MiLB Draft Pick 18: New York (NL)
Brett Wallace goes to Toronto, which makes some sense I guess. Just not as much in my opinion as Hicks or Fields. Hicks to me is a great value here, but for some reason I think that Fields would be very tempting to Minaya. However, the Mets went college reliever last year so you never know. The system needs a shot of talent. Who will it be?
1. Tampa Bay - Aaron Crow-RHP-Mizzou

4. Baltimore - Brian Matusz-LHP-San Diego

6. Florida - Yonder Alonso-1B-Miami (FL)
7. Cincinnati - Gordon Beckham-SS-Georgia
8. Chicago (AL) - Tim Melville-RHP-HS Missouri
9. Washington - Kyle Skipworth-C-HS California
10. Houston - Tanner Scheppers-RHP-Fresno St
11. Texas - Eric Hosmer-1B-HS Florida
12. Oakland- Jemile Weeks- 2B-Miami (FL)

Mets
Omar Minaya has indicated a desire to go over slot to get quality prospects. With a high number of early picks, the Mets can go best player available and, in my opinion, that is Martin

Agree
Obviously, their greatest need isn’t 3B. But they do need a bat. I don’t see how they could pass up Martin here.
The next best alternatives here are HS pitchers, and I doubt they’d go that route. I wouldn’t mind Meyer or Gray. But, they also pick again in 4 more picks, so there will be pitching available there as well.

if the Mets took Martin
I have to believe it’d be as a pitcher. The Mets haven’t taken a high school bat in the first 3 rounds since Lastings Milledge.

I disagree
Best player available at this spot.
The last two drafts have been deeper with pitching. And, after developing Reyes and Wright, and with Milledge, Martinez, and Gomez on the way, pitching was a greater need. That’s no longer the case. Also, they only really had two actual first round picks since Milledge.
I don’t think most of that applies this year. I also don’t think they target a certain type of player in international scouting and a different type in the draft. I think people are reading too much into a couple of recent picks. By the second round, the talent has fallen off, and it can be good value grabbing a reliever, as they’ve done. But they can get a legit 1st round talent at this point in the draft. I wouldn’t be surprised at all at Hicks here, either.

College Starters.....
Humber
Pelfrey
They have gone that route in the past. Big guys with big arms. That’s why I went the weird route and picked Lance Lynn
Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Mets needs
If the Mets draft at all from need, it’s gotta be either an impact power bat potential (preferably one that can play either of the right side infield spots) or a starter. They’ve got enough power/project relievers to fill two farm systems and they’re pretty much set for slappy, no power guys.

Fields
I would be VERY surprised and disappointed if the Mets took Fields in this situation (as a Mets fan). The Mets actually have a very strong system (for relievers).
I voted for Meyer because I think he is the best talent left in this spot. Lynn would be fine with me as well, and I would take him because I would rather have a college pitcher, but I like Meyer A LOT. I really don’t see the Mets taking a toolsy outfielder like Hicks because Omar gets all the toolsy guys from Latin America.
In the real draft I’m hoping for one of Hunt, Cole, or Friedrich to fall to the Mets.

Fields would be really funny
Considering he was drafted by the Braves last year and wasn’t signed, and this is the compensation pick the Mets have from the Braves from losing Glavine this off-season.

raben
if dennis raben was what he was supposed to be he would be the perfect pick.

Mets pick
They wont go Fields here. Eddie Kunz has absolutely demolished at AA, and he is in line to replace Wagner. They take the BEST prospect….then that is Ethan Martin.

Demolished?
A 5.06 ERA and 11 hits in 10.2 innings with an 8:6 K/BB ratio is demolishing AA?
BTW, I still do not agree with picking Fields here.

Voting
The way the voting is going for this one(and others, but mainly this one) is totally wrong.
There is no way the Mets take Hicks in this spot. Since Omar Minaya became GM, the Mets have not drafted toolsy hitters with top picks. The Mets get the toolsy players in Latin America.
There is also no way the Mets take Fields here. The Mets have a lot of relief prospects in their system. It is the only very strong part in the system.
There is no way the Mets draft either of the two guys who are leading the voting.

Re: kunz and Supermets
I was trying to say GETTING demolished, my bad. So the stats you posted just confirmed my point. They used their top pick last year on a closer from college, who is next in line after Wagern,a nd the kid is getting scorched. Its impossible theyd go BACK to a relief pitcher here.
Supermets, i completely agree on the draft. The Rays arent taking Aaron Crow at 1, The dodgers do NOT take a HS pitcher represented by SCOTT BORAS lol, and i dont agree with half the picks in between but what are you gonna do?
I cant believe Ethan Martin is being voted upon lower than Cole, and Alex Meyer as prep pitchers. just nuts to me.

I have only 2 "no effing way" mistakes on this board
There are a lot of other things that I would switch. I would have had Fields in Milwaukee, Hicks in Minnesota, and Skipworth going to Florida. The placement on those weren’t horrendous though.

For what it's worth.....
If this was my mock I would have had Cole falling to the Mets here.
