects who could contribute at big league level within next 2 years.
