Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Jake McGee

Over at Baseball Digest Daily, Eric SanInocencio does an outstanding job of analyzing Jake McGee and his projected future with the Rays.

Here's a snipit:

Final Analysis: Jake McGee is legit. While I’m not sure how the arms race will shake out in the Tampa Bay organization, you have to feel that the lefty will be a BIG part of the Rays future. He has a possible future as a Scott Kazmir type, or can even become a Billy Wagner in the pen if needed.

Tonight’s numbers don’t spell dominance, but in reality he ran out of gas in the sixth. Until that point, the only solid contact made off of McGee was the homerun shown earlier. This is a special arm that you will see in Tampa Bay before you know it.

How outstanding are the Rays going to be when they have a #5 starter of Matt Garza in a few years?  Crazy!

Rays 2010 Rotation

My guess would be:

1. Kazmir
2. Price
3. Davis
4. Shields
5. Garza
6. Niemann

Closer: McGee

One of those starters will probably be dealt. I could also see Niemann becoming an RP down the road but with his size and ability I see them giving him every chance to make an impact as a starter.

davis

it’s a bit early to say Davis will be a #3 starter ahead of Shields. Frankly Davis isn’t off to a scintillating start and I’d certainly take Shields’ future over his.

You are also ignoring Hellickson...

He is tearing up High A and projects as at least a 2-3 starter. He is only one year further away than McGee and Davis.

No Chance

Hellickson is 8th at best on the Tampa SP depth chart. If they go with Crow in the 1st round he is even lower. Hellickson is a decent starter but considering he is only in High A and behind so many other starters he has little chance to crack the 2010 starting rotation. At best he may crack the lineup in a relief role. BA doesn’t even have him listed in the 2011 roster, let alone starting rotation.

Hellickson will likely spend this season between High A and AA before making the jump from AA to AAA midpoint of the 2010 season.

You need to work on your math...

He is in High A this year…2008. So if he ends this year in AA as your post and more importantly his performance suggests, then he will start there in 2009. Thus by your logic he will be in AA for part of 2008, all of 2009 and part of 2010? He may get dealt, but he is a legitimate big time prospect. One that John is higher on this year than he was on Davis last year. (at the same level).

Also, with injuries and trades, I would say there is a very good chance that 8 or 9 starting pitchers turns into 5 or 6 by 2010. Hellickson will be in that mix.

Rays Rotation

Kazmir will be dealt. You can take that to the bank, because he certainly will. As much as the Rays would like to keep him, he’ll be more valuable to them in a deal. With the arms coming up through the farm system that are cost-controlled, whereas Kaz is going to command top dollar. In fact, Beyond the Boxscore (another SB Nation blog) references a number as high as $20 million a year. While that might be high, $13-14 is not out of the question, except that the Rays are not likely to be willing to pay that kind of money, at least not until and unless a new stadium is built and a winner is put on the field.

Laughable

Aaron Crow? Let him get in affiliated ball before you start naming him the next Luke Hochevar Brandon Webb.

Jeremy Hellickson is a very good prospect.

Why wait?

Do you think Hellickson should have been ranked higher then Price last year? Price hadn’t pitched a professional inning so by your logic Hellickson should be higher on the depth chart. I never stated that Hellickson is not a very good prospect, he just is not high enough on the depth chart to make an impact in the starting rotation by 2010. Perhaps 2011 but more likely 2012.

The Rays will not draft Aaron Crow

They will either draft Pedro Alvarez or Tim Beckham. I’ve heard that at this point, Beckham is #1 on their board.
